The CCW and Knights of Columbus will be reciting the rosary in church ½ hour before Masses during the month of May. Please join them in prayer for our country and the world.

Reason to Pray the Rosary The Rosary is Scriptural The prayers of the Rosary, which consist mainly of the Our Father (Matthew 6:9) and

the Hail Mary (Luke1:42, 41,48, 2:35), are pulled straight from scripture. It is a meditation on the events of the life of Christ which we find in the Bible. We know from scripture that praying & speaking God's Word is a valuable tool in our arsenal against the forces of darkness. Praying the Rosary, then, is an easy way to get started waging spiritual warfare for ourselves and on behalf of others.

Works of Mercy for the month of MayWorks of Mercy for the month of MayWorks of Mercy for the month of MayWorks of Mercy for the month of May Burying the Dead & Praying for the Living and the Dead

At the end of this month, Americans will celebrate Memorial Day, a federal holiday for honoring all who have died while serving in the Armed Forces. The observance is one in a long history of diverse cultural practices that express reverence for the dead. As Catholics, we move beyond secular remembrance. Scripture teaches us that it is “good and noble” to bury the dead, and “holy and devout” to pray for the living and the dead (2Maccabees 12). These virtuous and charitable acts are officially recognized by the Catholic Church as Works of Mercy.

Burying the Dead (Corporal Work of Mercy):

Human beings, created with body and soul, in the image and likeness of God, possess an innate dignity that elevates us above all other creatures. God Himself, through the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, embodied and sanctified human flesh. In life, we are instructed to form our bodies in holiness, as temples of the Holy Spirit, to keep ourselves “pure as He [Jesus] is pure” (1 John 3:3). In death, our mortal bodies lie in hope of Christ’s promise that on the Last Day we shall rise and be glorified in Him. “Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory.” (1 Corinthians 15: 35-44).

Our human body is holy, and thus demands reverence both in life and in death. From the earliest times, Christians

have regarded the burial of mortal remains as something of religious importance. The body is respectfully washed and reverently laid out for prayer vigil. We fold the hands of the deceased in the sign of a cross, or place a cross or rosary in them. The body is sprinkled with holy water and covered with a pall, the white cloth that reminds us of our Baptism and the reality that in life and death, we belong to the Lord. The Easter candle is lit for the deceased, signifying birth into Eternal Life; the grave is blessed before burial. Our Catholic rites and rituals surrounding death are rich in meaning. They reflect reverence for the body of the deceased, and lend comfort and consolation to those who are mourning. As Catholics, we fulfill our obligation to Bury the Dead when we participate in practices or rites surrounding a funeral or burial: ex. attending a wake, Funeral Mass or burial service; visiting a grave, or tending to burial sites and cemeteries; and by ensuring that our deceased loved one is given a Christian burial.

Praying for the Living and the Dead (Spiritual Work of Mercy):

It is difficult to speak of Praying for the Living and the Dead without speaking of the Communion of Saints: the unity of all the faithful -- souls living on earth, souls in Purgatory, and the souls in Heaven. We are connected as one body, with Christ as our Head. We pray for each other, to aid one another on the way to salvation. Those in heaven, who have no need of prayer, intercede for souls on earth and in Purgatory. The Church on earth prays for one another in this life, seeks intercession from the saints in Heaven, and prays for the souls in Purgatory. The souls in Purgatory, no longer able to pray for themselves or for others, rely on the prayers of the saints in Heaven and souls living on earth to hasten their journey toward Heaven.

In praying for the living and the dead, we can offer prayer in many forms: petition, fasting, penance, acts of charity, etc. By far, the most efficacious and perfect prayer one could offer is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Mass is the highest form of Catholic worship, and the Eucharist is the greatest source of Grace. Prayers and Mass offerings for the living and the dead date back to the earliest Church: St. Cyril (d. 386) testified to how “the Eucharistic Sacrifice of our Lord is of benefit to sinners, living and dead”. “The Holy Mass transcends time and space, uniting the faithful in heaven, on earth and in purgatory into a Holy Communion, and the Holy Eucharist Itself augments our union with Christ, wipes away venial sins, and presences us from future mortal sins” (cf. Catechism, No. 1391-1396).

God’s inexhaustible Mercy is constantly offered to us. We need only turn to Him to embrace it, and to allow Him

to embrace us. As we are encouraged to show mercy to others, the Church instructs and guides us through Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. During this month, when we honor those who have died in service to our country, let us also be mindful of our obligation to assist our departed brothers and sisters in their journey to eternal life through Christian burial and prayer offerings for both the living and the dead.

Catholic Services Appeal 2016 “How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done

for me?” Psalm 116:12

We have nearly completed our annual diocesan Catholic Service Appeal (CSA). As of mid-April, 302 or 35% of our 861 parish families have committed to give nearly 100% of our

$99,881 assessment! Thank you to those who have generously pledged to give to the CSA.

