I have the marr iage annulled. - Broken-hearted, she leaves Pelton and goes to New York, hop-

j ing to become a model. When ; her little money is stolen, she runs into difficulties, but is res- cued by Terry Sullivan, reporter,

j who temporarily turns pver his apartment to her. Believing that she has the makings of a good model, he offers to lend her the money for training, asks a model

i named Dot Turner to help her. j and arranges for her to live with Dot. The latter, who believes

{ that pull is more important than training, is hoping to land a big

j job through her friend Duke I Maxwell, popular orchestra leader, whose father heads an ad-

I vcrtising agency.

CHAPTER X '“17ALERIE did not see Terry on

Monday morning. He phoned land said that he would be out (of town for several days.

“Now about money,” he said. “I ’ve sent a check for you to Dot’s apartment by messenger. I called her this morning and everything is all arranged. Meet her at her place about ten and she’ll pilot you over to Models, Inc.”

“ I can never thank you, Terry— ” Valerie began.

“No thanks. Just be a good girl and work hard.”j Leaving the phone, Valerie defeated what to wear. She must look Cher best on her first visit to the (school for models.

The plaid dress was not right. Already she caught the difference between the plain, well-tailored clothes of the women she met on the streets and the lines of the plaid, which were all wrong.

Fiinally, she discarded the plaid for a simple black dress she had worn in the store back in Pelton.. The dress was in good style. It had been marked down In the French Room. With a cellar and cuff set which she had added. Valerie approved of the whole effect.

There was a mirror in the closet door. She swung about slowly, thoughtfully appraising h e r s e l f from head to foot. Terry had said that her make-up was bad. There was something wrong, but working over it didn’t improve it.

W ell—she must go. She felt nervous, and yet her heart beat with suppressed excitement. Today she was taking her first step toward (her ambition.

She threw a nod of confidence (over her shoulder at the girl in the tenirror. “You must succeed,” she (told her. “ You cannot let me down

nor Terry.”She felt a stab of regret as she

(closed the door on the comfortable, shabby living room. It was like (leaving Terry behind. She would (never forget the time she had spent feere. What a change had come over [her! Only two days before, she had been despondent, completely beat- jen. Today she left with high hopes.

FROM the first, Valerie realized that it would not be easy to live

With Dot, for Dot didn’t hesitate to put her in her place.

“Terry ’s always pulling some one out of a hole,” was Dot’s remark before Valerie was fairly inside her apartment. “Terry ’s like that.”

“Yes— I know,” said Valerie.Dot handed her the envelope

[Terry had sent by special messenger, regarded the check Valerie tydrew from it.

“ We can share expenses here,” Ishe observed carelessly.* Later, they sat in the bedroom jwhile Dot fussed over an elaborate [make-up and talked.

“You can take all this training if you want,” she said, “ but it really doesn’t count for much. They’ll put you through your paces and you’ll think you’re ready for the starting gun, but let me tell you something —never forget the other entries. They’re in there to win, too. Tht y ’ll <crowd_you out before you take the

first lap. Maybe I don’t know!”“ I suppose you do,” Valerie

agreed politely.Dot rose from the dressing table,

and tossed off a filmy negligee. She slipped into a sleek black dress.

“ Zip me up, will you?” she said. Valerie obeyed, while Dot drifted

into an explanation of how she first met Duke Maxwell.

“ His father has dough and was sore at Duke because he had this orchestra,” she said, moving into the closet and returning with a scrap of velvet and feathers whicii she perched on her blond sculptured curls. “ But the boy has made good. His father has seen the light and Duke made himself solid when he suggested a smart advertlsinjj campaign for Noma>d cigarettes which his father’s agency handles

“That’s where I come in. I ’m going to model in the photos they start shooting next week. Just an experiment but, if it goes over” — Dot picked up a cloth coat with a huge fur collar — “ I ’ll be wearing mink instead of this!”

