• Mechanical Weathering is also called Physical Weathering• Mechanical Weathering does not does not reform the mineral composition of any rock.•The Main Agents Affecting Mechanical Weathering:• 1. Gravity 2. Water 3. Wind 4. Organisms

Page 5: Weather: Part One

Ice Wedging & Frost Action In the first step, the water infiltrates. After, the water infiltrates due to temperature & climate reform, the ice freezes. When water freezes and becomes ice the volume increases by 10%. In effect, this creates and exerts high pressure on the rock causing it to break and crack.

Page 6: Weather: Part One

The collision of rocks result in the breaking apart and wearing (weathering)

of rock material which is called ABRASION. ABRASION.

Page 7: Weather: Part One
Page 8: Weather: Part One

Abrasion Here is the result and effect of what happens to the collision, falling, and the forces of gravity of rocks when they fall/tumble down slopes.

Page 9: Weather: Part One

•As plants grow, their roots grow too.•As they expand they create pressure on surrounding rocks that causes them to wedge apart and crack.•Animal Activities such as burrowing contribute to mechanical weathering as well.

Page 10: Weather: Part One

• A Synonym for chemical weathering could be decomposition• Chemical weathering relates to the chemical reactions or changes that act on minerals in rock and materials. •Chemical Weathering affects BOTH BOTH the physical and mineral composition/appearance of rocks and materials.

OxidationProcess which elements and materials

combine and interact with oxygenCauses things such as rusting of materials Here are some examples An Apple RustingA Rusted or Rusting Penny (Coin)Rusted Cars or Vehicles

HydrolysisChemically Involves and usage of Water

(H20)Minerals often dissolve water. The water then caries minerals to lower

layers of rock (similar to what occurs in soil horizons in soil profile) which is called/named leaching.

Hydrolysis is a crucial role in chemical weathering.

Page 14: Weather: Part One

How does Acid Affect Weathering?

Carbonic acid which uses carbon dioxide speeds up the process of hydrolysis

Acids seep (sink into) rocks and produce cracks.

Acid Precipitation Acid Precipitation also affects weathering. Acid precipitation is categorized under chemical weathering.
