Discernment Meeting Results November 4, 2018On November 4, 2018, Grace Memorial Episcopal Church members came together to workshop draft goals and guiding principles for the discernment process. Summary results follow. Photos of the flip chart notes follow.
Table 1 Recorder and reporter Phillip Koop
- Move the last guiding principle up to the top. - Consider “respects” tradition…rather than “remembers”. Members chose respects over
“preserve” as they were concerned “preserve” could be construed to imply no change.- Move “welcomes and fosters an inclusive community…” Adding “an inclusive” to mean tolerant
and welcoming of people of all backgrounds- Add “social justice” to “Extends our committement to creativity and the arts”- Call for inclusivity as an actionable idea
Table 2 Recorder and reporter Carol Snead
- Made a point of trying not to rework the goal into a new Grace mission (we have a mission); replaced “God’s” with “its” to refer back to the Grace mission
- Replace “world” with “community” in the goal. [broader focus is in the mission]- Need to clarify “tradition” in the first guiding principal. Does this refer to design?- Is the “Extends our commitment to creativity and the arts” guidng principle redundant with our
“vibrant ministry” in the goal?
Table 3 Reporter – a Gentleman and Elysa de la Cruz
- No changes; found the guiding principles a good filter through which to screen actions, requests; e.g., use of space
Table 4 Reporter – Becky Wong
- Shared their re-write:
Grace Memorial will further God’s mission in the world by building space for vibrant ministries and affordable housing. We will seek to further the prisence of Christ in our City, and we will:
1. Express our love of God and Neighbor.2. Remember tradition and celebrate beauty.3. Promote ecological stewardship.4. Promote equity.5. Honor the dignity of every person.6. Extend our committement to creativity and the Arts.7. Welcome and foster community.
Changes were these:
Grace Memorial will further God’s mission in the world by building space for vibrant ministry space ministries and affordable housing.

Table 5 Reporter Amiel Eifert and recorder Louse Tippins
- Consider “values” tradition and celebrates beauty instead of “remembers tradition…”- Think abou thte future while being informed by the past.- Be open to changes and new ideas.- Willingness to trust each other and god’s guidance.- Assume everyone, every member is doing their best.
Table 6 Reporter Alicia Spears
- Re the draft goal, Grace Memorial will flurther God’s mission in the world by transforming (instead of building) or creating vibrant ministry space and inclusionary (rather than affordable) housing.
- Add a guiding principal around “Sustainable and Stable” (fiscally, morally)…- Other words we like: “shelter” (echoes of nativity story), “providing”- Transformation of the Grace block
