day to tell his mother. He went to Norfolk,

VA to tape the Battle of theBands. After it was done, hewas with the other photog-raphers in a van when hehad a grand mal seizure, says Lisa.

During a grand malseizure, also known as ageneralized tonic-clonic

seizure, a person will expe-rience a loss of conscious-ness and violent musclecontractions. Its caused byabnormal electrical activitythroughout the brain. Mostof the time grand malseizure is caused byepilepsy. but can be trig-gered by other health prob-lems, such as extremely lowblood sugar, high fever or astroke.

Many people who havea grand mal seizure willnever have another one. Butothers may need daily med-ication to prevent futureseizures.

    DiagnosisAfter his seizure, Jor-

dan was taken to WalterReid Hospital and given anMRI.

The MRI showed hehad scar tissue in his lefttemporal lobe, says Lisa. That indicated he hadepilepsy.

Jordan was given med-ications for epilepsy. Al-

though he had otherseizures, he remained in theMarines. Eventually, hewas medically retired witha 40% disability, whichmeant he was able to keephis health insurance, saysLisa.

He came home andwas doing great. He en-rolled at St. Cloud State and

rented an apartment withtwo roommates, says Lisa.He rode his bike to collegeevery day. He loved goingto college.

But 16 months later, atthe end of Sept. 2012, hehad another seizure.

When youre takingmedication and have aseizure, its known as abreakthrough seizure, saysLisa. Maybe the medica-tion isnt working anymoreor maybe you gained

weight and the medicationisnt enough anymore.

Jordan was taken to theemergency room and wasadvised to go to the VAHospital in St. Cloud. Thedoctor he was supposed tosee wasnt available. OnOct. 10, he saw anotherdoctor and was told heshould see a neurologist at

    the Minneapolis VA Hospi-tal.

He got a letter in themail, says Lisa. The ap-pointment date was Dec.21.

Last SeizureJordan never made it to

that appointment. On Nov.26, he had another seizureand died. His roommatesfound him slumped over hiscomputer.

When they came totell us Jordan died, my first

thought was he had aseizure and hit his head, says Lisa.

Because Jordan passedaway when he was alone, they did an autopsy. Thecoroners report foundnothing abnormal.

He didnt have a heartattack or an enlarged heart -nothing physically theycould find that would causehim to die, says Lisa. That is a really good indi-cation of SUDEP.

Lisa says perfectly nor-mal people have died fromSUDEP without warning.

Twenty is the medianage. Theyre doing researchon it and still arent 100%sure what causes it, saysLisa. Theres speculationthat it has something to dowith the brain stem.

    After Jordans death,Lisa was devastated.

When your childpasses away, you reallydont function. You just

live, and some people canteven do that, says Lisa.

But she still had a 10-year old son to care for, anda daughter and grandson.

People were tellingme I had lots of people de-pending on me, she says. That helped me pushthrough the grief.

    Helping OthersAlmost a year later,

friends asked Lisa if shewas going to do anything

for the anniversary of Jor-dans death.

I had an idea aboutdoing a public service an-nouncement on SUDEP,she says. I thought, if Idont know much about it,theres probably a lot ofpeople out there who haveno clue about SUDEP.

Lisa and her daughterflew to the east coast andsome of Jordans videogra-pher friends filmed thepiece, which was put onYoutube.

A year later she wantedto do more. She startedlooking on Facebook andfound a site on the EpilepsyFoundation of Kentuckianathat had a program for vet-erans.

She contacted the pro-grams coordinator, JohnMustain and sent him herYoutube video. He startedusing it at his presentations.

Then she went to Ken-tucky to see him last Febru-

ary. He gave herinformation she could usefor training.

When Lisa returned toMinnesota, she started put-ting together her own idea. She called Vicki Kopplin, the director of the EpilepsyFoundation of MN and pre-sented her with her pro-posal, called MOVES -Minnesota Outreach forVeterans with Epilepsy andSeizures.

She got a call the nextday.

I have 100% backingfrom the Epilepsy Founda-tion. Its all volunteer, saysLisa. They set me up withbusiness cards and projec-tor to do Powerpoints. I tryto tell a little bit of Jordansstory, but I really want tofocus on people under-standing epilepsy andSUDEP.

Lisa sent letters toabout 30 American Legionsand VFWs. She has done afew presentations but hasnthad a big response so far.Shed like to have morevenues to get her messageto the public.

My purpose is to getout there and tell peoplewhat SUDEP is and thingsyou can do to increase yourodds, like taking medica-tions regularly and on time. Also avoiding stress, get-ting good sleep, avoidingalcohol, drugs and smok-

ing, she says. Im doingthis because I want to helpother people with these sit-uations. Its part of my heal-ing process.

Lisa is currently mak-ing arrangements to speakat the Clearwater AmericanLegion. No date has ben setso far.

Lisa can be contactedat 651-287-2328 or [email protected].
