This is a microscopic view of fragments of charcoal (black) and pollen grains (pink) from anancient swamp deposit. Microscopic studies from a number of sites showed that charcoal

appeared suddenly about 128!1"# $%& at the same time as tree pollen decreased. This isbelieved to be caused by deliberate burning soon after the first humans arrived and settled in'ew ealand. http**www.teara.govt.n+*en*photograph*12#",*fossil-charcoal-fragments

A dark field micrograph of activated charcoal. Notice the fractal-like shape of the particles hinting at their

enormous surface area. Each particle in this image, despite being only around 0.1 mm wide, has a surface area

of several square metres. This image of activated charcoal in water is at a scale of 6.236 pixels/m, the entire

image covers a region of approximately 1.13 by 0.69 mm.
