From our Principal: Ms Chris Ling From our Principal: Ms Chris Ling Welcome back to school! Term 3 is already well underway, and it is exciting to see our students so engaged and eager to learn. We have a lot of interesting things happening during the course of this term, there’s a lot to look forward to, including this week’s Music Incursion and Slow Food Lunch. Some of our students have already hit the ground running, attending the Music Camp at Balmoral State High School last week. Congratulations to all the participating students, who seized this fabulous opportunity to refine their skills, form friendships, collaborate and perform with students from other schools. Soon, our older students will be off to Canberra for the Year 5-6 Camp, and our students in Years 3 and 4 will also be looking forward to their camp later in the year. Our younger students will also have plenty of adventure to look forward to this term. We are currently refining our excursion arrangements and will make an announcement about each of these shortly. Parents and teachers are also reminded that we have our second annual Twilight Conference (‘Inquiring with the Reggio Emilia Approach’) coming up on 9 August. You are very welcome to join us for that event, if you’d like to learn more about how we facilitate and encourage meaningful learning at Cannon Hill State School. There are still a few places left, just get in touch to register. Please see the flyer at the end of this newsletter for more information. We Love to Learn Term 3, Week 2 – Tuesday 24 July 2018

School news

Pyjama Day Thank you to everyone who participated in Pyjama Day on the last day of Term 2! Congratulations to the Year 6 school leaders for raising the resources to fund their projects. Report Cards All report cards from Term 2 were emailed directly to parents and carers last Thursday. If we don’t have your email address on file, your copy has been posted. Please contact the office if you’ve not received a report for each student in your care. If there’s anything that requires clarification or that you’d like to discuss further, please contact the relevant teacher to make an appointment. Congratulations to all our students for their hard work, we look forward to making more progress together this term. 2017 Annual Report If you’d like more information about some of the administrative side of running our school, you might be interested to read our 2017 Annual Report (PDF, 358KB), which was published on our website late last term. The document provides a great snapshot of some key statistics, and a summary of our approach. Term 2 Athletics Carnivals results We held our winter athletics events towards the end of last term, with Tabloids Day for the younger students on 13 June, and the Senior Athletics Carnival on 20 June. It was great to see students extending themselves to deliver their best athletic performances, but even better to see so much teamwork, perseverance, resilience and determination on display. It’s really encouraging to see how well students are developing these positive and versatile attributes, at the same time as enjoying some friendly competition. Congratulations to the Thunderbolts, for their victory on points, and to the Shooting Stars, for their ‘best presented’ win.

Year 2 Museum In the final week of Term 2, students in Year 2 showcased some of fabulous work when they opened their Ancient Roman Museum to the school community. Here’s just a sample:

Well done to all involved! Such creativity…

Year 2 excursion Year 2 will be off to visit Brisbane City Hall on Monday July 30. Students will have the opportunity to check out the Museum of Brisbane, as well as a trip up to the clock tower. Permission notes have been sent home and these, as well as payment, are due back by Thursday 26 July. Any parents who are available to assist with accompanying students on the train and for the excursion, please contact one of the class teachers. Term 3 Morning Sport Morning sport this term begins in Week 3, runs until the second-last week of term, and involves:

Monday – Girls’ Soccer Tuesday – Mixed Soccer Wednesday – Boys’ Soccer Thursday – Running Club

Each session starts at 8.15am. Term 3 Lunchtime Activities This term’s lunchtime activities are likely to include Art Club, Environment Club, Coding Club, and Library-based activities (including games), as well as banks play. We will publish full details on the calendar on the school website in due course. Term 3 Extracurricular Activities We will let you know more information about this term’s extracurricular activities (like Chess Club) via a separate Konnective, when details are finalised.

Kitchen Garden update Year 4 students will be participating in kitchen garden on Tuesday 28 August and Tuesday 18 September, 11.35am to 1.35pm. Parent helpers will be needed – please contact the Year 4 teachers if you’re available.

Page 5: We Love to Learn - Cannon Hill State School · 7/24/2018  · Pyjama Day Thank you to everyone who participated in Pyjama Day on the last day of Term 2! Congratulations to the Year

The Kitchen Garden provides so many great opportunities for our students to learn about producing and preparing food – it’s an activity everyone looks forward to! A few parents have asked for more information about this program, we’ll try to bring you more details via our website shortly. School Banking day has changed Students participating in school banking will need to bring their deposit books in on Mondays, not Thursdays, this term. School Payments This term, school payments will be processed on Tuesdays. This changes the timing for EFTPOS payments, which can only be made between 8.30am and 9.30am on Tuesdays. It also means that if you’ve completed a Credit Card authority form, these will be processed on the next Tuesday. We can still accept payments at other times, just not EFTPOS. If you want to pay accounts with cash, these can be placed in a clearly labelled envelope in the money slot in the office during office hours. Similarly, you can complete a credit card authority (these are on the brochure stand in the office), place that in an envelope in the money slot. These changes don’t affect BPoint payments, which of course you can make at any time using the link on your invoice. Year 5/6 Camp The Canberra camp for Years 5 and 6 is coming up on Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August. Students will have the opportunity to experience a range of cultural activities and learning experiences, including what will for many be their first visit to the snow. Full details have been sent home to the families of participating students, and the office is now accepting partial and full payments towards the cost. Unless a prior arrangement has been made, all payments are due to be finalised by 1 August 2018. Please see your class teacher if you believe you might need to make a payment plan or extension.

