INC ’s List of Candidates for 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election
Reunion marks Longpi ‘Luita’ festival in UkhrulR LESTER MAKANG
UKHRUL: It was a joyous and his-toric occasion for the villagers of Longpi village as the two localities of the village came together for the first time after more than a decade to celebrate the annual seed sowing ‘Luita/Luira’ festival at the local play-ground from January 27-30.
It was also a celebration of the reunion of Longpi Khullen and Loree Kajui as one in as much as the celebration of the seed sowing season.
For about 12 years, the lo-cal administration within the Longpi village had been split into two with one headed by the customary headman and the other by elected chairman-ship over a certain misunder-standing. With the arrival of
New Year, better sense and understanding prevailed and reconciliation among the Longpi Khullen and Loree Kajui villagers was reached recently. Subsequently, the two localities reunited under the collective administration
of customary chief Vaoyang R Shimray ahead of the aus-picious festival.
Longpi village is one of the villages in Raphei area of Ukhrul district which cele-brates Luita festival in the first month of the year- some two
weeks prior to the common date of February 15 when most other Tangkhul villages of the district celebrate Luira festival. The reason for early celebration of Luita in Raphei area ranging from Marem village to Shirui village is the fact that by mid February most crops have al-ready sprouted up in Raphei area which is commonly be-lieved to be a fertile region.
Director (agriculture) Louise Ngashainao and RBI Imphal manager Achan Sharon at-tended the festival as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
In his speech, Ngashainao lauded the Nungpi villagers for reaching an understand-ing among themselves and re-marked that Nungpi village has set an example which other
villages could also emulate to end their misunderstanding or crisis.
At one point of time, certain misunderstanding between the two localities stood in the way of mutual trust, thereby dis-rupting progress in the village, Ngashainao observed and went on to add that with the recon-ciliation, Nungpi village will now be on the right track of development and much more besides.
He also said that the age old tradition of savouring indigenous brew like Shang-kan, Vaithei, Pasho and Khor has become extinct in most Tangkhul villages today and added that it is only Nung-pi village that is keeping the tradition alive till date.

Oinam Doren’s new film nominated for ‘Tangible Culture Prize’ in UK
CHRONICLE BUREAU
IMPHAL: National award winning filmmaker Oi-nam Doren’s new film “My name is Eeooow” has been nomi-nated for the
Tangible Culture Prize at the 15th RAI Film Festival which will take place at Watershed in Bristol, United Kingdom from March 29 to April 1.
The film will also have its world premiere at the festival.
The film is set in Kongthong village in East Khasi Hills, Me-ghalaya. Kongthong is a quaint little village located about 60 km away from the Meghalaya
capital Shillong. Kongthong villagers prac-
ticed a unique tradition called ‘Jyngwrai Lawbei’, which is a practice of having musical tunes as names in honour of clan ancestress. The song's names come as an expression of the mother’s love for her new born and the film follows the families of two married sisters, Shidiap Khongsit and Shithoh Khongsit, whose children have to stay in Shillong for higher studies as the village school has provision for only up to class seven.
The sisters’ families depend mostly on broom and betel nuts cultivation as a source of income.

BT ROAD KILLING CASE
Drivers exposed to risk as NH-37 remains in pathetic conditionSAGOLSEM BIGYAN
IMPHAL: As political par-ties have converted the Imphal-Jiribam road, which is only 220 Km long, into a political trump card, the road resembles a dust bowl in summer and a muddy streams in rainy season.
Border Roads Organisa-tion (BRO) has been entrusted with the task of repairing the road for long. However, the condition of the road has not improved over the years. Different political parties had made assurances of repairing it time and again, but they are yet to translate their words into action.
Civil organisations, so-cial activists and different sections of the society have launched agitations in the past, demanding that the highway stretch be repaired.
However, the fate of the
pitiable national highway re-main unknown as authorities concerned are ignoring the issue.
The road is turned into a dust bowl during summer which is dangerous for vehi-cles plying on the road.
In addition to that the road takes the appearance of a muddy streams in rainy season. Travelling in this road is quite an ordeal during those
times. Due to the ongoing in-
definite economic blockade imposed by United Naga Council, the movement of vehicles transporting dai-ly essential items and fuel has been restricted. Some drivers were even injured when unidentified persons attacked the vehicles plying on the road.

cement-laden trucks and other trucks hauling other goods total-ing to 300 left Jiribam for Imphal amid tight security provided by CRPF personnel.

