Yameen - 26-01-18 - Whole class session looking at ‘blubber’.

Following on from previous work on a non-fiction notebook explaining that polar bears eat the blubber from the seals and also that penguins have blubber to keep them warm.

We did an experiment where we felt ice in a bag and compared this to feeling some ice wrapped in lard in a bag. The children were encouraged to talk about their observations as the bags were passed round the circle.

Yameen said “It’s very freezing!”

Dara - 26-01-18 - Whole class session looking at ‘blubber’.

Dara said “It’s warm, the blubber. Blubber keeps it warm that’s why it (the ice) is cold. The ice is cold. Why don’t you put it on the heater to make it warm?”

When we discussed where we thought the ice would melt the quickest – on the heater, on the shelf or in our hands Dara said “Are you going to light up the globe so it will melt near it?” implying she knows heat is generated by lights/lamp.

Inaaya - 26-01-18 - Whole class session looking at ‘blubber’.

Inaaya said “This is soft (lard) and this is wet (ice). This is warm (lard) and this is cold (ice).”

When looking at the ice in the bag and seeing the water that was beginning to collect in the bag she said “Maybe it’s melting!”

We looked at the lard and what happened to the water when it goes on the lard and Inaaya said “It looks like soap.”

When asked at the end of the session “What did we learn today?” Inaaya said “Cold is freezing! The ice was cold and the blubber was warm.”
