Did You Know?by Bernice Jala

The Fourth of July—aka Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941. However, the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution.

On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of Americanindependence, withfestivitiesrangingfromfireworks, paradesandconcerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

The Birth of Independence Day When the initial battles in the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain, and those who did were considered radical. By the middle of the following year, howev-er, many more colonists had come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments such as those expressed in the best-selling pamphlet “Common Sense,” published by Thomas Paine in early 1776. On June 7, when the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, the Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a motion calling for the colonies’ independence. Amid heated debate, Congress postponed the vote on Lee’s resolution, but appointedafive-mancommittee—includingThomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Robert R. Livingston of New York—to draft a formal state-ment justifying the break with Great Britain. John Adams believed that July 2 was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died July 4, 1826 - the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of Lee’s resolution for independence in a near-unanimous vote (the New York delegation abstained, but latervotedaffirmatively).Onthatday,JohnAdamswrotetohiswifeAbigailthat July 2 “will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniver-sary festival” and that the celebration should include “pomp and parade, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfiresandilluminationsfromoneendofthiscontinenttothe other.” On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.

Early Fourth of July Celebrations In pre-Revolutionary years, colonists held celebrations on the king’s birthday, whichincludedtheringingofbells, bonfires, processionsandspeechmaking.Bycontrast, during the summer of 1776 some colonists celebrated the birth of inde-pendence by holding mock funerals for King George III, as a way of symbolizing the end of the monarchy’s hold on America and the triumph of liberty. Festivitiesincludingconcerts, bonfires, paradesandthefiringofcannonsandmusketsusuallyaccompaniedthefirstpublicreadingsoftheDeclarationofIndependence, beginning immediately after its adoption. Philadelphia held the firstannualcommemorationofindependenceonJuly4,1777,whileCongresswas still occupied with the ongoing war. George Washington issued double rations of rum to all his soldiers to mark the anniversary of independence in 1778, and in 1781, several months before the keyAmericanvictoryatYorktown,MassachusettsbecamethefirststatetomakeJuly4thanofficialstateholiday. After the Revolutionary War, Americans continued to commemorate Inde-pendence Day every year, in celebrations that allowed the new nation’s emerging political leaders to address citizens and create a feeling of unity. By the last decade of the 18th century, the two major political parties—Federalists and Democratic-Republicans—that had arisen began holding separate Fourth of July celebrations in many large cities.

Fourth of July Becomes a National Holiday The tradition of patriotic celebration became even more widespread after the War of 1812, in which the United States again faced Great Britain. In 1870, the U.S. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday. In 1941, the provision was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees. Over the years, the po-litical importance of the holiday would decline, but Independence Day remained an important national holiday and a symbol of patriotism. Falling in mid-summer, the Fourth of July has since the late 19th century

become a major focus of leisure activities and a common occa-sion for family get-togethers, often involv-ingfireworksand outdoor barbecues. The most common symbol of the holiday is the Americanflag, and a common musical accom-paniment is “The Star-Span-gled Banner,” the national anthem of the United States.

Memorial Day Ceremony and Annual Picnicby Bernice Jala Our “Old Fashioned” Memorial Day Ceremony and Picnic was held this year on May 26th. I wish to thank all of those who attended our ceremony. It is heartwarming to see so many of our members there to pay honor to those who gave their lives and those who fought for the freedom we share as a nation. We often get so involved in our everyday life, we do not think of what that freedom really means. This was a great time to show our appreciation. I would like to thank our speakers Alina Hans, Ed Banz, Dawn Bukaj, State Representative Rosemary Brown and Father John from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Each of our speakers spoke special and heartfelt words that payed homage to what Memorial Day is all about – those who gave their all so we can share the liberty that is ours today. I also want to thank our veterans who presented the wreath and raised and loweredourflagwhileBrianKraussplayedtaps.BrianalsoplayedAmazingGrace following the moment of silence. As always, he did a beautiful job.

