FFrruuiit n Vt n Veeg Dg DeelliivveerryyWas started by Luke Elliot , Ben Charlton and Mike Graham in response to the Covid-19 crisis that has sadly affected the whole world. The objective was to provide fresh fruit and vegetables directly from the market to the people of South Woodham Ferrers. As the Railway Pub was closed the car park made the perfect venue to set up a fruit & veg stall to serve the public.

However, there was also a need to deliver to those people who were self isolating or could not easily leave the house. Many boxes later our team have been delivering directly, from the wholesalers, our bespoke boxes of fresh fruit n veg all over Essex.

What the boxes contain is governed by the availability of the produce, but as you can see from our website we are endeavouring to pack in as many of the essentials as possible. Please let us know of any special requests you may have and we will do our best to meet your needs.

We are hoping to build on our fruit n veg following and find more customers to appreciate our service. We look forward to delivering our superb boxes to you.

Have you had enough of the "Lockdown", and have been starved of a good day out?

"Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz group, are hoping to cheer you up in these depressing times. Performing their first gig since March, they are inviting you to the gardens of the Bell, Woodham Ferrers on Sunday 26th July, 2-4.30. This event will be carefully arranged outside, to make it easier to self distance between band and audience. We will, however be relying on good weather, and should it be inclement, we will have to cancel. (Also we will not be able to provide food). But all being well, we will be able to provide a joyous afternoon , with a mixture of classic jazz and songs from the "Great American Songbook". Before the pandemic we were building up a great following, and hopefully we will be able to "pick up" where we left off. So on the 26th we hope to see our old friends, (and some new ones) again in the Bell-fingers crossed.

FOCUS Issue 962 Feature

ON HEALTHFOCUS

5www.facebook/swfocus https://focuspp.com

Do you want the good news or the bad? Start with the bad news? OK. Here's the big question: Is a second wave inevitable. Sadly more and more of the experts are saying "Yes." There are times, however, when the rest of us seem to know as much as the cognoscenti. For example, in the lead up to the second Gulf War, Blair and Bush were saying 'Saddam has weapons of mass destruction' whereas the rest of us were saying: "No he hasn't" because Hans Blix kept popping up on our TV screens and telling us there weren't any. Another example - as the pandemic kicked off in the UK we were looking at the graph which showed that we were following exactly the same trajectory as Italy and we were watching Italian doctors popping up on news broadcasts saying: "Learn from our mistakes" ... and yet Prof. Neil Ferguson, working with out-of-date and not strictly relevant data and making over-optimistic assumptions, was giving advice which contributed to a delay in lockdown - with devastating consequences. Now we are being bombarded by pictures of mass gatherings for various reasons in various parts of the world - gatherings where social distancing is ignored. It's a case of "they think it' all over". Unfortunately COVID-19 is a social animal - it loves to party - and, even if we don't see an immediate generalised 2nd wave yet (because viruses tend to lie low when the days are long) we are doing enough to ensure that there's enough Covid-19 is circulating to spark a 2nd wave when conditions are favourable. Let's hope this time both we and the experts get it wrong and we all live happily ever after. As for the rest of the world - we are already seeing sporadic resurgences even in countries (such as Germany) which have done well. This week I saw this despairing tweet from a Croatian 'top doc': "In Croatia we came down to zero with new daily cases and now are back again reaching 1st wave heights ... :(" Peter Openshaw. Professor of Experimental Medicine at Imperial College, is giving good advice. In common with the 'non-experts' he has noted that mask wearing is commonplace in countries which have done well in preventing the spread of Covid-19. He also reminds us of the swine flu epidemic in which there were 3 waves (with summer dips in the number of cases) - and where the 3rd wave was the most severe. He makes an interesting comment about weather conditions and their effect on the virus. In humid conditions, whilst the virus is contained in droplets expelled from the mouth and nose, the droplets remain large and quickly fall to the ground. In dry conditions, however, the droplets dry out and stay airborne for longer - behaving "like a gas" - so there is more likelihood of you inhaling them and becoming infected. Prof Sir John Bell. Oxford's Regius Professor of Medicine, has talked about why older people are disproportionately hard hit by Covid-19. He mentioned "T cell senescence." Let me explain - T cells are a type of white blood (lymphocyte to be precise) which develop in the thymus gland (hence the name) and they work with scavenger cells called macrophages. Unlike macrophages which we are told can attack any invading cell or virus, each T-cell can supposedly wipe out only one type of virus. So ... Mr. T when young and fit is a fully paid up member of The A-Team. But the old Mr T grows progressively more feeble and less able to defend you against viral attack. We've heard a lot about antibodies and antibody tests recently - and there is controversy about how much protection antibodies give you. Two studies have shown that Covid-19 patients lose IgG antibodies within weeks or months after recovery. Indeed the standard advice is for people who have

