The Housemaid's Daughter by Barbara Mutch
Barbara Mutch's stunning first novel tells a
story of love and duty colliding on the arid
plains of Apartheid-era South Africa
When Cathleen Harrington leaves her home
in Ireland in 1919 to travel to South Africa,
she knows that she does not love the man
she is to marry there —her fiance Edward,
whom she has not seen for five years.
Isolated and estranged in a small town in the harsh Karoo
desert, her only real companions are her diary and her
housemaid, and later the housemaid's daughter, Ada.

CREMONA GARDENING CLUB Are you interested in gardening? Are you a new gardener, or already an avid and experienced green thumb? Let's start a Gardening Club! The club will offer the opportunity to meet with other garden-ers - both new and seasoned - and share gardening ideas, ex-perience and tips for gardening in our sometimes challenging conditions. The hope is that the club will evolve to have seed and cutting exchanges, guest speakers, garden tours, plant sales, etc. This first meeting will also involve some brainstorming to see what members would want. Attendance at the first meeting is free. If there is enough inter-est, a club will be officially formed, and membership will be $15 per person. (This will cover rent and speaker costs for fu-ture meetings). If April 12th doesn't work for you, but you would like to join in, please contact Rosemarie McGonigle at (403-335-5443), or [email protected] to register.
