WANGARATTA Cycling Club has commenced the track racing season with 25 junior, senior and novice riders enjoying the show-grounds track racing activities.

Club officials welcomed nine new junior novice cyclists, 12 existing juniors and seven senior riders to last Friday night’s track racing.

Under ideal cycling conditions, the new novice cyclists were giv-en the appropriate introductions to track racing after which they were only too pleased to get on their bikes and show their cycling abilities.

After racing, all cyclists and their family members enjoyed the evening barbecue, which is always a great attraction for the compet-ing riders after expending their energy on the track.

The club also encourages new senior members as well as junior novices to come and try track racing.

Track racing provides a safer environment to learn competitive cycling rather than on public roads.

Wangaratta Cycling Club track racing at the showgrounds is each Friday evening at 6pm for both juniors and seniors.

Mondays are allocated for track race training for juniors at 4pm, with seniors training at 5pm on Wednesdays.

ON THE BEND: Kermesse riders are led into a corner by Michael Trnka followed by Tony Reeckman, Jim Samon, Fergus Samon and Ted Alexander.

Club welcomes new track riders

Contact Dean McDonald on 0427 121 080 or Jeff Little on 0419 241 259 for further information.

Last Saturday’s club road race was the individual time trial and a kermesse in which a large group of local and visiting cyclists attended.

The club also welcomed two riders from the North Brisbane Hamilton Wheels Cycling Club.

The kermesse resembles a larg-er racing circuit than for a criteri-um, in this case the Reiths Road, Colson Drive, Warby Range Road and Shanley Street circuit, which is around 6km long.

The top three in the ITT were Tomarsh Loki (Wang) first (27:47) followed closely by Tully Lyster (Wang) second (27:57) and Tony Reeckman (Wang) third (30:18).

Podium places in the kermesse went to Michael Trnka (Alpine) in first place, second to Jim Samon (Wang) and third to Ted Alexander (North Brisbane).

The club expresses its thanks to those members who assisted with organising and marshalling these events.

The next road race will be the Club Mini Tour on November

9-10, which will include the Glen-rowan/Taminck Gap road race, a time trial and hill climb.

For further details, visit www.wangarattacyclingclub.com.au or contact Steve Field on 0447 274 944.

As the airport criterium racing each Tuesday evening at 6pm is growing in popularity, all riders with a Cycling Australia licence or an MTBA licence are encour-aged to come and try this new race circuit.

Departing from Violet Town, the riders travelled through undu-lating terrain to Boho South and on to Strathbogie then towards Euroa before returning to Violet Town.

The less adventurous riders chose an easier 50km route travel-ling the rail trail to Bowser and Londrigan Station then on through Tarrawingee to Milawa for a morning break.

Ann McDonald extended her ride through Everton Station where she managed to attach herself to a group of hard-riding lo-cal cyclists.
