TRANSCRIPT
We put together and handed out almost 2,000 DIY
Christmas Ornament Kits in December. Each kit contained
the ingredients and supplies children needed to make at
least 3 salt dough ornaments. We had so much fun
putting them together, and we had even more fun seeing
the photos families sent in of them making the ornaments
in their homes!
COVID-19 may have kept us from going lots of places in
2020, but it didn’t stop people from getting some fresh air
and spending time in our parks!
We have trail counters in 10 parks across Spartanburg
County (mostly on walking trails) and we counted more
than 400,000 people who walked by the counters this year!
Nearly 100,000 of those were counted at Tyger River Park
alone. Those are our highest numbers yet, by far.
Spartanburg Parks
Many people are practicing safe social distancing and
still enjoying time outside in our parks. They’re using
#spartanburgparks to share their favorite moments.

While our community centers we closed this year,
we took the opportunity to do some major
renovations on several of them. A few are still
works in progress, but the Chesnee Community
Center’s makeover is complete. We reopened
to the public with new floors throughout the building,
as well as a fresh coat of paint and new furniture.
The fitness center at the Chesnee Community Center
also got a big upgrade at the end of 2020.
We painted the walls and brought in some new
fitness equipment too!
All of our community centers decked the
halls this month, celebrating the season with
festive decor.
Our after-school programs wrapped up the
year with holiday parties. They celebrated by
watching Polar Express, making Reindeer Rolls
and doing Christmas crafts.
We first started delivering meals to our 50+ program
participants in mid-March and we continued delivering
them twice a week for the rest of the year. We are so
proud to say our staff delivered nearly 35,000 meals
between March and December 2020.
We are continuing meal delivery into 2021.
On the last meal delivery day of 2020, we included
something extra in the participants' meal bags… a small
gift, wishing them a very happy holiday season!
Each participant received a pair of fuzzy socks,
chapstick, lotion and hand sanitizer.
We continued our sponsorship partnership with T-Mobile
this month. The company gave us $12,000.
$8,000 of that covered all fees for every child in
our after-school program for two weeks.
The remaining $4,000 is being put toward our
youth programs.
Here are a few comments from ACE parents when they
found out they didn’t owe any fees for those two weeks:
“What?! That’s wonderful news!
We’re T-Mobile customers so that’s great!”
“Truly a blessing!!!! I’m so thankful.”
“So sweet! Thank you guys!”
Our main Parks Department office
took part in the county-wide
wreath decorating contest and
we won! Our wreath was 7 feet tall
and made from branches and
holly found in our parks.
As an entry fee into the contest,
every department was asked to
collect items to be donated to
those less fortunate in our
community. We contributed over
100 winter hats, adding to the long
list of items that will help the
homeless population in
Spartanburg, all donated by
county employees.
17 Tubes of Toothpaste
43 Toothbrushes
1 Dental Floss
108 Tubes of Chapstick
11 Scarves
116 Stocking Caps
41 Pairs of Winter Gloves
197 Pairs of Socks
36 Bars of Soap
13 Pocket Tissues
10 Bottles of Shampoo
20 Bottles of Conditioner
26 Bottles of Lotion
Bates McKinney, 50+
Senior Recreation Coordi-
nator, took part in the
county-wide Holly Jolly
Scavenger Hunt in
December along the Mary
Black Rail Trail and her
family won the grand prize!
Way to go Bates!
Zack Chastain, Outdoor
Recreation Coordinator,
completed Wilderness First
Aid Training in December.
It’s a 16 hour course,
covering topics ranging
from injury preparation,
prevention, assessment
and treatment.
Brianna Rhodes is a Senior Site
Coordinator at the Woodruff
Leisure Center. She’s been working
part-time with the ACE program for
the last two years. Brianna
graduated from Woodruff High
School and is currently attending
Spartanburg Community College.
We welcomed two new staff members in December.
One was an intern and the other worked for us part-time.
We’re happy to have Brianna Rhodes and Mac Green
on our team full-time!
Mac Green is a Senior Site
Coordinator, splitting his time
between the Chesnee Community
Center and Outdoor Recreation.
He’s from Piedmont and recently
graduated from East Stroudsburg
University in Pennsylvania. He and
his wife now live in Boiling Springs.
