Monday

Date: 2/1/21

What kind of lights are around us? How does light help us? (Artificial vs Natural light sources, light gives us energy, night vs day activity)

Unit Light

To begin our discussion on light we will brainstorm ideas of different types of light sources and create a chart. We will then read the book “the very lonely firefly by Eric Carle) in the book it discusses many forms of light from artificial to natural.

Literacy Center: They will use books to identify words that begin with our special letter/ Cut and paste pictures of things that begin with the letters of the month. One for each week: Oo

Dramatic Play:

Camping under the stars. Add a play tent and the children’s campfires they created from large group. Discuss and write down what is needed to go camping? The children can also play with their own flashlights in the center. (We will keep it up as long as children are engaged with it. Below are alternatives for home)

At home as a tent, you can use a blanket and 2 chairs have your child pretend they are camping. Have them enjoy some snacks inside their tent.

Math Center:

How many stars tall are you? Have the children measure each other and count how many stars they need to measure their peers. They will also be provided with paper and crayons to write the number they counted. If they need assistance, the teacher will provide a number line for the child to see the number.

Science Center: The children will use the light table and add colored shapes that are transparent and shapes that are opaque. Discuss the meanings to these terms and let the children draw the shapes they made on a separate paper. At home you can use a clear box if available and a flashlight to make your DIY light table.

Writing Center

  Using a white paper hang it on the wall have the children use their flashlights with alphabet letters and make letters on the wall. They will say the letter or repeat after teacher if they don’t recognize it. Then they will write the letters on a separate piece of paper.

Art Center: Fireflies:  create a firefly using construction paper, glue, tissue paper, and gold reflective paper to be the light of the firefly.

at home you can use paper and crayons to draw your own firefly. Have a visual prepared of the word firefly for the children to write to the best of their abilities.

Block Center: Build a house with windows and put tea lights inside. See how walls block light and windows can let light be seen. Lights inside a home are artificial.

Tuesday

Unit Light

Today we will recall what natural light is and open a discussion on artificial light. We will discuss the meaning of artificial (manmade) and we will ask the children what some artificial lights are. Today will learn about the traffic lights. We will discuss the importance of the traffic light, what the colors mean. Who created the first traffic light? How did it look? Does the first traffic light look the same as what we see now? (prepare pictures of both for comparison)

We will read the book Red Light, Green Light by Michael Taylor

Computer Center: Shapes Adventures

The children will be able to identify the shapes and sort them by color. At home you can use any shape computer game available such as https://www.sesamestreet.org/games?id=25871

Math Center: Number of the Week Number of the week 15. The children will write the number 15 on their own and collage 15 objects or draw 15 objects on the number. They will then write the number 15 to the best of their abilities.

Art Center: Traffic Lights:  we create our own traffic light. using black, red, green, yellow construction paper, and glue. The children will cut out their own circles and place them on the black construction. We will ask the meaning of each color. They will write the word traffic light or light to the best of their ability with a teacher visual

.At home you can use a paper and crayons to draw your own traffic light. Have a visual of the word traffic light to write with the best of their abilities.

Block Center: Traffic Lights: Add small traffic lights and traffic signal toys (or make your own) for children to use as they build.

Writing Center: the children will trace the letters in their name.

Unit Light

Today we will remind students what light is, we will focus on natural light. Turning off the light, ask the children how can we see each other? Our sun gives us light so we can see and energy so we can be warm and makes us happy. Explain that light is necessary for people to see, work, and play. Light is necessary for plants to grow.

We will read the book our sun brings life by Conrad J Storad.

Today we will continue to discuss natural light. We will discuss what we see at night. We will talk about the moon and stars and how they provide us natural light. We will read the book “Papa please get the moon for me” by Eric Carle We will discuss what we see in the book. We will then create a all about the moon chart with the children.

Writing Center: Have your child practice writing straight and tracing curved lines.

Block Center

Build a house with windows and put tea lights inside. See how walls block light and windows can let light be seen. Lights inside a home are artificial.

Art Center: - Moon Craft: Using White paper plate, gray paint, and pom-poms. Have the children use the pom-pom to paint the plate creating a moon. Have a visual of the word moon for the children to attempt to write to the best of their abilities.

At home you can use a crayon and paper and draw your moon. Have a visual of the word moon for your child to attempt to write to the best of their abilities.

Math Center:Colors and shapes Bingo. At home use a paper create a bingo card drawing shapes on it. Then create flash cards with the same shapes and colors for the children to match.

Literacy Center: The children will read a book and search for the sight word of the week (he). How many times did you find the word?

Sensory Center:

Traffic Lights: Add red, yellow, and green plastic circles to the pourable materials in the sensory table as well as containers and scoops for scooping and sorting. Talk with the children about traffic lights. Encourage them to consider how traffic lights help keep us safe. Encourage children to think about other lights that are helpful, as well.

Dramatic Play

How to create smores recipe. We will create a camping classic snack with the children using graham crackers, Hershey bars, marshmallows. We will create a step-by-step pictorial and then enjoy our delicious treat inside our play tent with our campfires.

Unit Light

- What are activities can do at night? Today we will discuss camping. What do we need to camp? We will read the book Camping out by: Kyla Steinkraus Illustrated by Helen Poole

We will then create a “camping supply” list with pictures for the children to use in dramatic play center. At home you can create your list with pictures from any magazine or have your child draw what they need and assist them in labeling the items.

Writing Center: Practice writing with chalk at home or in class with chalk boards. Write words you see around your home.

Art Center: Campfire: We will create a campfire and pretend marshmallows; the children will be able to take their campfire during center time to add to the dramatic play. We will write the word campfire or fire with teacher assistance.

Math Center:

Colors and shapes Bingo. At home use a paper create a bingo card drawing shapes on it. Then create flash cards with the same shapes and colors for the children to match.

Science Center:

Making playdough lets create our playdough recipe. We will talk about the measurements and ingredients needed. We will then add yellow food coloring to make yellow playdough and use shapes and letters cookie cutters. They will say what shape or letter they made with the playdough.

Literacy Center: Letter hunt with the letter of the week Letter Oo. On paper or post it write the letter Oo and have your child search your home for the letter. How many letter Oo’s did you find?

Sensory Center:

Encourage students to use their sensory bin to write their first letter of their name. At home you can make a sensory bag using a Ziplock and paint.
