My Background

My name is CJ Cavazos and I established CJ Recruiting in 1995. I grew up in Alice, Texas and went

to Alice High School where I ran track (400m), played football (WR/CB) and also lettered in

basketball. I earned a football scholarship to Blinn College in 1988, then went to Texas Tech in

1990 on a track scholarship. I also played football at Texas Tech, and graduated in 1993. After

college, I coached high school football at Hidalgo, Donna, Mission and Dallas Carter. I also

coached at Trinity Valley Community College, and was an NFL Sports Agent from 2000-2001. In

2002, I participated in the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Internship program with the Arizona

Cardinals.

I am married to Melba, and have six children who each have participated in athletics:

Jerry – First Team 5A All-State cornerback at Mission Sharyland 2009

CJ Junior – Scholarship to run Track at University of Texas at El Paso (signed 2013)

Josh – Scholarship to play Football at Texas A&M Kingsville (signed 2014)

Michael –Graduated from Edinburg Vela High School, and currently runs track at

Texas A & M-Kingsville.

Chloe – Currently runs Track at Desoto High School and has various Division 1 Track

Scholarship offers. She graduates in June 2017

Lejond – Currently is an 8th grader at Desoto and is an All-American Hurdler and a Football

Player. Graduates in 2020

Why I do this

My passion for helping high school athletes began while I was a coach at Dallas Carter High

School. While there, I worked for Bruce Chambers, who is now the Tight Ends Coach at the

University of Texas. Our football teams at Dallas Carter were legendary for the high quality of

athletes that they produced. We regularly sent players to schools like Miami, Notre Dame,

Purdue, Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, UCLA, USC, etc. We became a mandatory stop for college

coaches and recruiters from all levels and all regions of the country. Many of these coaches were

assistants that are now famous coaches today, like Urban Meyer, Kevin Sumlin, and Steve

Kragthorpe. My time spent with these coaches taught me what college coaches are looking for

in high school athletes. And I’m happy to say that I formed lasting relationships with most of the

coaches that I met. These relationships are very important to me today, and I work hard to keep

their trust in me. It is vital to what I do. They will give me honest evaluations of the athletes

that I introduce to them. I want to help kids and parents that deserve to succeed in their efforts

to play college sports and reduce the cost of getting a college education. Most parents don’t

have the necessary connections and representation to make this happen, but I do. I succeed by

helping students, parents and coaches succeed.

How I do this

The obvious objective is to make college coaches aware of your son/daughter and what his/her

athletic abilities are. Most readily available recruiting services evaluate your son/daughter during

a phone call or meeting, then build a profile that lists his/her accomplishments and showcases

his/her athletic abilities in videotape from the most recent season. But what do they do to make

coaches aware of your son/daughter? They may email coaches a database of coaches, or even

have you email coaches, with a link to his/her profile. Frankly, almost every college athletic

program publishes the email address of their coaches or recruiting coordinators on the school’s

website. So coaches already receive countless emails from prospective athletes, and it’s difficult

to make your son/daughter stand out. Videos are now usually readily available, especially for

football, so they can be posted on the Internet quite easily for coaches to review along with the

athlete’s personal information. Students and parents can easily create their own profiles.

We do things differently. We will evaluate each prospective athlete as a staff to determine if we

feel they have a realistic chance of competing at the next level. If we believe they do, then I will

meet with you and your son/daughter personally to review his/her athletic and academic

accomplishments, to listen to what the family would like to accomplish, and to form my own

opinion of where the athlete might best fit in. I will be completely honest with you about my

thoughts and will only offer to represent kids that I believe have the ability to play sports at some

collegiate level. Then I will personally speak to college coaches about your son/daughter. This is

where I am different from most recruiting agencies. Very few recruiting services actually reach

out to specific coaches about athletes like I can do. I pick up the phone, or go see them if possible.

Coaches trust me and my evaluation of athletes. They will give me honest feedback that I will

pass along to you. We need to find the right place for your son/daughter to go to school, where

they have the best odds of being offered a scholarship. Based on feedback from the coaches

themselves, we can then chart a path that has a high chance of success. This path will include

attending camps where I believe your son/daughter will receive the proper attention and

feedback. Exposure for your son/daughter is obviously important – I provide exposure directly

to coaching staffs to increase the odds in your son/daughter’s favor!

My team will review your son/daughter’s transcripts, and deliver an analysis that will help you

understand what college coaches will look for, and how your son/daughter can maximize the

number of schools that will be interested in them.

Facts, Fiction and My Opinion

In 2015, there will be 125 Division I FBS college football programs, including four programs that

join the FBS that year. Each can offer financial aid to 85 players, so 85 players each get a full ride.

In 2015, there will be 129 Division I FCS college football programs. Each can offer the equivalent

of 63 ‘full’ scholarships, but can divide them amongst 85 players.

There are currently 282 Division II college football programs. Each can offer the equivalent of up

to 36 ‘full’ scholarships, and split them amongst athletes as they see fit.

There are approximately 240 Division III college football programs. None can offer athletic

scholarships, but can give athletic scholarships to athletes. However, athletic skill cannot be a

factor in awarding academic scholarships, and the percentage of scholarships awarded to

athletes is not supposed exceed the percentage of athletes vs. non-athletes at the school.

There are 85 NAIA college football programs. Most of these schools can offer 24 ‘full’

scholarships that can be split amongst any number of athletes.

Assuming that each school only offers 1/4th of their total scholarships each year, then for 2015

there will be:

- 2,656 FBS Scholarships available

- 2,032 FCS ‘full’ scholarships available

- 2,538 DII ‘full’ scholarships available

- No DIII athletic scholarships

- 510 NAIA ‘full’ scholarships available

Recruiting services all pitch lack of exposure as the reason an athlete will not get recruited. While

exposure is important, that exposure must be at the correct level of athletic program coupled

with the correct team with the correct current position needs. You must know where your

athletic abilities give you a chance to play. And in order to optimize your chances of receiving a

scholarship, you must know not only what positions the coaches need to fill in a given year, but

what type of athlete they are looking for to fill that need. No amount of exposure will help you if

a coach doesn’t even consider athletes with your size or skill level. The reality is that while the

number of graduating high school football players is huge, and the number of available positions

in college is relatively small, the most important factor is matching the athlete’s size and skills

with the particular needs of certain colleges and universities. If you can figure out that match,

your chances of getting a scholarship go up drastically!

Parents and athletes must be realistic about their abilities and where they best fit. This doesn’t

mean that we will not expose them to upper-division schools, but parents and athletes must be

mentally prepared for honest feedback from me, and from college coaches. This information is

necessary to find the right place for the athlete, and the right athlete for the team.
