WELCOME

There’s never been a better time to make a difference in our community. People of all ages and backgrounds in the

Lowcountry are striving to reach their full potential, and the Y is here to

help. We offer opportunities for people from all walks of life to improve

their health, strengthen their families and serve our community. Our

work is making a positive difference in people’s lives by addressing

critical community needs.

• Many children are faced with learning opportunity gaps as they

grow up. The Y offers programs to enhance learning and provides

experiences for growth and achievement.

• With fast-paced, high-stress lifestyles, many families find it difficult

to achieve balance and spend quality time together. The Y offers

programs to help families strengthen bonds, have fun together and

incorporate healthy habits into their lives.

• Many people, including our growing senior population and newly

arrived military families are not connected to our community and

neighbors. The Y connects these friends and neighbors by offering opportunities for belonging and involvement,

so individuals of all ages find personal enrichment through social interaction and helping others.

Thanks to our members, generous donors, dedicated volunteers, hard-working staff and enthusiastic partners, the Y is a

positive force in northern Beaufort and Jasper counties.

We’re pleased to present a selection of meaningful accomplishments achieved in 2019.

• The Wardle Family YMCA welcomed 2184 NEW members in 2019, meaning we received 7,550 members over the year. With the addition of program participants this means that 12,000+ of your Lowcountry neighbors were impacted by Y programs and services!

• Y programs improved the lives of 3,700 children and youth, helping them thrive and grow up to be healthy, caring, responsible adults.

• 622 campers attended our summer day camps, which included traditional, kiddie and specialty camps offering 11 weeks of fun and education at 7 locations in Beaufort and Jasper counties.

• 43,450 meals were served free of charge during our year-round food program, that includes all summer camps and our after school program. This program is made possible with the assistance of an existing national partnership grant between YMCA of the USA, the Walmart Foundation and the Beaufort County School District.

• 15 Y Member Volunteers spent 4 hours on a Saturday in September painting, refreshing our exterior landscaping and completing minor touch ups around the Y facility during our first semi-annual Y Clean Up Day.

• The YMCA Migrant Education Summer Camp for children of seasonal migrant workers again hosted 56 children in it’s 5–week day camp and 55 young adults in the OSY (Out of School Youth) program.

• Hundreds of Y members, staff, and community volunteers donated 3,000+ hours assisting the Y itself as well as volunteering out in our community in 2019 — bravo volunteers!

• Our Fit over Fifty class boasted 4,368 participants over the year and our Senior Shape Up class saw a 4% growth in participation. Our spin classes cycled their way to 10,000 miles in 2019!

• Our After School program welcomed 477 kids age 4 –14 at 4 different sites in Beaufort County and our Discovery Kids Preschool served 38 children with 65% receiving financial aid. 100% of children that graduated from the preschool program started Kindergarten measuring at or above grade level.

• Our BYAC Tiger Sharks Swim Team trained 83 swimmers, competing in 11 swim meets including two held at the Wardle Family Y. 6 BYAC Team members qualified and competed in the Regional Meet held in March.

• The 13th annual Beaufort River Swim challenged 147 swimmers on May 18, 2019 raising over $14,000 for the Y Learn to Swim Program, which provides free swim lessons to local youth.

• We taught swimming skills and water safety to over 800 youth and adults in 2019 including kids from our Migrant Education Summer Camp, Thumbs Up, Boys & Girls Club, CAPA, Port Royal Elementary School and Ridgeland Elementary. We dispersed over $20,000 in scholarship assistance to make swim lessons possible for local children who would not otherwise be able to afford them.

• 472 participants were engaged in fun, active play in YMCA youth sports.

• Our member-driven Togetherhood program logged 450+ hours of volunteer projects within our community, assisting Friends of Caroline Hospice, HELP of Beaufort, Beaufort Twilight Run, Salvation Army/Postal Carriers Food Drive, St. Helena Senior Center, Port Royal Trunk or Treat, CAPA/KidFest, and more.

HEALTHY LIVING AT ALL AGES!

“When I first moved to Beaufort six years ago, I tried to find a

gym that would best fit me and what I was looking for. After

visiting several places, I decided on joining the Y. The feeling of

going to the Y is ‘feeling at home’. The staff has always been friendly, the classes are

challenging, and I became familiar with regular members who would come in as often as I did.

