Sunday 8th April brought persistent rain and the opportunity for The Stones Ladies to play on their home pitch

for the first time this year. The Ladies were looking for revenge over their opponents having been beaten by them 3 - 0 away in their previous match.

Manager Gary Harling was able to put out a strong side with Laura Kaminski making her debut in midfield. The Ladies made a strong start with some good attacking play and managed to make sure most of the game was being played in the opposition half. The opening goal for The Stones came when Amy Murphy picked up the ball outside the box and fired it over their keeper into the top corner. The Stones continued to dominate, with our defence comfortably dealing with the few opposition attacks, and didn’t take long to double the lead through Rosie Watts with almost a replica of the first goal. More chances fell to Catia who hit the crossbar, Laura, Rosie and Storm had shots

saved. Half time 2 - 0.The manager gave his half time team talk

and sent the team out to “get the next goal and then the other team’s heads will drop”. It didn’t take long for the next goal but it wasn’t from The Stones. A through ball found the opposition striker through on goal and she slotted it past Courtney into the far corner. Fortunately the Ladies didn’t let that set back upset their rhythm and continued to create chances of their own. Our third goal came through a flowing passing move which eventually found Harlee with the ball on the left side of the opposition penalty area from where she curled the ball in with her right foot. The final goal arrived when Storm was played through and rounded the keeper before tapping in to complete a fine Stones performance and a valuable three points.

Full time 4 - 1 to The Stones Ladies. Player of the match Laura Kaminski.

the 1973 FA cup final and seeing Bob Stokoe jumping around at the final whistle. And most memorable Weald-stone game, and moment? Plenty to choose from, the pick has to be v Stafford Rangers March 1988. Never seen so much water on a pitch. 2-0 down at half time and being overrun, supporters were fearing a repeat of the 0 - 6 drubbing handed out by Barnet 10 days earlier. Cue half time substitute Samson Olaleye. A carthorse of a player if ever there was one but always gave his all. Three balls lobbed over the top, each one stick-ing to the mud-pie surface and belted in by Sammy. Won 4-2!CONTINUED OVERPAGE

‘I had no interest in football until I happened to rent a flat behind the Elmslie End. I came to a game and that was it.. I was hooked!’

Any disadvan-tages? None.

How do you fit watching football,

and Wealdstone, into your family/working life? My boys, Leo and Lucas, are also Stones followers so match days are sort of family days out.How big a part of your life is the game? I’d say quite signifi-cant as, if like many supporters, you were to add up the time spent on matchdays, looking at the forums / internet and general football chat at home and work, it amounts to a large part of any free time. Most memorable game/s you’ve EVER seen? Difficult one this. As a teenager probably

Whereabouts do you live? In Luton, since 1989.Are you working (and where?) I work full time in an office in Luton Town centre.First Stones game at-tended? 28th December 1987 v Boston United in the Conference. What or who persuaded you to become a Stones fan? I’d never shown much interest in football, but by chance I rented a first floor flat in Hamilton Road overlooking Lower Mead from the Elmslie End on the ground. I watched a few games from the kitchen window before deciding to pay my £3.50. Got hooked.Do you follow any other team? Not football - but I support Rye House Rockets (Speedway pre-miership) from April to October.Do you prefer lower-League football? Definitely, changing ends and standing a must.

It’sDavid Werin

in a nice seaside town. Great celebrations at the end with a debut rendition of “We are the Stones”Best stadium you’ve EVER visited? The Suncorp in Bris-bane, escalators and padded seats!Where do you like to stand (or sit) at the Vale? Couch Corner and at the back of the BullaWhat are your expectations for the Stones for this sea-son? I was expecting a top 7 fin-ish so somewhat disappointed. How does the current pro-gramme compare with others you see? At our level it’s the best, and has been since it was 50p.What has been the most read-able/least readable Fan in the Stand so far? Everyone has a story to tell and most are inter-esting. Least readable - without question this one. If you’ve read this far serious questions need to be asked. Either that or the game is not up to much. What do you think of the Stones online presence (videos, twitter, facebook etc)? You are asking the wrong person, I struggle with all things computing and mobile comms! What’s your Wealdstone claim to fame, or interesting fact?

I Don’t have any famous Stones connection. I did

once lined up against Sebastian Coe in a mile race. And finally....Where do you think the club will be in five years? Physically, still at the Vale. Playing wise, hopefully at least in the National South playoffs but ideally at level five.

remember too much about

his defending abilities but scored

a fair few penalties and freekicks. Chris Walton – Classy and cool headed. Glen Little – Made things happen and brought team mates into the game. Always in space with time to pick the pass.Tony Lynch – Always beat his man and quick over 3 yards (at most). Got crosses into the box. Scored goals from impossible positions / angles but could never seem to score the simple ones? Steve Brown – classy and unassuming, scored some nice goals too. Alan Cordice – only saw him in his second spell with the Stones so can only imagine his early 80’s performances. Subtle player with exemplary behaviour on the pitch. Jermaine Beckford – great ability and speed.Who’s your favourite all-time Wealdstone player? I don’t do favourites. So long as a player puts in the effort & does their best.Best away trips to watch foot-ball? Anywhere on the coast at the start or end of the season. Torquay away opening day of next season please. What was your highlight of last season? Southport – very open game in a decent stadium

OLE, OLE OLE OLE Samson Olaleye (on the ground) hooks the ball into the net at the Elmslie End in 1988 against Fareham. Another of David’s favouritesAlan Risk watches the ball go in

