FLOYDFEST 19Voyage HomeThere is a mo-ment in life where we must ask ourselves: what kind of person do I wish to be?

Unconscious competence. What is it? And where does it come from? I have been witness to sea monsters and sirens enough to place my mind in a vice and twist my soul until it fissures; and then, and then I rip my heart like a treasure from my chest, to give to you my very best.

My granny came to me when I needed her most, and said: ”Boy, this is all but a muse. Theater if you will. Your only purpose here is take all that you experience and allow it to open your heart so that you can give *this* to the world. Do this and your jour-ney is found.” Yes!! Those whom have not yet found this sacred treasure within their very own chests are the very people left wanting, searching, incomplete. Ace in the ‘whole,’ any-one? Of course! We are all born with a treasure in our chest—the holiest of grails. When we tap into this eternal force called love, we seem to find that space, that moment. Have you ever noticed the difference between want-ing something, outside of ourselves, and giving away what you already have? Talk about freedom. Give me some of that!

Have you ever heard of Ernest Shackleton? He sought out glory but instead found himself beholden to his brothers. Sincerely condoning himself to the stewardship of his mates, and their forsaken expedition, he left behind an undiscovered Antarctica. And, instead, found himself in un-charted territory, confronted with un-imaginable terror against all odds. He chose the path of humanity and dug deep to ensure the safe passage of his crew. He summoned something—and succeeded—in finding—something. Something more than himself. And in doing so, found … himself.

What about Rachel Carson? She was born poor, into a loving family, who cared deeply. She surmounted

extreme health crises and found solace in the wonder that is the world’s intercon-nected ecosystem, writing with elegance and poetry, the magic that is the sea. She understood that there is truly something—something greater than

herself—in the ocean and its inhabit-ants that give so much in the pursuit of being one with nature.

Humility. Can it be found without being seen? Without being heard? Yes, it’s in the blade of grass which holds the wonder of —nothing — of everything.

I wanna scream; I wanna cry; I wanna run and hide! Can’t you see? Love has already won the war! Haha! My body and soul know no other choice but to accept this love, entrust-ing it to be experienced and shared.

Action. The choice is yours — regardless. As Sailor Jerry once said: “I let my work speak for itself.”

And just like the infamous Grateful Dead lyric goes: “Without Love in the Dream, it’ll never come True.”

We welcome the collective ‘you’. All who have decided to celebrate despite themselves. Despite the world in all of its turbulence. In all of its wonder, learning — how to be — something — nothing. How to be — everything.

Feet on the ground is where I’ll be found. Thank you, Oz. Thank you, Dorothy. Click your heels, for there is no place like home.

Love, FAMILY is why we’re here. Don’t let ‘em fool ya.

We hope that you find your heart this weekend and dare to share it with yourself. And then, with others, for home truly *is* where the heart is. This is *our* moment.

Welcome home. Welcome to the Shire. Find your Gnosis.

Dance, dance, dance. Give it away, give it away, give it away … now.

    With so much love,

    ~Kris HodgesFounder & Chief Creative

In 1983, I entered a parking lot at the Richmond Coliseum and felt something brand new and totally familiar all at once. It was Grateful Dead fall tour. Even though I had never been to a Grateful Dead show, I felt like I was home. I found a place where I belonged. I followed that tribe around the country for many shows and years and found a like-minded community that spi-derwebbed nicely into my life — a life of playing, performing, teaching and producing music. As music lov-ers, we have been blessed with a wonderful ex-ample to follow and cultivate. The inspirational ‘ripples’ alone have created tidal waves in all areas of the music world.

These far-reach-ing effects include everything from taking many of the technical stage aspects of music production to new heights to engaging an audience at a multi-day event, making all feel like valued members of the community. I sometimes wonder where I’d be had I not found this wonderful tribe of kindred spirits over three decades ago.

Just like in the fall of 1983, the first time I walked the rustic lanes and fields at FloydFest, witnessing the joys that such musical convergences can bring, I again felt like I was ‘home.’ Over the years, I have heard friends and patrons’ alike comment senti-mentally about our summer moun-tain home-away-from-home and the homecoming we enjoy sharing every July.