We are hoping to increase parish participation to the CSA and would be pleased to hear back from at least half of our parish. If you have not yet responded to the CSA, please prayerfully consider your ability to contribute, complete a commitment card, and return it to the parish. Cards can be found on the Ministry Cart, parish office, and in the Narthex. Your pledge can be returned to the parish office, mailed, or placed in the general collection at Mass. Pledges can also be made through our parish website (www.holyfamilycaledonia.org click “Make Online Donations”) or the diocesan website (www.dioceseofgrandrapids.org click “So Faith May Flourish”). Thank you for your support and prayers for the success of our

appeal!

Combined Pastoral Stewardship Council His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter in the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:21)

This verse in Matthew is what I hope I hear when I am standing face to face with my Lord. How do I do that? From what we have learned in our Christian lives is to follow Jesus, Trust in Him and be good Stewards with the gifts God has given to us. The combined Pastoral Stewardship Council, through prayer and discussion has come up with two goals that we believe will help us in our efforts of our newly formed combined councils. The goals for this year are; promoting Stewardship as a Way of Life and Growing Our Parish Welcoming. These two goals we feel are the epitome of Gods plan for us and we are hoping you all feel the same way. Living a Stewardship Way of Life is using the gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure - sure, but it is also taking care of these gifts from the way we live and act. Time includes spending time with God in daily prayer, spending time with your family, your neighbor, the sick and the dying, the hungry, taking time for yourself. Sharing your Talents is using them as God intended you to use them. We all have special talents, some of us are good with our hands, some are good with planning or leading, others are good at singing, others have talents in just being with others who need company. Many of us already know what gifts we have and we use them well, still others need some nudging and the best way to be nudged is to spend some quiet time with the Lord and listen for His voice. He will let you know what he needs you to do. The goal in growing our parish welcoming is to refine how we welcome our new parishioners and our existing parishioner. Interacting more faithfully with our new members, welcoming them with open arms and getting them involved with the parish will not only enhance their Christian life, but ours as well. From the couple that comes to celebrate the sacrament of marriage, to the family bringing in their baby for Baptism, or to the family we are ministering to who has just lost a loved one, to the family who is bringing their child to the table of the Lord for the first time to receive the Eucharist, to Catholic family and friends who are returning to the Church. All these people need to be welcomed and held for a bit until they understand that this church thing is not just something you do for one hour on Sunday. Bishop Robert Barron said in a recent sermon… “The Christian Faith is about a journey that will lead us to the Heavenly Jerusalem, to an eternal life! No one can take you out of the hand of Jesus, except yourself”. We need to all Hang on to that hand, so that we will hear the words as stated in the start of this article from Matthew’s scripture when we meet our Lord face to face.

Our Elect became Neophyte members of the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. There they were received into the Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Welcome to Dirk VerBerg, Bill Lewis and Kayla Kelly! Our Candidates for Full Communion with the Catholic Church were received into the Church by a Profession of Faith and the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Welcome Heidi Donohue and Eric Taylor! We also want to thank the dedicated ministry of our RCIA Team consisting of parishioners who spend countless hours forming their faith and preparing sessions for our RCIA participants: Sharon & Larry Albaugh, Jon Erwood, Jennifer Renegar, Mark & Julie Schmidke, and Dale Simmons. If you were unable to be there, please pray for them and perhaps drop a card of welcome and congratulations to the Parish Office, and we will get the cards to our Neophytes.

Congratulations to our Neophytes!

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic, or

if you would like to help with the RCIA process, please contact

Chris Shafer in the Parish Office.

Staff Update: In the past few months, our staff has been covering various duties of the pastoral care and parish life areas, and this has gone well so the following staff update seems appropriate: Chris Shafer will be our Director of Pastoral Care & Faith Formation, Jim Beauchamp will oversee the parish life activities and Barb Dombroski will add coordinating funeral liturgies to her role. As part of this shift, a part-time person will assist with adult faith formation as that area expanded greatly in the past three years.

Wanted: Adult Faith Formation Coordinator With the recent adjustments to our staffing, we are looking for a part-time coordinator of adult formation. The position will entail coordinating faith formation for adults including: speakers, adult learning/study groups, book study, parish mission, exhibits, online learning, etc., and appropriate promotion/marketing and evangelization efforts for adults to participate in these endeavors. Holy Family has solid adult formation offerings going, so we are looking for someone to continue those and build from there. An ability to understand and relate to adults ranging from recent graduates to older adults is important, solid understanding of the Catholic faith is important (and an ongoing desire to learn and grow more), the ability to work collaboratively with others is a must, and a grasp for the variety of formation delivery methods, authors/speakers, and interests of adults would be wonderful. If you know someone who would be a good fit, please pass along word to them and ask them to email their interest to Christine Shafer [email protected].
