Dear FRIENDS OF KCE,
The fall season is fast approaching, also the end of our fiscal year. Every year at this time, we look at our finances’ and analyze how we are doing by looking at the past years and projecting ahead to the next few years. We have seen significant growth in the past five years in the use of online registrations. Although convenient, it has placed a burden on the KCE finances that has been growing. The cost of using a credit card has been rising with all the safeguards, gateways, and merchant services. Fiscal year 2018/2019, it cost our organization almost $30,000. Since we are not taxed funded, our users pay the cost of all programs; our first reaction was to raise the cost of all registrations. However, part of the KCE mission statement is to bring the highest quality programs at the most affordable prices. Increasing the cost does not conform to our mission. Instead, we decided to give the user a choice to either come in (or mail-in) to register and pay the current prices or use the convenience of the computer and pay a service fee. We have added service fees based on the cost of each program set on a graduating scale and capped it at $6. This fee is waived when paid by cash or check at the KCE office. The service fees are set up per individual class, therefore if you want to register online for multiple classes at once, call the office to waive any charges over the $6 cap. The upside to this is we will get more face time with our customers! I love seeing you and especially your children when you visit us here at KCE!
We are looking forward to a great Fall and Winter season!

YOUTH EDUCATIONAFTER-SCHOOL ENGINEERING CLUB BY CLASSROOM ANTICSGrades K - 5Classroom Antics’ Mission is to inspire, excite, and enrich the lives of children in today’s world focused on science and technology. To deliver educational hands-on STEM programs that promote enrichment, creativity, and teamwork in the safest environment possible. And most importantly, have fun. Each module offers a unique engineering focus.
A. POWER OF GREENSeptember 4 - September 25How are the oceans, plants, and animals affected by our choices? How do we get electricity inside our homes each day? How do weather patterns play into our design choices? Put on your Environmental Engineering thinking cap as we look at new ways to protect our planet every day. First, we will go to the ocean and re-purpose what most people would call “trash,” into boats, cars, and other practical items. Then, we’ll go on land and use our resources better to help overworked bees pollinate crops and cook using the energy from the sun, instead of dirty power plants. For four weeks, students will explore and invent new ways to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost.
B. MAKER M.D.October 2 - October 30 (no class 10/9)How many unique creatures exist on this planet? Who studies how each of their bodies work to accomplish the important functions needed to survive and thrive? Let’s go on an adventure through the human body as we work together to discover new ways to improve life for all living creatures. In this module, we will conduct hands-on activities to learn how the brain controls our movements, build a mechanical leg for a human, and discuss how these inventions improve life for all living beings, animals, and organisms on this planet. We will even have an opportunity to design a prototype hand, complete with bone and muscle models to make it move. Throughout the module, students will design solutions for medical quandaries in everything from the human blood to a bird beak.
C. AMAZING ARCHITECTSNovember 6 - December 4 (no class 11/27)How closely have you looked at buildings and bridges? Have you thought about what goes into designing and building these structures that people use each day? Using popsicle sticks, rubber bands, paper cups and other household materials, we will work together to build unique models of skyscrapers, suspension bridges, and ziplines. Our projects will model different structures, all the way from ancient egyptian pyramids to modern houses. We will explore scarcity of materials by paying for building supplies with Monopoly money. Each week, students will think about how people use these structures and what goes into designing and building the world around us.
D. SECRET AGENTSJanuary 8 - January 29How often do you communicate with someone else during the day? How many different tools do you use to communicate? Come chat with us as we explore all the different ways humans, animals, and computers communicate with one another. Did you know spiders could send messages in their webs long before websites existed? We’ll have a chance to recreate that. We’ll also study electronic devices that allow us to communicate, as well as how people communicated over long distance before phones were invented. We’ll even build a flashlight to send messages, using a cryptic code. To do this, we’ll learn about secret codes that people have used over the years to keep their messages private and how computer engineers still use secret codes today. Students will also engineer a secret safe to keep all of their messages and belongings from enemy eyes. In this module, students will take the role of a communications engineer and talk about the many ways we connect to one another.
E. SPACE ODYSSEY February 12 - March 4Have you ever wanted to go on an adventure where no one’s ever been before? How would you pack? What would you eat? In this adventure, we are going to OUTER SPACE as Aerospace Engineers. First, we will think about what we should pack and take a test mission to an asteroid to gather samples. Next, we will learn about what astronauts eat and design a tiny garden for the outer space atmosphere to provide fresh food on our trip. Then, we will design our space suit, learning about how different forces in space affect the human body, to make them both fashionable and functional. In the last part of this module, we will visit Mars and build a Rover out of bamboo skewers and styrofoam plates to help scientists explore the Red Planet even after we are gone. In this module, students will think like real engineers who help astronauts get to and comfortably live in outer space every day.

RETRO RECESS Grades K - 5 Instructor: Matt Blowers
It’s the best thing to happen for Kenston children in 1st to 5th grade ever! Turn off the X-box, hand held computer games, and the cell phones and try some good old fashioned fun. If your child thinks SPUD! is just a potato, and RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT is an annoying stop on the way to some local fast food and MOTHER MAY I? is a polite way to get some allowance, then they should sign up for some Retro Recess. They will discover a time machine, full of dodge balls, kick balls, crab soccer balls, plus playground games that will require real thinking and skill. Matt Blowers is an overgrown child who still plays those old fashioned games. He will introduce them to all the games YOU loved as a kid. In the spring we will do outside playground games. YAAAAYYY!