Many trucks at Jiribam remain static JIRI: Even as CAF & PD officials identify trucks which remained stranded at Jiri for a long time and make arrangement for them to join the convoy to Imphal as per directive of higher authori-ties, security personnel escorting the trucks are not complying with the said instructions and hence many stranded trucks remain at the newly created district.
Disclosing this to media per-sons in the presence of rep-resentatives of drivers’ union, District Supply Officer (DSO), Ji-ribam W Shyam said around 400 trucks currently lined up along Jiri-Tipaimukh road entered the state between January 10 and 20 and those lining up along Imphal-Jiri national highway entered the state very recently.

Interestingly, the final list of can-didates of the party, which has been making a strong pitch for women’s reservation bill all long, could see only two women candidates get-ting the stamp of approval from All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief Sonia Gandhi, who herself is an indomitable political figure in the country. The two women candidates who made it to the list are Ak Mirabai of Patsoi assem-bly constituency and Loitongbam Tilotama of Langthabal assembly constituency.
MLA of Khangabok assembly constituency O Landhoni, who is
the wife of chief minister O Ibobi, has voluntarily opted out from con-testing in the election to pave way for her son Surajkumar Okram to make foray into politics. He will be contesting the election this time as Congress candidate from Khanga-bok assembly constituency.
With MLA Nemcha Kipgen re-signing from the Congress and join-ing the BJP recently, the Congress party has picked up another tough competitor for the electoral battle in Kangpokpi assembly constitu-ency in Kharga Tamang, who was till recently an active BJP worker.
For the record, Kharga Tamang had a narrow defeat in the hands of Nemcha Kipgen during the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly elec-tions. They were in a neck-to-neck contest at that time and it would be hard to predict who will have the upper hand this time too.
With former Congress MLA N
Biren of Heingang assembly con-stituency resigning from the pri-mary membership of the party and joining the BJP, the Congress has allotted ticket to N Ratan (Kappu) to pit against Biren. In Wangkhei assembly constituency, Congress has fielded Okram Henry, the neph-ew of chief minister O Ibobi, to compete against former Congress MLA Y Erabot, who too has shifted allegiance to BJP. RS Henry Hiilii will be competing as INC candi-date from Tadubi constituency and he will have a faceoff with former Congress MLA and minister Francis Ngajokpa, who is now the face of BJP in the erstwhile Congress dom-inated assembly segment..

sembly constituency, Z Kikhonbou, who was also a Congress MLA before joining BJP, have to face Congress candidate GM Kumuilung (Dr Aku).

‘Fraud contractor among BJP leaders’STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL: Slamming BJP for alleged-ly trying to fool the public with its fraud-ulent nature to garner votes, MPCC spokes-person Kh Joykisan Friday claimed that there is a contrac-
tor among the leaders of BJP, who gets contract work with fake bank guarantee.
Addressing media persons at Con-gress Bhavan here on Friday, Joykisan asserted that BJP leaders are trying to fool the people by charging Con-gress government of being inactive in taking up development works and unable to complete several projects. However, stalling of road widening project from Canchipur to Lilong
and road improvement project from Imphal to Mao were due to the fraud-ulent action of a BJP leader. In fact, the state government had to intervene after the contractor of the said Rs 60 crore project, who is also a BJP leader, was found using fake bank guarantee of Rs 6.37 crore from Manipur Rural Bank, Joykisan said.
The same BJP leader has also col-lected around Rs 2 crore from dif-ferent individuals of Thangmeiband assembly constituency on the false promise of awarding contract works. Moreover, he refused to pay back the amount taken when asked for refund, stating that he had invested the amount in gold trade. The state would be in total chaos if such people were elected and given the rein of power, he maintained.