T ’HEY left the apartment, went M o a bank, and cashed Terry ’s

cheok, which was a generous one Dot’s eyes fixed on the roll of money which Valerie tucked into her purse With that money in her possession she became Dot’s best friend.

Dot slipped a hand through hei arm, and said, “Before we investigate this school, let’s celebrate.”

“ Celebrate what?”“Your new affluence. Come along

—I ’ll introduce you to the besl cocktail lounge in town. It ’s a good place to make contacts.”

Valerie had no desire to follow this suggestion, but was afraid to cross Dot.

When they reached the plact mentioned, she soon found thal they needed no money for th< drinks Dot ordered, which wen quickly paid for by one of several men who sauntered up to greet them.

Valerie barely touched her lips d her glass, and she thoroughly disliked the men whom Dot intro- • duced. They were definitely idlers.

Furthermore, she thought uneasily. suppose Terry should see het sitting at a table in a cocktal lounge instead of visiting the schod for models and enrolling?

The thought made her feel si guilty that she lost all interest ii her surroundings. Dot spoke he) name twice before she looked ui and saw a tall young man with bril- liant dark eyes standing beside her

“Duke Maxwell,” said Dot.

VALERIE, thinking of Penny an< how thrilled she would be t<

have this chance to meet the orchestra leader, smiled up at him.

He dropped into a chair besidi her. “Who are you?” he asked.

It was easy to see Dot’s instant disapproval of the open interest ii his face.

“Valerie is a friend of Terry Sullivan’s,” she said stiffly. “ She hat just come to New York and is staying with me for a while.”

Duke’s interest seemed to quicken. After asking Valerie how sht liked New York and other conventional questions, he turned to Dot and suggested that they all lunct together, but Dot replied that sh< and Valerie had an important engagement and were already late They must be on their wayy.

“What about dinner?” he persisted, rising with them.

Valerie wondered whether h< meant to include her in the invitation but, if so, Dot ignored any suet implication and accepted for herself alone.

The two girls left and, as they stood waiting for a taxi. Valerii tactfully avoided any further mention of Duke. Though he had spoken scarcely a dozen words tc ( her, she was quick to sense thal Dot was jealous.

She was aware that Dot had said nothing of her, Valerie’s, ambition to become a model. Oh, Dot was clever! After all, one had to be clever in a city where competition was keen and where the contacts about which Dot talked so constantly were not easily secured.

More spectacular are the huge plants which produce ammonium nitrate fo r explosive use, but in small, colsely-guard- ed buildings chemists and engineers are perfecting processes which may make the United States independent o f imports fo r the making of the essential aluminum, and at the same time construction is being rushed on a new phosphate plant which will produce concentrated fertilizer for British and American consumption.

T V A Director David E. Lilien- thal recently announced that common clay— kaolin— is a newly discovered source for the alumina from which aluminum is made.Large-scale tests have proved that from three tons of clay, found liberally throughout the South, one ton of alumina may be extracted. In an additional process, the alumina is reduced to one-half as much ingot aluminum, ready for fashioning into parts for speedy fighter and long-range bombing planes.

sas, but they cannot fill the increased demand for the strong, lightweight metal.

T V A experiments to date have only proved the practicability of making aluminum from the clay, Lilienthal said, and further tests to estimate costs of production are under way. However, he believes that the cost w ill be comparable to that o f importing bauxite and ex-1 tracting the metal from the ore.

A few miles away from the g igantic power plants and munitions plants here ,the Reynolds Metals Company is completing construction on a $13,000,000 aluminum reduction plant Clay, as well as imported bauxite, w ill be used in its operations.

Huge piles of yellow dirt are stacked beside the uncompleted buildings, ready for operations to begin.

Phosphate Plant BegunDesigning and construction of

the $1,000,000 concentrated phosphate plant were begun recently immediately after authorization of the project made necessary by requests of the British Purchasing Commission in this country.

Britain, the commission said, needs phosphate to enrich its lands, so that more food might be raised and fewer ships needed for food transport. The necessity for keeping ships free for war purposes, and out of the submarine lanes, also made it necessary for the British to use concentrated phosphates.