antibodies for Covid-19 to remain as cautious as those who don't. Prof Francois Balloux disagrees - saying: " The titre of neutralising antibodies wanes, but Covid-19 induces long-lasting T-cell response and there's been no confirmed reinfection to date." What does 'T-cell senescence' mean to you? Cambridge's Prof Sir David Spiegelhalter says anyone over 45 is at greater risk and "a 70 year old has a hundred times the risk of a thirty year old" adding: "If they do catch it, it roughly doubles your chances of dying in a year." The good news is that the Oxford vaccine generates an antibody response AND a T cell response - it gives the virus 'the old one-two' - so, if it lives up to its early promise, it should be what politicians now call "a game changer." The Oxford group started from a strong base - they'd been working on vaccine for MERS so they were already in the right ballpark. Prof J.B. has a word of caution, however - it usually takes around 8 years to develop a vaccine. Indeed, there are some viruses for which there is no vaccine despite 20 years of trying ... and, in the current pandemic, the boffins have only been at it for a matter of weeks. There are, however, many groups working on vaccines around the world - so perhaps it's not being overoptimistic to hope that we'll have a vaccine before too long. COVID-19 and DIABETES. The journal 'Nature' says: "Mounting clues suggest the coronavirus might trigger diabetes. Evidence from tissue studies and some people with COVID-19 shows that the virus damages insulin-producing cells." We know that people with diabetes are more at risk from Covid-19 ... what we didn't know for sure was that, given this virus' ability to attack every part of the body from head to toe - every organ - the insulin producing cells in the pancreas are also susceptible to destruction. DO MASKS AFFECT YOUR BREATHING? The answer is 'surprisingly little'. If you measure your blood oxygen saturation using a little gadget called a pulse oximeter (about which I've written in the past) there is virtually no difference at rest between the times when you're wearing a mask and when you're not. Brennan Spiegel, Professor of Medicine and Public Health at UCLA, has taken it a step further. He asks: "Why do mask deniers claim that wearing a mask causes people to asphyxiate on their own C02?" He answers his own question: "I made this infographic to explain why. Covid-19 is 0.12μm. A C02 molecule is around 0.00065μm. The virus is around 185x larger, so CO2 easily crosses a mask. COVID doesn't. You're fine!" Dr John

Forgetfulness, one of the fallibilities of the present human condition, is, reassuringly, not restricted just to the elderly, man or woman. Eight and eighty-year-old children are equally prone to forget what their parents and teachers have told them to do or not to do! At the minimum, forgetfulness can be annoying and frustrating to others and ourselves but it can also be very dangerous. The greatest and longest lasting dangers arising from forgetfulness are found in our relationship with Almighty God. Proof of how dangerous the consequences are for us in this most important area of our lives can be seen in the history of Salvation as recorded in the Bible, which is littered with Israel, God’s Chosen People, forgetting about the Lord and the disastrous results which ensue for both the individual and the nation. Whenever Israel faced dangers and were forgetful of God’s saving power, they questioned His love for them, His wisdom in allowing them to suffer, and frequently deserted Him. The devil often tempts us to doubt in God’s love for what He has created, to doubt His wisdom in allowing circumstances to be what they are and tries to convince us that God either cannot or does not want to do anything to help us. If we forget the truth that the Almighty has brought everything and everyone into being simply because He loves the whole of creation; if we forget that God loves the world so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us before rising from the dead; if we forget that everything is possible for God, then when faced with the difficulties of life we are likely to say, “God does not really love us, I do not need Him to guide me, I know what is best for me and for others and I have the ability to obtain the best.” In our forgetfulness we proclaim ourselves not only equal to God, but greater than Him, the very opposite of the truth, of reality. Saint Francis of Assisi, often described as the most Christ-like Saint that ever lived, had, like us, to constantly remind himself not to forget God. Like us, Francis was tempted to consider his thoughts, words and actions to be far better than those of Almighty God. One of his antidotes to such forgetfulness was the reciting, over and over again, of a very short and deceivingly simple prayer, “My God and my All”. Yes, He is my God because He is our most loving, most wise, most powerful Father; yes, He is my All, because He is supremely more important than anything or anyone else. All of us are prone to forget Almighty God, unless we stay close to Him, talking and listening to Him every day in prayer. To forget God is to face the overwhelming challenges of life alone and they are simply too much for us. Canon Peter Connor OFS (Catholic Parish Priest of Danbury and South Woodham Ferrers)

FOCUS Issue 962

Colchester Zoo has now reopened. What’s changing from 4th July? Following the Government announcement on the 23rd June, from the 4th July Colchester Zoo will be making more areas accessible to visitors.

