Is it written somewhere in the Bible that we should get things done efficiently and/or effectively? Did Jesus keep a ‘to-do’ list? Would the Disciples have practiced Six Sigma techniques or have kept a clean email inbox? What does the Scripture say about being productive? In his book, What’s Best Next, How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done, Matt Perman suggests that the Bible says quite a bit about being productive. However, he believes that we often get the concept wrong. Instead of being efficient, we should instead focus on effectiveness. Perman, a writer and theologian, claims “When most people think of productivity, they think of efficiency— getting more things done faster. While efficiency is important, it is secondary. More important than efficiency is effectiveness— getting the right things done. Efficiency doesn’t matter if you are doing the wrong things in the first place.” Perman cites the apostle Paul in Romans 14: 10, 12, “For we will all stand before the judg- ment seat of God.... Each of us will give an account of himself to God”. According to Per- man, this means that God is the ultimate measure and judge of our productivity. Things that do not pass muster at the final judgment are, by definition, not productive in an ultimate sense. On the other hand, passing the final judgment is the ultimate meaning of a productive life. Hence, in order to know what is truly productive, we need to look to God first, not our- selves or even our own desires.’ So, what do we do to live productive lives as Christians? It doesn’t seem that checking email continuously should be priority #1. Instead, perhaps we should look to Christ as an example of living productively. We see this right in Matthew 5:16, where Jesus sums up for us the en- tire purpose of our lives: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”. Perman sums it up simply as ‘Do Good for Others’. At Guyton Christian Church, we are blessed with many active members and participants. As we continue to seek to be Disciples and to spread the Good News, let’s remember that we don’t have to stress about doing everything that we’re asked to do. And we don’t have to worry if we have incomplete ‘to do’ lists. Instead, we simply need to follow the example and instruction of Christ. As John Wesley said, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the peo- ple you can, as long as you ever can.” Or, in other words, to be productive is to do all the good you can! Being Productive as Christians

Should Christians be productive?

Efficiency doesn’t matter if you are doing the wrong things in the first place.”

Perman cites the apostle Paul in Romans 14: 10, 12, “For we will all stand before the judg-ment seat of God.... Each of us will give an account of himself to God”. According to Per-man, this means that God is the ultimate measure and judge of our productivity. Things that do not pass muster at the final judgment are, by definition, not productive in an ultimate sense. On the other hand, passing the final judgment is the ultimate meaning of a productive life. Hence, in order to know what is truly productive, we need to look to God first, not our-selves or even our own desires.’

So, what do we do to live productive lives as Christians? It doesn’t seem that checking email continuously should be priority #1. Instead, perhaps we should look to Christ as an example of living productively. We see this right in Matthew 5:16, where Jesus sums up for us the en-tire purpose of our lives: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”.

As John Wesley said, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the peo-ple you can, as long as you ever can.”

Or, in other words, to be productive is to do all the good you can! Yours in Christ,

Have you ever wondered where God is at work in your life?

Have you ever heard of Spiritual Direction? Spir-itual Direction, an ancient ministry of the church, is journeying with another individual or group by helping them to notice how God is at work in their lives. It is not about telling someone what to believe or how to act. Rather, it is a trusting rela-tionship of holy listening that relies on the guid-ance and presence of the Holy Spirit to discover, name and engage for themselves what God is do-ing in their life. Spiritual direction helps a person to build a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Karen Cote recent-ly completed Certification in Spiritual Direction with Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. If you have an interest in learning more about or engaging in Spiritual Di-rection, please let Karen know.
