Welcome to Semester 2! We farewell and thank longstanding Governing Council Chairperson Travis Skipworth After much consideration, Travis has decided to resign as Chairperson of the Moonta Area School Governing Council. He will also resign from the Governing Council. Travis has contributed much to our school over many years and has decided that it is time to devote his time to different activities. As Travis took up his post mid- term, 1997, he believes that this is a good time to resign as it puts less pressure on the Council. Travis has been involved with Moonta Area School since 1983, when his first child Monica was enrolled. In 1988 he became a member of the Governing Council and he was elected to Chairperson half way through 1997, a contribution of 31 years service! Travis has contributed to the school in many other ways. He has been an instrumental member of the selection panel for student representatives, leading our school. Travis has attended, officiated and supported sports days and other official ceremonies and has been instrumental in supporting our Japanese Student homestay program. The list is endless. While I have only been here a short time, I am well aware of the major contribution that Travis has made to our school and the wider community. His legacy to the school will be significant into the future. On behalf of the school community I sincerely thank Travis for his significant contribution to the school and wish him all the best with his future endeavours.

As Travis took up his post mid-term, 1997, he believes that this is a good time to resign as it puts less pressure on the Council.

Lyndon Elsworthy will leave his post of Deputy Chair to take on the role of Chairperson. Lyndon is another person who contributes much to our school and has done so for many years. I welcome him to this role.

Japanese Homestay As always, this term holds many exciting extra curricula learning opportunities. The first is the Japanese Homestay programme. We welcome a group of Japanese students who will stay with us for 2 weeks. While this experience is wonderful for the visiting students it is also extremely valuable for us as we get to know individuals whose life experience is vastly different. There will be an assembly next Monday at 9 am to acknowledge and welcome them to our school. I thank host families and staff members Stacey Golding and Janine Bennett for making this experience possible for us all.

Tournament of the Minds A new activity we are trialling this term is involvement in Tournament of the Minds. Tournament of Minds is a problem solving programme for teams of students. They are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of the following disciplines:

Applied Technology

Language Literature

Maths Engineering

Social Sciences

Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

Teams are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. They are encouraged to explore possibilities and experiment with ideas as they endeavour to produce their best possible solution. They develop a creative and original way to communicate this solution to others, working within predefined parameters such as limited materials, complex challenge criteria and the deadline of Tournament Day.

Students present the product of their ideas and their challenge solution to a panel of judges and an audience on Tournament Day later this term. They have ten minutes in which to present and must do so within a 3 metre by 3 metre performance area.

The teams must also participate in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge on Tournament Day. This challenge requires rapid interchange of ideas, the ability to think creatively and the ability to develop

group cooperation skills. I thank Richard Hall and Vince Ivens who have been practising with a group of students in Term 2 to prepare students to work on their own on their long term problem.

Behaviour Review Thank you to all parents who responded to the survey inquiring about how you feel about the processes introduced at the beginning of this year. We have now collected data from parents, students and staff. The Behaviour Review Committee will look at this data and make final recommendations to Governing Council for ratification before the end of this Term. If you were unable to answer the survey and would like us to take your views into account please call me at the school as soon as possible.

Continuous Improvement As a part of our work we are always looking for ways to ensure the education service we offer is the best it can be. To achieve this aim we will be asking for feedback twice this term.

First will be the bi-annual bullying audit. This year will be the second year of an online survey as it helps us to collate the information quickly, however, if you would prefer the paper version that will also be available from the front office. An e-mail will be sent to all families who have provided their address. Paper copies will be sent to all other families. The information you provide will inform our policies and practices so that we are doing all that we can to provide a safe, orderly and productive school environment for all students.

Secondly the Department reviews all schools annually. Towards this end, staff, students and parents are all asked a series of relevant questions that relate to the quality of education provided, support given, relationships and leadership within the school setting. Again this survey is available in electronic and paper forms. This survey gives us much broader information about what we are doing well and areas for improvement. I hope that many of you will take the time to complete these surveys so that we can be the best we can be.

Moonta Has Talent Grand Final was held at the R-12 assembly Friday week 9. Cheyanne Ostendorf was the first finalist singing a beautiful version of “Someone Like You” by Adele. This was followed by Tye Patterson-Nettelbeck entertaining the audience with his much loved comedy act. The 3rd finalists Scarlett Hatcher and Addison Crocker rocked the audience with their style, dancing and overall cuteness when singing Classic by MKTO. Our fourth and final finalist Kayla Masters captivated us with her lovely version of Butterfly by Miley Cyrus. After much discussion our judging panel consisting of guests Mr Vince Ivens & Ms Sonya Rankine and School Captains Patrick Ellard, Chloe Barrett and Sarah Jolly made their final decision announcing Tye Patterson-Nettelbeck as the winner. The Runner Up was Kayla Masters. I would like to acknowledge all students who participated in the Moonta Has Talent Auditions. It certainly takes a lot of courage to get up in front of an audience. The judges and I loved each and every audition. We certainly have some fantastic talent at Moonta Area School. I would like to thank each of our judges for giving up many lunch times to judge Moonta Has Talent. This included Patrick Ellard, Chloe Barrett, Willis Daveson, Alex Elsworthy, Sarah Jolly and Dee Wigzell. Lastly thank you to Mr Handorf for setting up the equipment and allowing us to use his room each lunch time. Jane McCauley (Student Voice)

In Week 10 of last term the Year 12’s travelled to Renmark with Mrs Anderson and Mrs Westbrook where we stayed in cabins at the Big 4 caravan park on the river front. The facilities and the view were excellent and we had a lot of fun trying out the pedal carts, giant jumping bag, spa and water park. We also visited Banrock Station, the Renmark and Berri locks. The Almond Hut and a chocolate making factory at Waikerie were also in the agenda. We undertook a river cruise from Berri and went ten pin bowling and canoeing. After a very hectic end of term with lots of assignments due including an exam, it was great to let off a bit of steam, unwind and enjoy some fun activities while we learnt about the Riverland; before we got stuck into more assignments during the holidays. The teachers received lots of positive comments about our attitude and behaviour, especially from the owners of the caravan park and from the cruise director who really enjoyed our joining in with his singing.