The Y has become like a family to me. So much in fact, that I

asked Denice if I could be a part of her team. I didn’t really need to work, but I wanted to be a

part of something great with a team who I knew I would love to work with! Most of the time

I don’t even feel like I’m at work ,because I enjoy being at the Y so much. I am grateful

that I have the Y in my life, that I have become friends with our staff and members, and that I

have found a place that truly is a second home.”

-Veronica Sinor, Personal Trainer & Y Healthy Living Coordinator

With a mission centered on inspiring healthy individuals and communities, the Y is a

place where people of all ages and abilities can come together to work toward a

healthier, more balanced lifestyle in a welcoming and supportive environment. As a

result, thousands of youth, adults, and families in our community are living

healthier, more confident and connected.

The Wardle Family YMCA was excited to introduce MX4 Small Group Training in

2019: a fresh, motivating exercise experience that delivers results and includes not

only state-of-the-art equipment but one-on-one time with a personal trainer plus

the natural motivation that comes with working out with a group. MX4 combines

best-in-class training tools with exciting workouts to help members improve

cardiovascular fitness, power, strength and endurance in a way that’s right for

their body and abilities. 88 Y members utilized these specialty group training

sessions in 2019.

The Wellness and Aquatics departments continue to add and improve our

offerings focused on active adults/healthy agers with Senior Shape Up, Zumba,

yoga, three different types of water aerobics classes, Fit over Fifty, line dance

and our YMCA signature program Enhanced Fitness.

“There are so many benefits to Y water aerobic classes. Increased stamina, muscle strength and balance, which is so important at my age! Plus it

is easy on the joints.

The Y instructors are knowledgeable and they really care about us and our health. The comradery with the other members in class has been wonderful and

unexpected - they have become my dear friends. These classes really boost my energy and spirits, for the whole day!”

-Terry Pfieffer

INCREASE OPPORTUNITY, ACCESS & ACHIEVEMENT FOR YOUTH

At the Y we focus on the healthy development of children and youth by

providing programs for people of all ages that help them develop and maintain

healthy, connected, and fulfilling lives.

We work side by side with our neighbors, private and public partnerships, and

member volunteers to meet critical needs of our community and ensure that

everyone - regardless of age, income or background - has the opportunity to

learn, grow and thrive. We strongly believe in the power of community partnership

and that, along with dedicated volunteers and valuable financial supports, has

allowed for the positive impact we are making in the lives of local individuals

and families.

Through this support we are able to offer Discovery Kids Preschool for ages

3–5; an education-based afterschool program at the Wardle Family Y and at 3

offsite locations via a partnership with Beaufort County School District, summer

camps in both Beaufort and Jasper counties, free and discounted swim lessons,

day camps held throughout the year, and the Migrant Education Summer Camp.

Additionally, we offer a full slate of youth sports including BYAC swim team,

outdoor & indoor soccer, basketball, t-ball, gymnastics and flag football.

“The YMCA and it’s financial

assistance program has been a

tremendous help for my family. As a

single working parent, it’s a burden

to worry where your children will go

after school that is safe and

reliable. The Y staff has given me

one less thing to worry about. My

daughter learned so much in the

Discovery Kids Preschool and is now

attending the afterschool program.

I have been able to go and work out

at the Y gym as well—it’s my guilty

pleasure—but my girls love the Y

nursery so that makes it a bit less

‘guilty’ for me. I was recently

diagnosed with high blood pressure

so being able to afford the gym and

take fitness classes has been

wonderful. I recommend the Y to

my family and friends because its

truly a great place with friendly

staff and a good environment”

-Ebony Brown, YMCA member

“My family became part of the YMCA preschool program when my oldest was ready to transition from daycare to a more structured environment. The school provided a

wonderful balance of educational lessons, coupled with a fun, age appropriate curriculum. So many preschools simply attempt to boost numbers to make a profit.

The Y has always focused on the children and helping them grow.

When it came time for my second child to turn three there was no question where he would go. We were overjoyed to be back with the Y for his education to begin. He is currently in the Owls classroom and loves it. We have always had such care and

support from the preschool. The kids have enjoyed a fun and loving atmosphere to learn in and the support we have there, never wavers. Even when experiencing financial

troubles this year, the Y has been quick to help us find a solution to help our family. My youngest child is only one but I have already told the teachers to be ready because

she will most certainly be coming to them too when she’s old enough!”