We’re pleased to confirm that from Saturday 4th July we will be re-opening all of our indoor buildings with 1m social distancing. To help us keep these indoor buildings open safely we are kindly asking and advising our visitors to wear masks when visiting these indoor areas particularly where social distancing is 1m. As we are opening up more areas within the park from the 4th July we have the capacity to allow more visitors into the zoo. Therefore from Saturday 4th July, everyday after 4.00pm, Zoo Passholders can visit the zoo without pre-booking a time slot. Please note entry is dependant on capacity within the park. We may be required to work on a 1-out 1-in system as a safety precaution and we therefore cannot guarantee entry if capacity does not allow. We will also be reopening the outdoor adventure play areas for children to enjoy however it is vitally important that all children are supervised and social distancing is enforced by guardians. A new cleaning routine will be implemented to ensure the play areas are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected regularly throughout the day. Please note that during the early stages of reopening the outdoor play areas some may remain closed whilst essential maintenance work takes place. Our Social Distance Route remains in place and we kindly ask visitors to follow this route to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable visit. Saturday 4th July will also see the return of our Lost Madagascar Express Road Train following the installation of perspex screens onto the carriages to ensure visitor safety. The train will not run at full capacity and will not stop at our lemur walkthrough enclosure until further notice. We’re pleased to be able to offer this experience back to our visitors despite it not being quite the same as before. Following reopening we have welcomed a huge reduction of visitors to what we usually receive during this time of year to enable social distancing. The reduction of visitors of course means a reduction of income and our visitor income is what we rely on to remain open and to continue the vital conservation work that we pride ourselves in. Every penny of income we receive is always reinvested into the zoo, improving both animal and visitors’ facilities but also participating or funding conservation projects not just here at the zoo but across the world. We’re not out of the woods yet, despite being open now our fight

continues and so if you are able to continue to lend us a helping hand towards our survival please come along and enjoy a visit if you can or donate online to our Operating Fund. Alternatively, you may like to book an animal experience or adopt an animal, perhaps you may like to become a Zoo Passholder – all of the income from these products are also a huge help towards our future. We’ll keep you updated with any further changes as and when we receive further Government guidance. In the meantime, we hope that we are able to welcome you along soon for a safe and enjoyable day out exploring the wonders of wildlife.

SWF Inner Wheel recently held their AGM when President Maureen Graham provided an update on the past year. The main charities supported during the year were Riding for the Disabled (Barrow Farm), Parkinson’s UK Chelmsford Branch, the new Youth Club, Marble Project and Mary’s Meals. The year started well, but was tinged with great sadness, when joint President Brenda Peffer passed away in February 2020. Brenda was a very popular and caring member who is missed and will always hold a special place in our hearts.

We are pleased to announce the appointments of Kim Tipler (above) as the new club President 2020/21 and Lynda Eldon as Vice President. Kim has lived in the town for 34 years; both her children have grown up in South Woodham Ferrers. Kim is committed to ensuring SWF Inner Wheel remains a friendly club providing support to the local community through fundraising, organisation of the annual Arts & Crafts Weekend and volunteering efforts. SWF Inner Wheel are also proud to report Past President and member Alison Monk (right), has been installed as joint District Chairman of District 24. We wish Alison success in her new role at Association Level continuing to encourage women to work together, make a difference and improve lives.

THE HAZARD OF GRASS SEED INHALATION

You may think that my description of problems associated with simple grass seeds is an over-dramatisation but once you know of the life-threatening problem they can cause, then you’ll perhaps agree with the term of ‘hazard’. Our most recent casualty was a large breed dog that was brought into me on a Sunday afternoon with a reported mild cough of a few days’ duration. On clinical examination I found nothing abnormal and on listening to her chest with a stethoscope, there was no wheeze or anything to suggest any pathology. Because of Covid19 we are meeting owners outside the practices, discussing their problems and then taking the pets into the practice to examine them and then, returning them to their owners. On returning this lovely dog to her owner, I stated that I had found nothing wrong with her and then suddenly, out of the blue, she coughed very softly; the owner reported that this was the cough the family had heard and immediately my thought was that of lower respiratory airway disease. I started asking the owner whether she had been going through any long grass, to which he said that she had been bounding through a field a few days prior to presentation and it was after this that she had started coughing. My suspicion was raised to the possibility of an inhaled grass seed that had lodged in her lungs and I booked Winnie in for the following day for sedation, chest x-rays and possibly bronchoscopy (endoscope into the airways) to look for a possible grass seed. The following day I sedated her; on the x-rays, I could see a very small area of possible consolidation in her lungs. Unfortunately, because of her large size, our bronchoscope was not quite long enough to reach the area of concern. I discussed my findings with her owners and recommended referral for full bronchoscopy and in the meantime, whilst they decided on whether to take up the option of referral to a specialist, I decided to start her on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. By Wednesday, she was no longer coughing, and the owners reported that she seemed well again but thank-goodness, they wanted to ensure that she had not inhaled a grass seed and took up the referral option. On Thursday morning she was anaesthetised by the specialist and this is what she retrieved with her endoscope: If this had not been removed (and I have seen this happen before), there would have been two scenarios: • She would have eventually been referred, by which time it would