Many memorable moments, possibly the pick would be Ev La Ronde’s last minute winner in the Trophy at Bromley.Have you ever played the game yourself and most memorable moments? No, never, I was brought up playing Rugby in Wales and continued playing as an adult in Australia. I would have been a lousy footballer.Any suggestions to improve your Stones - watching experi-ence at the Vale? There’s been great improvements with the new stands at both ends of the Vale. Would be nice if the Wells stand was replaced with something in keeping with our aspirations with provision for wheelchair access and viewing.Favourite current Wealdstone line-up? North; Right back? …mmm? Oshodi; Wilson; Okimo; Green; Cox; Sellers; Monakana; Pratt; Bubb.Favourite all-time Stones line-up? Darren Williams – great stopper and commanded his area. Marvin McCoy – very quick and saved us with some last ditch tackles on many occasions.Paul Bowgett – Proper centre half. Alan Risk – as above – reliable. Mark Harrison – can’t

My wife and I have very different approaches to curry. She’ll spoon her

Pilau, Jalfrezi, Bombay Aloo and Sag Paneer onto a plate and then spend the next five minutes mixing these colour-ful components into a single, uniform curry experience. I, by contrast, will afford these food-stuffs the individual respect they so clearly deserve by giving them their own exclu-sive dish-space. Thus I get to choose from any of umpteen different taste and texture combinations with each visit to the plate rather than the same mono-textured mouthful. But hey, each to their own.

Wait, please don’t turn the page just yet! Let me quickly tie the above to a footballing theme - specifically, how our enjoyment of the beautiful

game can be so significantly affected by the stadium in which we experience it.

My premise is that it doesn’t matter how grand the view, how plush the seat or how de-lightful the pre and post match experience is if you’re forced to watch the match in a bland and featureless stadium. When your ground is one that suffers from a fixed architectural style from stand to humdrum stand then yours will forever be a tarnished football experience no matter how fantastic the fare on the field.

There’s naan so blind…Yes, you say - but why the curry? Because visual variety is the spice of footballing life. As the architect Sir Terry Far-rell says, the best and most satisfying built environments

are often not the most pains-takingly planned, but those that organically coalesce into a vibrant whole. Look at all the elements that combine to make up The Vale! It’s a magnificent menu of the architecturally mundane - but the end result is a veritable feast of contrasts. Just as the Bombay Aloo complements the Chicken Shaslik next to it, so too does the bulk shipping container housing our WFC megastore sit in gloriously unlikely repose aside the social club stand. Just as the golden hue of a Tarka Dall emphasises the deep green of a neighbouring Sag Paneer, so the Gun Turret helps pick out the character-ful cosiness of Couch Corner. We’ve none of yer serried rows of bore-fest bucket seats here, God no - and we’re much the better off because of it.

Aloo are ya?You can blame the new Tot-tenham ground for my thinking on this. I’ve followed that project pretty closely, the result of one part personal and two parts professional interest. Doubtless Chelsea fans, set to experience their own total stadium do-over in a year or two’s time, are also intrigued at what’s going on.

And, to be clear, it looks

Food for thought: the magnificent messiness of our home, The Vale

The column for Wealdstone fans to air their views on the wonderful world of football. (Email us to have your say.)

WORLD of BALL

A curry

great. I’m impressed by the single tier bank of 17,000 fans, that fans will be seated closer to the action than anywhere else, and that the stadium has been designed to with acoustic properties that will ensure the best of atmospheres. If at all possible I’ll go to check it out. But therein lies the point - I’ll almost certainly go just the once, then likely never again. (Unless, you know, FA Cup 3rd Round Proper…)

It was the same with The Emirates. I watched it go up with interest, went when it opened, and I enjoyed my visit. But I couldn’t imagine anything more stultifying than paying to sit in the same seat, in that same stadium, week in and week out. That goes for literally anywhere: Wembley, the Es-tadio de Luz, Celtic Park, you name it. The very thought of watching from the same place, game after game, is more prison sentence than premier entertainment for me.

Paneer we goAfter our Trophy semi here a few weeks back, someone tweeted about the gloriously

ramshackle nature of Grosve-nor Vale. Something along the lines of a football ground not having to be an architectural tour de force for it to do its job. I’d go further: The more lived-in, unpredictable and ungainly the stadium the better.

Sure, good sight lines are crucial. And all grounds should be designed for sensible en-trance and exit. But the ability to choose entirely different match day experiences just by moving another fifty metres along the terrace is literally game-changing. St.Albans City used to be That Club With The Tree On Its Terrace. The tree’s long gone, but it seems they’ve been seduced into a project that will yield the non-league equivalent of an Emirates with three identi-stands and one slightly larger one. Good luck with that, Saints - but I’ll take the steady accretion of things-that-don’t-look-like-they-should-be-next-to-other-things any day of the week.

Korma have a goSteve Foster’s photos offer further evidence of why this variety matters. The quality of

his home game pictures isn’t just down to the man’s mastery of the lens; it’s helped by the constant changes in scenery offered up by the Vale’s in-numerable backdrops. From Bulla to main stand, gun turret to dead fox corner, it’s change after change as the action ad-vances up and down the pitch. Hell, we’re even lucky enough to have two entirely different away stands at the same end.

I know that much of what we have here at The Vale would prove impractical to maintain at even a single tier further up the football pyramid. I know, too, that the club is rightly ambi-tious for the future. All I ask is that anything we do eventually build, however impressive it might finally be, looks just as jarringly out of place against whatever it’s next to as every-thing else.

Viva ramshackle! Forza higgledy-piggledy! Judge us not by our uniformly coloured seats but by the content of our stadium’s character. Long live our home, the marvellously messy Vale and all who enter it! Oh yes, and finally - see you next season.
