No action shall be taken involving any personal risk or without suitable training. If it is suspected that fumes are still present, the rescuer should wear an appropriate mask or self-contained breathing apparatus. It may be dangerous to the person providing aid to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Wash contaminated clothing thoroughly with water before removing it, or wear gloves.

First Aid: InhalationKeep victim calm. Remove person to fresh air. If person is not breathing, provide artificial respiration. Due to risk of explosion, only use oxygen outside the danger zone. If necessary, provide additional oxygen once breathing is restored if trained to do so.Seek medical attention immediately.

General Fire Hazards

See Section 9 for Flammability Properties. Liquid releases of flammable vapors at well below ambient temperatures readily form a flammable mixture with air.

Stop gas escape/gas inflow if possible. In closed rooms, do not extinguish flames before gas escape has been stopped because otherwise there is a risk that an inflammable mixture will form.Do not extinguish fires at the escape point because this can result in uncontrolled reignition. To reduce the hazards from explosive gas-air mixtures, use water spray or explosion- proof ventilation units to disperse the atmosphere to below the explosion limit.Cool the surroundings with water. Cool endangered containers by sprinkling or spraying with water.

Unusual Fire or Explosion Hazards

Dangerous fire and explosion hazard when exposed to heat, sparks, or flame. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel long distances to a point of ignition or flashback. Container may explode in heat or fire. Runoff to sewer may cause fire or explosion hazard.

FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT:Use of SCBA in enclosed or confined spaces, or as otherwise needed.

5 Fire-fighting measures

Hazardous Combustion Products

Fumes, smoke, carbon monoxide and other decomposition products, in the case of incomplete combustion.

Extinguishing Media

SMALL FIRES:Do not use water jet. Ensure that the source of the fire is secured prior to fighting it.Suitable extinguishing media: Extinguishing powder

Less/Conditionally suitable: Carbon dioxide, water with suitable extinguishing method.

Mobile carbon dioxide and water extinguishers are generally not suitable for extinguishing gas fires.

Unsuitable extinguishing media: Foam, full water jet

Keep personnel removed from and up-wind of fire. Cool adjacent structures and storage drums with water spray. Evacuate area.

Activate facility Spill Contingency Plan (e.g. SPCC, RCRA, OPA, or Emergency Plan). Evacuate non-essential personnel and remove or secure all ignition sources. Consider wind direction; stay upwind and uphill, if possible to evaluate the direction of product travel. Vapor cloud may be white, but color will dissipate as cloud disperses – fire and explosion is still present.

Stop the source of the release, if safe to do so. Do not flush down sewer or drainage system. Do not touch spill liquid (Frostbite or freeze burn hazard). Consider the use of water spray to disperse vapors. Isolate the area until gas has dispersed. Ventilate and gas test area before entering.

Handling Procedures

Comply with all applicable EPA, OSHA, NFPA and consistent state and local requirements. Use appropriate grounding and bonding practices.

Keep away from flame, sparks, and excessive temperatures. Store only in approved containers. Bond and ground containers. Use only in well ventilated areas. See also applicable OSHA regulations for the handling of this product, including, but not limited to, 29 CFR 1910.110 Storage and Handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gases.

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM):This product may contain Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) and customers should be aware of the potential for NORM within their processing system. The actual concentration of NORM in the product is dependent on the geographical source of the natural gas and storage time prior to its delivery. Process equipment (e.g., lines, filters, pumps and reaction units) may accumulate radioactive daughters and emit gamma radiation during operation. Equipment emitting gamma radiation may be presumed to be internally contaminated with alpha-emitting decay products that may be a hazard if inhaled or ingested. Consult applicable NORM regulations for worker protection guidelines and handling requirements before initiating maintenance operations that require opening contaminated equipment.

Requirements for storage areas and containers:Keep away from flame, sparks, excessive temperatures and open flame. Use approved containers. Keep containers closed and clearly labeled. Empty or partially full product containers or vessels may contain explosive vapors. Do not pressurize, cut, heat, weld or expose containers to sources of ignition. Store in a well-ventilated area. See NFPA #58 and API 2510.

STORAGE:

Ample fire water supply should be available. A fixed sprinkler/deluge system is recommended.

Teratogenicity The components of this product are not reported to cause teratogenic effects in humans. Based on best current information, there is no known teratogenicity associated with this product.

Other Comments:High concentrations may reduce the amount of oxygen available for breathing, especially in confined spaces. Hypoxia (inadequate oxygen) during pregnancy may have adverse effects on the developing fetus.

Ecotoxicity: Incomplete ecotoxicological data are available for this product. However, petroleum gases will readily evaporate from the surface and would not be expected to have significant adverse effects in the aquatic environment.

Persistence and Degradability:The hydrocarbons in this material are expected to be inherently biodegradable. In practice, hydrocarbon gases are not likely to remain in solution long enough for biodegradation to be a significant loss process. Hydrogen sulfide, if present in refinery gas streams, will be rapidly oxidized in water and insoluble sulfides precipitated from water when metallic radicals are present.

Bioaccumulative Potential:Since the log Kow values measured for refinery gas constituents are below 3, they are not regarded as having the potential to bioaccumulate.

Mobility in Soil:Due to the extreme volatility of petroleum gases, air is the only environmental compartment in which they will be found. In air, these hydrocarbons undergo photodegradation by reaction with hydroxyl radicals with half-lives ranging from 3.2 days for n-butane to 7 days for propane.

Additional ecological information: No additional information available.