I have had the pleasure of seeing this event from many vantage points. First, as a patron enjoying a vast range of beautiful music and crafts and feel-

ing like a valued member of the scene. Secondly, as a stage manager working many hours in the rain and elements, bringing a show to patrons who are just as invested in the experience. As a performer, I continue to give every ounce of passion to the set because playing on this mountain top is not only an honor and privilege, but it has also given me some of the greatest highlights of my musical career.

Next, I experienced FloydFest as an event production manager who saw an event that truly caters to a wide

cross-section of our society and brings them together for a few days, allowing their most press-ing problem to be which band to check out next. I personally know how hard of a decision this can be, especially made within a small group of friends. Finally, as

an eventual part owner of FloydFest, I see what this event means within the construct of the larger community.

This festival is an opportunity to bring us all together. The number of people who connect with this event every year is awe-inspiring and some-thing to be revered and continually cultivated. FloydFest has been a labor of love for me for close to 20 years, and I am honored to continue to be a part of a team that shows how, with love and a dream, anything is possible.

This year, I hope our festival gives you that feeling of ‘home’ and look forward to many more voyages back in the years to come.

Surprisingly, we first met Dancin’ Dave’ Versch in a campground — at Merlefest in the 90s. He was an iconic fixture at festivals and shows for de-cades. Spotting his one-of-a-kind, off-white beach hat was easy with his height and it guaranteed his smiling face and a giant hug were soon to follow. Energy and enthusiasm seemed to radiate from him; friends basked in it and strangers were naturally drawn to it. We were blessed in his presence and lucky to call him friend for more than 20 years, which still feels like it just wasn’t long enough.

As one of the first ticket-holders to the first FloydFest, Dave arrived on the scene with a chainsaw in tow. Without hesitation, he began clearing out what we now know as Woodsy Camping—also the original location of Dancin’ Dave’s Festival Camping. (He pioneered ‘glamping’ before we even had a name for it.) Dave never shied away from a hard day of work nor an extended evening of living up to his moniker; he was blissful in the company of dancing

bodies, live music, and lifelong friends. I don’t know that we will ever stop looking for his hat bobbing through

the crowd at a festival, but I do know that no matter where we are dancing, he will be there with a creamy dark, too. Cheers, Dave!

Nine years ago, oblivious to fate’s path, Rio Semione and I became fast friends. Granted, she frustrated me equally as much as I an-noyed her, as is often the case with two headstrong personalities. Humor was an immediate staple of our relationship, and we elevated laughing at each other to an expert level. She (we) had no way of knowing that, by allowing me a front-row seat to her craft — a nuanced dance of both brash and subtle steps — that she would be, inadvertently, passing me her torch a short, three years later.

In her wake was a legacy spanning more than a decade of exceptional artist relations and huge footprints left to fill. Rio was a marvel of sorts, bridging the gaps between art and artist, music and musi-cian. She knew the intense extremes of love and despair, feeling it all to her core. Every day, she navigated inescap-able vulnerability, the price of which was rewarded with an ability to experience child-like wonderment, even as an adult. Rio called many places ‘home’ in her 60 years, including the open highway with only an out-stuck thumb for a map. In the end, she purposely grew her roots deep into the very soil we dance upon this week. Noth-ing would make her happier than our collective ‘Voyage

Home,’ and when I imagine what she’d say about a giant wooden ship in the middle of the main field with her name on it, I can feel her laugh-

ing beside me again. ~Kellee Barbour

Sometimes, on the Dreaming Creek Main Stage at FloydFest, things quiet down a little bit and a particular

singer will raise their voice and it truly rings out across those strong mountains. And suddenly you’re standing in the

middle of the most pure thing there could ever be. Thanks Doc, and so many others.

Thank God and Goddess, brothers and sisters, for the Music!!

  • There are people who work specific music fes-tivals with such regularity, that they become part of the ‘fabric’ of those events. Our friend, Russ Helgren, was undoubtedly part of the fabric of FloydFest, and his presence was distinct. Russ has been on the mountain with us for the latter part of July since our inception. Ad-ditionally, he was — is — a forefather of the tight-knit group of FloydFest staff photographers. Not only was Russ a noted and respected photographer in the music world, but he also made a name for himself as a talented and successful tie-dye artist and vendor.

