How you and your students can use Delicious

Create working bibliographies for projects by ensuring they share a common tag.

Build lists of resources with students/ teachers (decide on common tags first).

Create a network with friends or colleagues with whom you share an interest.

Subscribe to tags of favorite topics. Add ‘Delicious’ to Facebook profile. Add a linkroll or tag cloud to personal blog or one

made for school or activity. Add Delicious ‘feed’ to Netvibes.

RSS Feeds

News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content.

You can get the latest headlines and video in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

Feeds are also known as RSS. There is some discussion as to what RSS stands for, but most people plump for 'Really Simple Syndication'.

If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader.

Most sites that offer feeds use a similar orange button, but some may just have a normal web link.

Delicious or Diigo?

Page 19: Web 2.0 Social Bookmarking and Start Pages in the Classroom Sally Todd, St John’s School Library, April 2009

Why not use both?

User base for Diigo is much smaller and subscription features are under review

Both Delicious and Diigo allow you to save links with various tags, connect to other users who have saved the same post or used the same tag, and track users or specific tags

Diigo allows you to highlight sections of the Web page you’re on, and lets

you attach sticky notes to the site. When you go back to that page those highlights and notes are still visible

If you forward a page to someone else who has a Diigo account they can also see the highlights and add their own.

If you add something to your Diigo account, it also gets added to your Delicious account.

Use as a backup for your bookmarks in case one or other website disappears

Top Tips for Netvibes

Add a ‘search engine’ widget (choose between Google, Yahoo, Live or

Snap)

Bypass opening Google in new tab or browser

Take advantage of e-mail feeds – Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo Mail

Set public pages as ‘view only’ – so students cannot change or alter

anything

Use tabs for different subject curriculum or topic areas

Find relevant bookmarks

Add to ‘Bookmark’ widget

Run searches in Delicious – topics will be updated

Students can use this as a launch pad to go off and find more information
