VOCATION THOUGHT
The Parish Vocations Committee wishes to thank all for participating in the Year for Vocations, an
initiative of Bishop DiMarzio and the Diocese of Brooklyn. Here are some questions that we may pose
to ourselves as we look back on the year: -- Do I see my life more as a response to a call from God rather than a project that is merely my own? -- Do I routinely pray that all may know more clearly what the Lord is calling them to do in life and be able to courageously answer that call? -- Have I kept an eye out for anyone who may be called to Priesthood or Consecrated Life? If I have noticed someone, have I invited them to consider this special call, or perhaps let a priest know about the person?

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN OLSCA EIGHTH GRADER?
By Brother Michael Renna, OFS—Chairperson
Father McBrien is shopping for a new shirt. He finds one on sale at Kohl’s for $33 at a discount of 45% off the regular price. What was the original price of the shirt? How much did Father McBrien save? ONLY AN ALGEBRAIC SOLUTION WILL BE ACCEPTED!
This problem can be solved in two different ways. Method 1: The percent discount is equal to the difference between the original price and the sale price divided by the original price. If we let x = the original price, our equation becomes:
.45 = x –33 (note we must convert 45% to its x decimal equivalent .45)
We now cross multiply to solve for x: .45x = x –33
Collect like terms on each side of the equation: -.55x = -33
Divide -33 by -.55 and the answer we get is $60, the original price of the shirt.
Method 2: If we let x represent the original price, we can then reduce this amount by 45% of the original price and set the equation equal to $33 as follows:
x - .45x = 33 (note again we must convert 45% to .45)
Solving for x gives us the following equation: .55x = 33
We now divide 33 by .55 and get our answer $60, the original price of the shirt. So, Father saved $27 on the shirt. What a deal!!!