Dividing his time between the geographies that pulled his soul, Russ lived both on the Virginia coastline and in the Blue Ridge Mountains around Floyd. At FloydFest, we knew Russ best as the kind soul behind the lens. The body of work he left us all with is extraordinary; it is his legacy. Of course, we weren’t surprised to find very few photos of Russ. More often than not, he was tirelessly shooting away to capture your happiness, your friends

and family, your indelible musical moments, and our shared history on a magical moun-tain. He will ALWAYS be with us on this

mountain. Thank you, Russ — we love you so very much.

FloydFest Green Panels & Jams with Anne Bedarf, of Bring It!

With an eye toward finding common ground in a solutions-based discussion, we love to talk about big things that matter: the environment, realistic sustainability, the health of the planet, and local-to-global initiatives. The history of this movement, like all worthwhile change, has been glacially slow and fraught with potholes and band-aids. Touching on ‘how we got to now,’ all Green Panels & Jams bring current environmental issues to the table to be sorted, dissected, and repurposed into plans for forward-momentum. No matter who takes a seat on the stage at one of these sessions, audience members are sure to be engaged & entertained, and (hopefully) walk away with a little more education and enlightenment.

    • Green Panel & Jam, featuring TBD Thu. 2:45-3:45pm, Ferrum College Workshop PorchSeasoned ‘FloydFestarians’ will testify to the off-the-beaten-path joy that comes with attending one of our environmental discussion sessions known as “Green Panel & Jam.” Everyone from headliners and partners to movers and shakers in the festival world have joined in to talk about the state of this uniquely inhabited rock orbiting the sun. Check the official FloydFest app &/or social media for announcements about who will join Anne for this session. Trust us — you’ll want to be there.

    • Green Panel & Jam, featuring Acoustic Syndicate Fri. 11:30am-12:30pm, Devils Backbone Throwdown TentJoin Acoustic Syndicate for a special roundtable of music and discussion about

the current state of farming in America, including their unique take on the intersection of farming, community, and entertainment. Acoustic Syndicate is a band whose authentic music is rooted in the earth and connected to the greater community. They are sixth-generation farmers from Cleveland County, NC, and have been a familial music collective for more than 25 years.

    • Green Panel: Environmental Creativity for Young PeopleFri. 4:30-5:15pm, Forever Young Stage in Children’s UniverseLet’s talk about the future of the environment and what can be done to save the planet. Is it hot in here? Join us for an uplifting discussion with some longtime & lifetime FloydFest ‘kids’ to get their perspective on the efforts of previous generations and a vision for the future of environmentalism, from ‘zero waste’ to changes in recycling to alternative energy sources.

    • Green Panel & Jam, featuring TBD Sat. 11:45am-12:45pm, Devils Backbone Throwdown TentYou never know who will turn up at one of our long-running, environmental sessions known as “Green Panel & Jam.” Check the official FloydFest app &/or social media for announcements about who will join Anne for this session. I’d bet you my last compostable apple peel, though, that it will be someone good and the conversation will be well worth the walk.

    • Green Panel & Jam, featuring Lukas Nelson and VA CultivarsSun. 2:00-3:00pm, Devils Backbone Throwdown TentHave you seen/heard Lukas Nelson’s “Turn Off the News & Grow a Garden” campaign? (If no, check it out ASAP! Trust us on this.) We couldn’t think of anyone better to join Lukas in a return appearance at one of our Green Panel & Jam sessions than plant gurus, VA Cultivars, who have been growing their gardens and name as the hemp trade comes back to Virginia. Sit in on a discussion between Lukas, founding members of VA Cultivars, and Anne Bedarf, our Bring It! Recycling Ambassador, to see what topics sprout up.

FloydFest 19~Voyage Home Teen SceneTeens: We want/need you to contribute your energy and perspective to this

festival! We are engaging teens as roaming agents to experience and contribute to

programming across the entire festival. This year we are inviting teens to explore, to discover — and then document — parts of the festival that they may not be aware of. We hope teens will participate in more of the festival offerings — especially via Outdoor Adventure — and then document their experiences on social media platforms. We will reward them for their posts with opportunities to earn/win food vouchers and festival merchandise. It’s almost like a social-media scavenger hunt

through the festival and its offerings. Teens who post (3) POSITIVE & CREATIVE social media posts (on Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter) during the festival tagging @floydfest_teens and using the hashtag #floydfestteenscene will receive (1) food vendor voucher. Each teen is eligible for (1) food voucher, over the course of the whole fest (not by day). We will share the best posts on our main FF social accounts AND the post with the most “likes” on each of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to the Merch Tent.

