In 1776, there was this man named Adam Smith who wrote a treatise
entitled “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of
Nations.” Cited as the “Father of Modern Economics”, Smith ushered an
era ultimately leading to the development of modern economics and
free markets, coming from a reflection of what was going on during the
Industrial Revolution. With his concepts such as the “invisible hand”,
“political economy”, and what would become classical economics, Wealth
of Nations as Smith’s magnum opus revolutionized the way people saw
society—and the way we buy, sell and what really happens in the process.
So, what have all of these got to do with the Ateneo Youth Economics
Summit 2013? Apart from the economics reference, honestly, everything is
just a pun. But for us, it’s more than that. We believe that today, the same
title applies to our generation: the youth. We believe that the youth is the
wealth of nations: and with this knowledge, our team’s most heartfelt goal
is to raise up a generation in nation-building, economic consciousness and
literacy, and a heart to serve one’s nation—raising up a generation one
student at a time
Thus we invite you to take part in this year’s biggest youth summit on
economics—Wealth of Nations: Ateneo Youth Economics Summit 2013.
Please do take time to read the rest of the primer and join us in making this
summit a success.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!

The Ateneo Economics Association (AEA) is the premier economics
organization of the Ateneo de Manila University. For over half a
century now, AEA has been the champion in promoting economics as
a tool for socio-economic development both inside and outside the
university, as well as organizing activities such as competitions and
fora to allow students and professionals alike to engage in discourse
and learn to love the subject of economics even more.
While AEA is the home organization of AB Economics and AB
Economics-Honors students, the organization is still very diverse.
With more than 250 members, AEA is a melting pot of students from
different degrees ranging from, BS Chemistry to AB Social Sciences
and BS Management Engineering, the AEA population is well-
represented.
The Ateneo Economics Association through the years has worked
with big names and institutions. Recently, AEA has been graced with
the participation of former President Fidel Ramos, President Benigno
Simeon Aquino III and many experts in the field of economics. And
for this year’s Youth Economics Summit, Senator Teofisto Guingona III
and Gawad Kalinga Founder Antonio Meloto shall be gracing us with
their presence.

Wealth of Nations: Ateneo Youth Economics Summit 2013 is an

competitions such as a quiz bee, an extemporaneous speaking
contest and a poster making contest.

What can you expect from this year’s Ateneo YES? Here are a few of the
things we have in store for you!
7
TG is a champion of good governance who
listens to people, understands their problems,
and strives to find and innovate methods
to address them.” This is what the Ateneo
Economics (and Law) Alumnus’s website says
about the good senator. Learn more from him
and his advocacy as he discusses Economics
and Good Governance in Ateneo YES 2013!
Founder of Gawad Kalinga Foundation: This dreamer’s
one dream is simple: to end poverty and see no man
a squatter in his own homeland. Equipped with a
heart for God and for others and with an Ateneo
Economics diploma from ’71, Tony set out to establish
Gawad Kalinga, and he will talk more about this in his
keynote speech on in Ateneo YES 2013.
We have invited an amazing bunch of Ateneo alumnus who will be
discussing the different current realities and the youth’s roles to
play in the near future.
About the speakers:
Senator Teofisto “TG” Guingona III
Antonio “Tony” Meloto
8
Former Chairperson of the Ateneo
Department of Economics: One of
The Ateneo Economics Department’s
top calibre professors, in his talk
“Why Bother With Economics?” will
engage high school students with
the fact that Economics IS important
and vital for a successful society
(and yes, even for a successful
individual). Coming with a doctorate
degree from the Jesuits’ Fordham
University in the United States, Dr.
de Guzman, who also authored
Ateneo’s General Economics textbook
entitled “Economics and Society”,
will surely ignite one’s interest and
understanding of economics. Catch
him in Ateneo YES 2013!
The speakers aren’t the only ones who will be talking. We highly
encourage you guys as well (this is for you!) to voice out your
thoughts, opinions, and suggestions regarding the different topics
that will be discussed.
Dr. Noel de Guzman, PhD
9
One of the main events of YES will be the
Economics Quiz Bee for the teams from different
schools to battle it out in different rounds, to find
out who has the E(conomic) Factor over the other
schools.
This is an opportunity for your school’s best
speaker to show everyone your excellence
in expressing one’s understanding on
current events and general economic ideas
and deliver on-the-spot speeches regarding
different economic principles. What do you
know, you can be the top orator!
10
The poster-making contest encourages
artistic expression on what it means for the
youth to be the wealth of nations.
Think we’re all theory? Think again! We’ll have a market simulation
wherein you will be faced with the different scenarios that happen in
the real world and deal with it as it affects not only you, but the whole
economy as well!
FOR ALL CONTESTS, THERE WILLALSO BE CASH PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS!
11
Take a stroll around Ateneo, and see the studying (and relaxing)
environment of the students.
Of course, YES isn’t just about learning. We want you to have fun as well!
You will participate in different games and activities that will expand your
network and help you form unforgettable bonds with other people.
Wealth of Nations: Ateneo Youth Economics Summit 2013 will truly teach us a lot, make us understand the world we’re living in today and do both things in the best and most fun way possible!