A special thank you to John Wassermann for donating his time as our DJ/singer for the ceremony and the picnic. He has done this for Wild Acres for several years and has always given me help and support in preparing this event. In keeping with our theme, I would like to thank Hank Thollot from their Country Cruisers Car Club and everyone who brought their beautiful classic and antique cars and joining us on this very special day. Thank you to Galina, our recreation director, our staff and volunteers, our cooks and servers Anthony and Joy Reichelt, Andy Grishin and Galina Grishina, Nick DiBlasio, Aron Stremt , Anastasia Grigoryeva and Julia Liszka for all of their hard work. Our maintenance department did a fantastic job in setting up our park so everyone could enjoy the festivities. As most of you know I have been doing this event for the past 16 years. It is very near and dear to my heart and I want to thank all of those who give me their support and guidance for this very special holiday event. I sincerely hope that we can get more of our younger members to help carry on special events like this one in the future.

Recipe Corner

Ahh, summer! Time for relaxing and having fun with family and friends. We all want to enjoy getting together without a lot of work involved. Here are some easy and tasty recipes that everyone can enjoy.

This smoothie recipe from Terasa Tarquini is a great start to any day:

Strawberry Smoothie8 strawberries2 sliced bananas1 cup almond milk2 tablespoons honey½ cup ice

• Blend all ingredients until smooth and enjoy!

Next we have a delicious recipe from Kathy Banz that will go well at any get together or picnic:

Date n’ Nut Bread 10 oz. package pitted, chopped dates 1½ cups boiling water1 tablespoon butter1 teaspoon baking soda1 egg-beaten1 teaspoon vanilla3 cups flour1¼ cup sugar¼ teaspoon baking powder½ teaspoon salt1 cup chopped walnuts

• Put dates in boiling water with butter and baking soda. When date mixture is cool, add egg and vanilla. Stir in dry ingredients, then add nuts last

• Grease and flour loaf pans. Bake in preheated oven @ 325° for 45-60 mins (convection 300°). Watch carefully and lower temperature if necessary. Yield: Two 8x4 loaves

• Serve with cream cheese that has been whipped with a little milk so it spreads easier

Salads are always welcome at any gathering. Here is one from Mary Breitenbach that can keep in the refrigerator for several months:

Refrigerator Cucumber Salad4 thinly sliced cucumbers1 large red onion - sliced1 large green bell pepper - sliced1 tbsp. salt 2 cups white vinegar1½ cups sugar1 teaspoon celery flakes1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

• Mix cucumbers, onions, peppers and salt. Set aside.

• Put vinegar, sugar, celery flakes and pepper flakes in a pot, bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add 2 handfuls of ice until melted.

• Place all vegetables in large Mason jar. Pour mixture over cucumbers. Store in refrigerator.

Jill Odynsky is sharing this recipe with us:

Grilled Chicken Bruschetta¼ cup sun-dried tomato vinaigrette dressing, divided. 4 small boneless skinless chicken breast halves. 2 tomatoes, finely chopped. ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese. ¼ cup fresh basil or 1 teaspoon dried basil. 1 garlic clove minced

• Mix chopped tomato, mozzarella cheese, basil and garlic in a bowl with 2 Tbsp. of Kraft Sun-dried tomato vinaigrette. Set aside.

• Heat grill to medium heat.• Place chicken in large resealable plastic

bag. Add remaining dressing; more if desired, seal bag. Turn bag over several times to evenly coat chicken with dressing. Refrigerate 15 min. Remove chicken from bag; discard bag and dressing.

• Cover half the grill with sheet of heavy-duty foil. Place chicken on uncovered side of grill; grill 6 min.

• Turn chicken over; place on foil. Top with tomato mixture. Grill 8 min. or until chicken is done and cheese melts.

Now for our cocktail. It’s sure to be a hit at your special summer party:

Sunset Punch8 ounces bourbon 8 ounces white vermouth ½ cup fresh lemon juice, plus lemon slices for garnish ¼ cup simple syrup (see Note) 12 ounces chilled ginger beer

• In a punch bowl, combine the bourbon, vermouth, lemon juice and syrup. Add the ginger beer and lemon slices and serve over ice.

• Note: To make simple syrup, heat 1/4 cup of sugar with 1/4 cup of water and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool.

If any community member has a special recipe they would like to place in Recipe Corner, please call Bernice at 828-6686 or drop it off at the office.