To enter to win teens must also follow floydfest_teens Instagram and allow floydfest_teens to follow you back. Facebook posts and Twitter posts must be public. This is to ensure we see your post!! Program is limited to kids aged 12 to 18 years old. There is no limit on how many teens can participate — the more the merrier.

Teens wishing to participate can meet with coordinator Joe Klein and volunteer Deanna Bailey daily, at the ENO Outdoor Adventure Headquarters — look for the Teen Scene tent with iPad kiosks.

‘FloydFest For First Responders’On the heels of 2018’s successful ‘FloydFest for Faculty’ program, FloydFest and

Across-the-Way Productions devised and implemented a new initiative in 2019 to reward first responders — firefighters, police officers, sheriffs, paramedics, EMTs — for the important work they do every day in our local communities: ‘FloydFest For First Responders.’ Knowing that each first responder deserves a well-earned respite enjoying some music, magic, mountains, and community, AtWP/FloydFest offered every full-time, part-time, or volunteer first responder in the counties of Floyd, Patrick, Franklin, Carroll, Montgomery, and Roanoke, and the cities of Roanoke and Salem, the opportunity to receive (1) free Single-Day, Any-Day GA ticket to FloydFest 19~Voyage Home.

We are proud to report that this initiative was met with a robust reply, and this year’s FloydFest audiences will be dotted with many of our area’s finest first responders.

We also asked first responders to decorate their submission letters, and — wow — do we have some wild artistic talent in SWVA! To honor the art — and to say ‘thank you’ one more time to our beloved first responders — we have created a display in our Main Field featuring the decorated submission letters … check it out!

Thank you, first responders! FloydFest loves you!

The Buffalo Mountain Jam returns for its fourth eXperience at FloydFest 19~Voyage Home!

Conceived mid-festival in 2016 in the wake of Gregg Allman’s failing health and subsequent show cancellation, FloydFest’s signature Buffalo Mountain Jam was devised to celebrate the talent and legacy of The Allman Brothers Band, and now annually features impromptu artist collaborations, super jams and special guests.

The unforgettable magic that was FloydFest 16’s (Dreamweavin’), FloydFest 17’s (Freedom) and FloydFest 18’s (Wild), Buffalo Mountain Jam returns in 2019 for its fourth-annual installment, captained by Keller Williams, Leftover Salmon, Trout Steak Revival, Erin Lunsford, Caitlin Krisko, Kyle Travers, Kris Hodges, Steve ‘Big Daddy’ McMurry, and other special guests.

Little compares to the music and magic that is created within the Buffalo Mountain Jam framework; don’t miss the surprises in store for its fourth-annual installment.

For five glorious days each July, this quiet 80-acre plateau off the magnificent Blue Ridge Parkway is transformed into a sanctuary for music and outdoor-adventure aficionados. In addition to the food, shopping, and entertainment ameni-ties, our FloydFest ‘tent city’ comes complete with recycling and trash collection, sanitation and zoning issues, medical assistance, neighbor-hood security, and plain neighborly common-sense. Please take a mo-ment to read through this campus overview; being a well-informed citizen helps to minimize potential problems and maximize your experi-ence!

The Ps: PROTOCOL: Our “rules” are few,

but we take them seriously. We have a no-tolerance drug policy. Those with drugs will be escorted out. Alcohol must be consumed inside our ABC-controlled venue, and no outside alcohol is allowed inside the gates. No weapons, glass, or dogs are allowed inside the venue. Lost children should be taken to the Children’s Universe and left with the staff member in charge. Lost parents should check in at our onsite FloydFest HQ, located in the middle of the site. Trash, Recy-cling and Compost FAQs have a dedi-cated page in the program — please review what goes where (if you’re unsure, ask!) and help keep the scene clean. Our green is all of our gold!

