Electronic portfolios can be created for multiple purposes: learning/ process, showcase/marketing/ employment, and assessment/ accountability. Electronic portfolios can be created with learners of all ages. There are now services emerging to store digital documents online for a lifetime. Web 2.0 is a term that describes recent changes in the Internet for more read/write user participation. These changes include blogs, wikis, podcasts, GoogleApps and Docs, online video, RSS feeds, social bookmarks and social networks. Dr. Helen Barrett is an internationally recognized expert on electronic portfolio development for learners of all ages. Her website ( electronicportfolios.org ) is often recognized as one of the most authoritative and comprehensive on the Internet. Dr. Barrett was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award by EIFEL at the Fifth Annual EuroPortfolio Conference in Maastricht, The Netherlands, October 2007, to recognize her contribution to ePortfolio research and development. Dr. Barrett’s experience with electronic portfolios ranges from family involvement in early childhood, to research in K-12 schools, to Teacher Education programs in universities. Course DescriptionCreate your own online portfolio using free Web 2.0 tools while becoming familiar with how a variety of these tools can be used to support learning across the lifespan, including:• informal learning (family archives, digital scrapbooks, social networking)• formal learning (e-portfolios in K-12 and higher education)• professional development (professional e-portfolios in the work place)• memory extenders after retirement (Memex, digital stories and legacy)

Course Outline:• Web 2.0 Overview: What is Web 2.0? What are the characteristics of

Web 2.0 tools that facilitate interactive learning?

• Blogs & RSS: How can we use web log (blog) tools as eJournals to

document learning over time? How do we use RSS feeds to keep track of

changes in web pages?

• E-Portfolios: How can we use Web 2.0 tools to create presentation

portfolios in formal education for different purposes and audiences?

• Online Digital Storage: How can we set up an online repository for our

digital life?

• Social Networks: How do FaceBook, MySpace, Ning or LinkedIn support

informal and social learning? How do Social Bookmarks support learning?

• Photo Archives: How can we use digital photo archives as part of lifelong

photo archives and digital scrapbooks of life experiences?

• Professional Development: How can we use Web 2.0 tools to document

our professional achievements over a career?

• Online Multimedia Content: How can we use online multimedia tools to

tell our stories digitally? (podcasting and digital storytelling)

• Memory Extenders: How can we use our online digital storage to

maintain a lifetime of memories that we can use to write our

autobiographies or leave a legacy?

Technology requirements: access to high speed Internet, personal computer running Windows XP or Vista, or Macintosh OS X, running latest version of Firefox web browser and Skype.
