Prez Sez:

This is a time when all of us need to be reminded that from tragedy comes hope and the

renewal of the human spirit.

In an address given in 1967 in South Africa, Robert Kennedy stated that, “It is from numberless acts of diverse courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time we stand up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lives of other, or strikes out against injustice, they send forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring these ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of evil, oppression and resistance.”

Let’s keep those Soroptimist ripples coming as only we can.

Christine Hernandez, a native Las Vegan and director of the Jean Nidetch Women’s Center at UNLV. Catherine Bellver began the introduction about the UNLV Women's Center. She related to us its humble beginnings and they were humble, consisting of a very small office and no paid staff. What a change in such a short time. Christina says that the programs are still manned by volunteers who affirm and proclaim that there is no place at UNKV for campus violence, especially rape. The volunteers maintain a twenty-four hour hot line for students who need help or to report instances of bullying, rape and trafficking. The Women's Center is close partners with Rape Crisis and the Domestic Violence Centers bur retains its own unique identity.

Soroptimist Orientation and

Leadership Training

Post-secondary education has been a crucial part of SIGLV's mission for most of our 50 years. What is now our Live Your Dream award - - - currently $1500 - - - has been through a number of transformations and remains Soroptimist International of the Americas' signature program. First it was called TAP (Training Awards Program). Then it became WOA (Women's Opportunity Award), and now it is LYD. The purpose, however, remains unchanged: to give financial assistance and recognition to a woman head of household who is pursuing post-secondary credentials in order to achieve sustainability for her future.

We have also been supporters of WRIN since its early days and of the Re-

Entry Center at what is now CSN. Currently we provide welcome bags to NEWLeadership students and provide an annual financial gift to WRIN.

In maintaining support of women students, we are contributing to an equitable balance in business, politics, and society in general. Good for us, but, of course, we can always do better.

Till next time

sonally called every single sales director in Las Vegas Valley to check on her, her family and her unit consultants to be assured their family and friends were safe following Sundays tragedy. SOLT WISDOM

The horror of the 10-1-17 mass killing affects us all

profoundly. Add to that the devastation of hurricanes,

earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. Then there is

the threat of nuclear war, political disarray, famine, and

extreme poverty. How do we cope? What can we do?

In our club’s 50 years we have experienced a failed war, a

couple of depressions, constantly changing technology, a

current war that seems endless, instant and confusing

communication, terrorism and more.

But also in those 50 years we, SIGLV, have done the only

sustainable thing within our power. It didn’t fix the world; it

didn’t make headlines. What we did was improve the lives

of women and girls in dozens of ways. Despair in not part

of our club DNA. Hope, love, compassion, generosity, and

caring for one another ---- these are the strands of our

DNA. That’s SIGLV.

Till next time -----

W e are making the fleece blankets and scarves for THT winter survival kits. Using funds from our SNR

endowment grant, our goal is to complete 75 beautiful, warm, attractive blankets. We have a upcoming blanket afternoon on Sunday Oct 15, 1-4 pm. East side at Kim’s west side at Lois’. Lois can provide cut blankets to those members who prefer to “knot” at home. We’ve already completed 20 blankets, and 12 more to cut and tie. Kim also have 15 blankets to complete. THT took 24 blankets to have their volunteers complete. Thanks to Alicia, Sharon and Dawn for starting early!

The fleece scarves (now 84) are cut and ready to fringe. 12” wide, this is a quick easy job, about 8 4” cuts on the end, and they do not have to be tied. They look really nice using the snip and pull through method. We can show you how! Call Kim or Lois if you can help!

N ow that blankets are well under way, we can concentrate on the Winter Survival Kits. Check with friends and

colleagues to see if they would donate. Donation letter available from Kathy.