POP-UPS: We strive to be fair in our policy regarding what sun-shielding set-ups are allowed on our main viewing fields; respecting both the viewshed and the need for respite from the sun. No pop-up tents or flags/totems are allowed on the Main Field areas; there are defined areas to the left and right of the Dreaming Creek Main Stage where pop-ups (if and as needed by children, the elderly, or those with medical conditions) may be erected. From the soundboard back, sun umbrellas, camp chairs with

built-in shade awnings, and other sun-blocking apparatus that do not obstruct the view of other festivalgo-ers are allowed.

POLICE AND MEDICAL: We have trained, ‘round-the-clock Festival Security working to protect and serve the family-friendly environment that FloydFest is known for, by enforc-ing the above protocol. If you spot a security breech, or need any sort of assistance in this realm, please ap-proach a staff member with a radio. We employ off-duty Patrick County Police Officers (and other law enforce-ment and security teams) to aid with the potential escalation of any issues; an officer can be found between 11 a.m. and 2 a.m. at the entrance to the main beer and wine garden. Profes-sional medical assistance is available at the ‘Medical Tent’ located next to the FloydFest General Store in the main field parking area.

PORTOPOTTIES: These are located along the periphery of the ser-vice road, accessible to camping areas, as well as in less-conspicuous areas of our main field, in the Children’s Universe, The Village, outside our main gate, and in all parking areas. We use glow sticks to light them after dark, and strive to keep them clean during the day. If there are overt issues in any of our units, please report it to administrative personnel (in our HQ office, located between the main beer

and wine garden and the food court) and we will work to quickly remedy the situation.

POTABLE WATER: Potable water is located in large tanks — one at the top of The Village, and another along the service road on the ‘not-so-quiet’ camping side. Help yourself to water for cleaning dishes, brushing teeth, etc. Delicious mountain drinking water is located in two places on the main field — near the Food Court and near the Deschutes Brewery Libations tent, and is available for free (bring your container, or purchase one onsite). Warm-water showers are located along the main path to The Village — and don’t bother with soap; it’s provided!

PLEASE MAKE SPACE: Small is beautiful! While we work annually to clear dead trees, limbs and brush to expand camping areas, space is ulti-mately limited and it can be challeng-ing to find a ready campsite, especially if you are late to the party! Towards the goal of everyone having a small footprint of space to call ‘home’ while they’re here, we ask that you contain your set-up within the 15’ x 15’ space allotted with a Tent Tag; please limit the sprawl of additional canopies, tarps, kitchenettes, etc. Additionally, keep walkways through campsites clear for a safe return to camp, and

explore our outer boundaries — ‘Ex-treme Camping’ is a mildly adventur-ous trek past ‘Quiet Camping’ through the woods and down a hill ... follow the trail signs … there are big trees, a view, and space galore!

The Qs: ‘QUEUE UP’ FOR SHUTTLES!

Our main offsite parking area is the Alpha Lot. Our offsite campground is the Delta Lot. Make sure you board a shuttle that is bound for your destina-tion. Shuttles begin at 1 p.m. Wednes-day, July 24, 2019, then at 9 a.m. daily Thursday through Sunday, and run through 2 a.m. nightly (additional, smaller shuttle service is provided between 2 and 8 a.m.), and a three-hour window from 9 a.m. to noon for departing campers on Monday.

QUIET (AND NOT-SO-QUIET) CAMPING: Please note the designa-tion of the area you are camped in, and be considerate of the many chil-dren, and earlier bedtimes of campers in ‘Family Camping’ areas.

QUARTS AND PINTS (ABC): The origin of the phrase “mind your Ps and Qs,” refers to Old-English barkeeps shouting at rowdy customers to mind their Pints and Quarts — in other words to moderate their intake and keep themselves in check! Please enjoy responsibly. To partake in our variety of craft beers, ciders, and Vir-ginia wines, you must first purchase tickets from booths stationed outside the ABC areas. Beer, cider and wine tickets are $7 each, for 16oz beers and 8oz wine servings. In our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, we minimize plastics by only serving drinks in stainless steel cups. Purchase

the latest commemorative version, or reuse your cup from a prior year!

QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. If there is anything we can do to improve your festival experience, we want to know about it! Either tell a staff member personally, email [email protected] or [email protected], or give us a shout at (888) VA-FESTS.

QUESTIONS? or issues not cov-ered here we will happily address in person at our onsite administrative of-fices — our Admin Building, located between the Pink Floyd Beer & Wine Garden and the food court.

Welcome to the family! We love ya!
