The term speckle refers to a random granular pattern which is observed when a highly coherent light

beam is diffusely reflected at a surface with a rough structure such as a display screen or a metallic

surface. This phenomenon arises from the interference of different reflected portions of the incident

beam with random relative optical phases. The properties of the speckle pattern depend upon the

conditions such as the illuminated spot or the direction of the incident beam, even the minor changes in

the conditions can change the properties of the speckle pattern. This phenomenon has been investigated

by scientists since the time of Newton, but speckles have come into prominence since the invention of

The speckle pattern shown in above picture is formed when the laser light is projected on a screen from

a cleaved end of multimode fiber. Light propagating in many different fiber modes interfere with each

other and produces a random interference pattern. The pattern is extremely sensitive to any influence to

the fiber — vibration, a lightest touch, heat from the hand held over the fiber. One can use this effect in

making the fiber optic sensors and even for a guard system.

EDFA Block Pump Control

Rotating the knob clockwise, increases the output power of 980nm Pump Laser. It is combined with a digital control for 980nm laser power which is in software. Optical power coming out of laser will be varied only by one of the controls (digital or manual) at a time depending on their relative strengths.

LIGHT RUNNER installation has been done successfully at ECE department of Malaviya National Institute Of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur on 8th January 2013 & at ECE department of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Allahabad on 11th January 2013.

I am quite happy to see a standalone solution to fiber optic communication labs. The kit has been designed to provide exposure to advanced optical communication experiments such as those based on WDM, OADM, EDFA etc, and is capable of providing many more experiments over and above the 16 experiments claimed. More so, it does not require any external instruments and such as oscilloscope, couplers, power meter, etc. It is quite user friendly and comprehensive laboratory.