Premier’s Reading Challenge will finish soon The Premier’s Reading Challenge for this year finishes on Friday 24 August. Please complete your reading list forms and return them to class teachers as soon as possible. Book Week Save the Date! Our Book Week parade will be on Tuesday 28 August. Traditionally, students and teachers dress up as a character from one of their favourite books, and bring along a copy of the book to show and share. This year, the theme is ‘Find Your Treasure’. We usually have the Book Parade at 9.15am in the Prep-2 Playground. Father’s Day Stall Another thing to save the date for – the P&C’s Father’s Day stall for this year will be held during class time on Friday 31 August. We’ll send you more info as the day draws near. Maker Space Did you know, we have our very own tinker lab – the Maker Space – in the library? In this area, students explore STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) activities, learning how things work by developing fun gadgetry and kinetic art. Students are able to access this area to develop skills relevant to their learning play, project play and Reggio Emilia areas of interest. Learning in the Maker Space is facilitated by kinetic artist, teacher and parent Sandra Landolt. Children who are interested but not yet participating in a project in the maker space can express interest via their teachers, Joy Pohlner, or Sandra Landolt. Students using the Maker Space would benefit from access to a vice like any of those pictured below.

If you have a vice that you are not using, or could help us to purchase a few at a discounted rate, please contact the office, or email Sandra. Helping Hands update

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Sheyna Rooding, who is now the Coordinator at Helping Hands Cannon Hill. Places are still available for before and after school care. For more information or to register, please contact Sheyna via email [email protected] or phone 0475 963 121.

Helping Hands has also recently had a bit of a paint refresh and a few other little improvements, if you haven’t had a chance to have a look at the facility, why not check it out.

Breakfast Club We’ve finished our first term of running Breakfast Club on both Tuesday and Thursday, and are pleased to report it’s been very well-received. In the final week of Term 2, we were lucky enough to have a very special group of volunteers (a group of cricketers from the Queensland Bulls) help out with the Tuesday session. Students were able to chat with the players, get some sporting career advice and souvenir their autographs over breakfast. Thanks again to Foodbank and Queensland Cricket for arranging this special experience.

Playground Committee News The P&C’s Playground Committee and school staff have been observing how students engage with our playground facilities at CHSS, and consulting with the school community (including students) to inform and formulate an improvement plan. The playground design is under way, but it’s not too late to have your say. The committee has been looking at all the play spaces around the school, with a strong focus on the 3 to 6 areas. We've also been observing how and where the kids play on breaks, and taking into account considerations like Reggio Emilia pedagogy, loose parts play, proprioceptive work, sensory, environmental, problem solving, risk management and friendship-building. We're really keen to design a long lasting and enriching play space. The P to 2 children designed their ideal play space last term (see some of the great pictures below), and now we're keen to get students in Years 3 to 6 sharing their ideas too.

Page 10: We Love to Learn - Cannon Hill State School · 7/24/2018  · Pyjama Day Thank you to everyone who participated in Pyjama Day on the last day of Term 2! Congratulations to the Year

You can see all of these designs displayed under the year 4 classroom, behind the main sandpit. If you are in years 3 to 6 we'd love you to share your playground design ideas. Please submit your drawings, photos or noted to the office by Monday 31 July.

The next Playground Committee meeting will be held at 3pm on Thursday 26 July, in the prep classroom. If you have a special skill, like construction, design or are just really keen to get involved, please join us! All parents and years levels are welcome.

P&C activities coming up: Save the date: This year’s School Disco will be on Friday 14 September. We usually run the event in two parts, with the Prep-Year 2 event first (around dusk), followed by the senior school event. This is always a great fundraiser and a whole lot of fun, watch this space for more information. Next P&C Meeting: Our next P&C Meeting will be in the school library, on Monday 3 September 2018, at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend, we’d love to see some new faces, even if you can’t make it to every single meeting. For more information about the P&C and what we do, please check out our page on the school website.

Community News Balmoral SHS Musical Many of our students go on to attend Balmoral State High School – and Vivienne Tawse, who used to teach instrumental music here, now works there too. Vivienne has asked us to let you know about the students’ performance of Judith Prior’s What’s New Pussycat, coming up next month (10-11 August). It looks like a fun show!

Before you hit Send… Parents of tweens and teens might be interested to check out this upcoming cyber safety workshop hosted by Brisbane City Council. This free session is focussed on navigating the social media landscape, and will be held at Wynnum Library on Thursday 9 August. It will be hosted by author and radio host Rebecca Sparrow. Registration is required. Construction work at St Ollie’s Our neighbours at St Oliver Plunkett’s have asked us to let you know that a building project is about to begin on the corner of Camelia Street and Molloy Road, where some new classrooms will be built on their bottom oval. The retaining wall in that area will also be replaced. There may be some disruption to foot and car traffic during this period, but St Ollie’s have asked the builders (SJ Higgins) to avoid peak busy times like drop-off and pick-up. There should also be a letterbox drop (with the builder’s contact details) to local residents. If you experience any issues, you can contact the St Ollie’s office on 3902 2100, or email [email protected]. We are advised that this construction project will be completed by the end of the year – there is more information about their works schedule and campus masterplan on the St Ollie’s website.

St Ollies have also let us know that Brisbane City Council did a bit of work on the Camelia Street pickup zone over the holidays. Hopefully this will help to better regulate the flow of traffic at pickup time.