have been impossible to visualise and remove the grass seed via bronchoscopy because of the severity of the inflammation and infection in the area. She would have then undergone a CT scan to determine the extent of the infection and inflammation of the surrounding lung tissue and thereafter, once the CT confirmed that the lung lobe was consolidated, she would have undergone general anaesthesia for a lung lobectomy, meaning that her chest cavity would have been surgically opened and the affected lung lobe removed. This would have caused considerable pain, but she would have survived but that it is only the start of the potential problems. There would be a high risk thereafter of her developing a condition called pulmonary hypertension, which would have required lifelong twice daily medication to slow down progressive heart disease and ultimately a few years down the road, she would have gone into chronic heart failure and ultimately died as a result of heart disease. • The second scenario would have been that the consolidation of the lung lobe had spread beyond the lobe and that there was nothing else available but to put this youngster to sleep. Cost of our investigation and the retrieval of the grass seed by the specialist – approximately £1500. Cost of the second option – conservative estimate for investigations, surgery and lifelong treatment – probably ten times the above figure! Solution: Please avoid long grass, cut grass or perhaps any grass that has gone to seed at this time of the year as they are treacherous things. They find their way into manner of orifices; we find them in ears, between dogs toes buried deep within the tissue, necessitating on many occasions, a couple of surgeries to retrieve these menaces, buried in the tissue of armpits of dogs, in their eyes under their third eyelids, causing corneal ulcers, those that have managed to work their way into the back muscles and have worked their way into the abdomen, caused peritonitis and death, those that have been found in bitches’ vagina, lodged in the cervix! How on earth do these dreadful bits of grass get everywhere? They are like darts; they have a sharp end that pushes forward and there is no way back with the splayed tail end. Please avoid them and spare our dogs the suffering they experience with these hazards. Jürgen Theinert BVSc BSc MRCVS Edgewood Veterinary Group

Do you live or work within five minutes of South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station?

South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station is on the lookout for people who spend their days or nights close by. The fire station, which is based on Ferrers Road, is recruiting on-call firefighters; people who live or work within five minutes of the station and are paid to respond to incidents when called upon. Dan Wastell, Station Manager, said: "During the ongoing pandemic we’ve seen a real shift in community spirit - people are continually asking how they can support public services and make a difference to where they live. "The message is simple - if you live close enough then please consider applying to be an on-call firefighter, and if you don’t live close enough, then show your support by sharing our recruitment messages. "And please, keep that community spirit and positivity going. The Thursday night clapping may have finished but you can still show your appreciation for our crews by simply recognising the time and commitment they give to keep you safe." On-call firefighters are paid a standby rate and an additional hourly rate for attending incidents and training. The amount on-call firefighters get paid depends on their availability but they can earn anywhere between £4,000 and £8,000 a year, sometimes more. To become an on-call firefighter, you’ll need to pass an assessment day including a fitness test, which you'll be supported through by the Service Fitness Team. After passing your initial fitness test, you’ll spend two full weeks training at ECFRS's Service Training Centre followed by a further evening session for 10 weeks. Lee Murray, on-call firefighter at South Woodham Ferrers said: "You never know when or what the call you receive will be for. When your pager does go off, the adrenaline rush you get is amazing!" "Speak to your immediate family to ensure that you can fit the role into your current lifestyle and if you can’t, are you willing to make sacrifices to make it work for you? If you can it is the most rewarding and exciting job." Between Monday 6 July - Friday 10 July the station is holding a recruitment week. Although it’s not possible to visit the station at the moment, the team will be available for a telephone call, email

It's been a while since our churches were able to welcome you for worship and special occasions, and we have missed you! There’s lots of (socially distanced) activity going on as we are now in the process of making our buildings COVID-SECURE. Government guidelines ask us to clean, space out chairs, mark up pews, remove soft furnishings, put up signage, put down tape etc. etc. I am sure you know what is required. So bear with us, as we complete this work and once we are sure everything is as safe as it can be, we’ll let you know. I’d like to say normal service(s) will be resumed, but there’ll be a ‘new normal’, and I will give you details as soon as I can. In the meantime, please know that although the buildings are closed, the church is still open. We meet regularly in the virtual world, to worship together and pray for our community. If you have any questions, or need any help, or would like to join our virtual services please contact: Reverend Carol Ball: (01245 322134) / email: [email protected]. God bless and keep safe!