The phosphates made here already in a plant with a yearly pro-

I duction of 100,000 tons, and which will be made in the new 50,000-ton

The second territory-w ide blackout has come to a successful end. W ith but a few exceptions, according to reports issued immediately follow ing the blackout the other evening, it was found that the entire population o f the Hawaiian Islands has proven its cooperative attitude beyond any doubt__so much so that in many districts throughout the B ig Island, fo r instance, there were business establishments and private residences that extinguished their lights long before the prearranged signals were given and waited in the dark.

The cooperative spirit displayed in the two blackouts held during the last fourteen months is beyond criticism and reproach. But the over-anxiety and eagerness with which the people as a whole responded because the entire under- taking was pre-arranged, while many others simply beat the signals to the blackout, gave the whole a ffa ir a certain lack o f reality. Leing just a drill, w ith but a few planes buzzing in the sky and then these being hardly visible, perhaps it is too much to expect a closer degree o f realism.

However, now that we have had two drills,we feel that it is time that the territory ’s population hold a blackout that v i i l carry more realism into such an important undertaking.

Now that Hawaii is in the swing with Am erica to do a good job in total preparedness why not hold a blackout week on some 1 night during a given or prearranged week when a sudden uniform signal throughout the territory gives us notice o f the arrival o f a sudden imaginary “ invasion o f the enemy’ , a “ night raid” that takes us by surprise?

Details can be easily worked out with the same expe- 2ienced effic ien t body o f men who did such a good job so fa r at the head o f such an undertaking.

Hitting their stride in the third inning, Iron Works started banging the ball all over the lot to tally two, three and then three more runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively to salt the game away. They collected 14 hits all told and drove o ff A lbert Cabrera, the Millers’ ace, in the fifth- inning. The latter was replaced by Jimmie Bell who yielded five hits and two more runs.

The losers managed to tally once in the third and three more in the sixth for their four runs. Leading the Iron Works’ hit parade were Kema Kanakaole with a perfect score of two in two, Marion Ignacio with a homer, and Iwao Usa- gawa, A lex Penovaroff and Baker with two hits in four attempts, each. George Liborio of the losers got two out of three.

Pitcher Brown Hot Up at Kaumana stellar two-hit

pitching by pitcher Enoch Brown together with airtight support and concentrated offensive drives enabled Helco .to blank Davies. Helco batters scored once in the first, twice in the fourth, and seven in the fifth for a big total of 10 runs, being just as effective against Soichi Matsuda who replaced Francis Chock on the mound in the midst of the fifth inning blitz.

Monjou Masutani of baseball fame took over the mound duties in the ending of the sixth for Davies and although nicked for a single, slowballed his opponents to submission. Brute Matsubara of the Helco’s was top hitter o f the day with two out of four.

I t was announced that the usual Saturday afternoon triple-header will not be played as the field will be used by teams participating in the inter-island Japanese oldtimers’ softball tournament. The next set of games are listed for next Tuesday afternoon when Helco faces County and Waiakea Mill tackles Canec in two very crucial contests.

Continuing where they left o ff on Monday night, the greatly rejuvenated Haili girls team led by Harriet B. Nahale-a set back Alexander Soares Dairy

men stars 15-3, 13-15, 15-10 last night at Lyman Hall in one o f the opening second round matches of the HRC women’s volleyball league.

In the other match last night Elder Gardner’s M IA ’s were extended to the limit before beating Peter Kamano’s Hilo CYO girls 18-16, 11-15, 15-9.

By winning last night, Hailis are credited with wins over both M IA and Dairymen, the two teams that finished in a tie for the first round title, and are definitely in the picture as far as the second series is concerned.

Although losing, Hilo CYO made a creditable showing last night as they gave the M IA lassies, first round co-champions, a close and torrid game. A fte r losing the first deuce set, CYO copped the second set 15-11 but the steady playing and fine placements o f the winners were too much for the underdogs to overcome as they lost the last set and with it the match.
