Why does it take so long? Most recent local major transport projects have slipped from their original timescale….
‘For the 18 completed projects that we examined, we found that final project costs were, on average, 61 per cent higher than the estimates made when approval was given to announce the preferred route’ Wales Audit Office 2011
…and cost more?
• Devolved majors funding from 2015/16
• New Local Transport Body - 4 UAs with LEP involvement
• Prioritise schemes and oversee progress
• Formula based on population – £44.9m
• Longer (6 year) and higher allocation through City Deal

Plans to Reality
Transport – helping people get places - Helping make places where people want to go
- Improved urban realm 5-15% Boost to economy (DfT) - Improved Personal safety and overall health
Green Growth – can we afford it?
Bath City Centre – evidence of decreased voids and increased retail turnover
Cities that promoted parking on the left Cities that consciously restricted parking on the right: Researchers’ conclusions: Giving lots of land to parking is
bad for economic growth – it ends up as unproductive space.
