“It’s all about the al-

mighty dollar.” How

often have we heard

or used this expres-

sion to voice our

frustration at mon-

ey’s dominant role in

our lives? Like it or not, money does have an

influence on how we live our lives. The amount

of money we have determines how nice of a

home we own, the car we drive, the things we

enjoy doing in our free time.

The choice is ours. Finances can control us, or

we can control our finances. We can choose to

live below our means as opposed to above our

means in order to have some breathing room in

our finances. When we have financial margin,

room to breathe in our checkbooks, we have

the freedom to give back to God. If God is the

one who gave us the gifts and talents we possess

to earn a living, should we not give back to God

a portion of our financial treasure?

When we have financial margin, we have the op-

portunity to save. Whether we are saving up

money for that much needed family vacation or

for a nice weekend away as a couple, when we

save money we are able to experience and live

life to its full.

God wants us to be happy, to enjoy the life He

has given to us. By living below

our means and having some

“breathing room” in our finances,

we can give first, save second, and

live off the rest.

The Annual Diocesan Appeal begins next weekend. This is

your opportunity to assist the Diocese in its Ministry. You can

assist our parish with your pledge as well. When a parish goes

over its goal, 100% of that overage amount is returned to the

parish for its use. Over $400,000 was refunded from last

year’s Appeal to diocesan parishes.

Come One, Come All to the Noodle Making Ball

We will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Gannon Hall at 9

a.m. We hope to be done by noon; at which time, lunch will

be served. If you have noodle making machines, please bring

them. Everyone interested in making noodles is invited.

Bethlehem Nativity Products Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Bethlehem Nativity Products will be visiting your parish on behalf of the Christian families in Bethlehem. For centuries, the Christian and Catholics in Bethlehem have earned a living by carv-ing olive wood religious art to sell to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pil-grims are visiting journeying to the Holy Land today, making it difficult for Catholic artisans to support their families by the dignified work of Christ’s birth.

During our visit of your parish we will have hand carved Nativities scenes, Orna-ments, Statues, Crosses and much more beautiful olive wood hand carved religious items, please consider purchasing a piece of art from the Holy Land to support your fellow Catholics who choose to stay and protect the Holy sites where Jesus himself lived, your purchase will make a difference in the lives of many Catholic families, Please support this noble cause. www.bethlehemnativity.com . We accept cash, personal checks, all credit cards and monthly installment payments as well, Thanks

for your generosity. Please visit our display Saturday & Sun-

day September 21st & 22nd 2019

Did You Know? A Walk through the Mass

Following the Entrance Antiphon or Opening Hymn that accompanies the entrance

procession, Mass begins with the Sign of the Cross. We begin the Mass and most

of our prayers with the Sign of the Cross to remind us who we are and whose we

are. We are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy

Spirit, as the Holy Trinity begins to live within us. In Baptism, we become adopted

Sons and Daughters of God our Heavenly Father with a birthright to the Kingdom

of God.

Following the Sign of the Cross, the priest greets the congregation with these

words, “The Lord be with you.” The congregation responds, “And with your spir-

it.” This greeting affirms that the Lord is present in the assembly gathered in prayer

and also in the presiding Priest. This greeting finds its origins in New Testament

epistles of St. Paul.

Next, we enter into the Penitential Rite as the Priest says, “Let us first acknowledge

our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries. The Peni-

tential Rite may take three forms. The most common form introduces three stro-

phes with the assembly’s responses, “Lord Have Mercy…Christ Have Mercy…Lord

Have Mercy.” The priest responds, “May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive

us our sins, and bring us to eternal life.” The Penitential Rite is an opportunity for

us to seek forgiveness for our sins and purify our hearts as we enter into the mys-

tery of the Eucharist.

Next Sunday we will take a close look at the Gloria and the Opening Prayer/

Collect.

SAINTS MARY AND MATHIAS SAFETY-September

Saints Mary and Mathias Parish has formed a Safety Committee. The Safety Committee is being aligned with procedures that will ensure the safety of all who attend St. Mathias Church. The Safety Committee has met with Lt. Tony Kies and Officer Whitni Peña of our Muscatine Police Department. SEPTEMBER SAFETY: As we begin Children’s Word at our weekend Masses, our September Safety will begin with: The Chapel Door (at the top of the steps on the Pine Street entrance) will be locked during all of the week-

end Masses. The Sacristy outside door (north side of the church) will be locked during all of the weekend Masses.

Our Sacristans will ensure that these doors are locked. As we continue working with our Safety Committee and our Muscatine Police Department, we will be schedul-ing meetings with all of our Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers, musicians, etc. during the coming months. The Mus-catine Police Department will, also, be providing training for all. Our safety procedures will be put into place in such a way that all of us are aware of the Safety Plan. If you have any questions, ideas, or suggestions, please call Sister Cheryl (263-3848) or email her at [email protected]. Sister Cheryl was asked to be the Chair person for this committee.

LA SANTA MISA DE HOY ES EN MEMORIA DE SALVADOR NAJAR Y MARIA DEL CARMEN

RAMIREZ
