AIR CONDITIONING COLLECTION is taking

place at this time. The parish is

fortunate to have a cool and

Sunday after Sunday and during the

week. However, as you can guess, the

expense for such air conditioning in a large church is

very high. YELLOW air conditioning offering

envelopes are available in the church. Thank you for

your contribution.

Dear Parishioners,

A worthwhile and successful Vacation

Bible School (VBS) was held for one

week from July 9th to July 13th.

Approximately thirty six children participated and

grew in their understanding and love of the Lord in

fun and exciting ways with a special theme:

“SPLASH CANYON: GOD’S PROMISE ON

LIFE’S WILD RIDE.” Aided by adult leaders

including school teachers, catechists and fellow parishioners along with college and high school students the

children enjoyed praying together, watching inspirational videos, making crafts, and having a good time with

outdoor activities and games. Already parents are asking about next summer’s VBS! In the meanwhile

enjoy the following snapshots from this summer.

ARISE: TOGETHER IN CHRIST. Following two

successful years of ARISE this worthwhile

evangelization effort throughout the diocese and in

our parish will resume one last time in October. The

fifth session consists of six weekly gatherings with the

theme, “We Are the Good News.” Once again ARISE

is guaranteed to be a total parish experience to

spiritually renew everyone and provide opportunities

for all of us to grow in faith and community. In

preparation for ARISE this Fall please offer the

ARISE prayer below and prayerfully consider your

involvement as a facilitator or participant on Sign-Up

weekend this Fall.

Gracious God and Father,

we enter into your presence

realizing you know us better than we know ourselves.

You know the cares and sufferings

we carry in our hearts.

You call us to holiness and we trust you to lead us

together

on our journey to be a renewed Church,

for with you all things are possible.

Create us anew in Jesus Christ your Son.

Liberate us from all that keeps us from you.

Heal us from every form of sin and violence.

Transform us to live your Word more profoundly.

Awaken us to the sacred; rebuild trust among us.

Enliven our parishes; reunite our families.

May your Holy Spirit empower us to live

as a community of love,

freed to share in your work of recreating

our world and restoring justice.

We believe you are doing something new,

calling us to arise together in Christ

to celebrate the fullness of life. Amen. © 2007 RENEW International

ACADEMY SUMMER HOURS

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN OLSCA EIGHTH GRADER?

By Brother Michael Renna, OFS—Chairperson

A 10 liter glass aquarium is separated in half by a semi permeable membrane. This membrane only allows the passage of water molecules through it. On the left side of the membrane, a scientist placed 4 liters of a 10% sucrose (sugar) solution*. On the right side, she placed 4 liters of a 20% sucrose solution. Predict what will happen to the level of the solutions on either side of the membrane after 24 hours. Give a rationale for your prediction. *This solution is prepared by dissolving the sucrose in a sufficient amount of water to obtain the desired concentration.

Here is the answer to last week’s problem. Congratulations to everyone who got it correct! Answer: Molecules in nature move as a result of their inherent energy according to the Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT). In general, molecules move randomly but the tendency is to move from areas where they are more highly concentrated to areas where their concentration is less. In this problem, the side of the aquarium with the 10% sucrose solution is 90% water and the side with the 20% sucrose solution is 80% water. Thus the WATER concentration is higher on the left side of the membrane than on the right. Water molecules will move in both directions across the membrane, but the tendency is for MORE water molecules to move from the left side to the right side following their concentration gradient. This process is known as OSMOSIS. Sucrose molecules will not pass through the membrane since it is not permeable to sucrose. Thus, the level of the solution on the right side will increase while the level on the left will decrease. The levels will stop changing when the concentration of water molecules on both sides is equal. At this point, water molecules continue to move as per the KMT, but now the net movement from one side to the other is equal. Osmosis is the major mechanism by which water molecules enter and leave cells through the plasma membrane, whether they be plant root cells or human blood cells.

BACK TO SCHOOL BLESSING. As parents and

children prepare to return to school with uniforms,

school supplies, lunch

boxes, etc. we would like

to begin the new school

year by offering a

blessing for all students,

teachers, classroom aides,

instructors, etc. On

Sunday, September 16th

at the 9:30 AM Mass

school children are

invited to bring to church their school backpacks

filled with their school supplies and a special blessing

will be given to them and others so that the school

year will be successful and the young minds of our

school children will continue to expand in learning

new things.
