Tree Planting Collaborations Celebrate Earth Day

Here’s an item for your next round of Door County Nature Trivia: How many trees have the Climate Change Coalition of Door County (CCCDC) and partner organizations planted in the county since 2016? The answer is an astonishing 10,000-plus.

For the fourth year in a row, the CCCDC, the Forest Recovery Project (FRP) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) will join with area high school students to celebrate Earth Day with tree plantings around the county between April 22 and May 4. TNC will supply the trees for the plantings and will also provide two planting sites. Students from Gibraltar and Sturgeon Bay will be at TNC’s Mink River property, and Sevastopol students will plant at Shivering Sands Preserve. Seth Wilson, a science teacher at Sturgeon Bay High School, has offered his acreage as a fourth site, for Southern Door students.

This year’s series of plantings will conclude on May 4 at Mink River beginning at 10 AM. The event is open to the public, and all are welcome. No experience planting trees? Don’t worry. Representatives from TNC, FRP and CCCDC will be on hand to provide some expert advice and assistance.

TNC, FRP and CCCDC began these annual tree plantings in 2016 as one of the most effective ways to help the environment. Trees provide essential habitat, clear pollution from the air, prevent soil erosion, protect groundwater, and reduce energy consumption through windbreaks and shading. They are the lungs of the Earth, breathing in carbon dioxide and breathing out the oxygen on which life depends. It’s this ability to separate and sequester carbon dioxide that makes them such an efficient way to tackle the climate impact of carbon dioxide produced, in large part, by burning fossil fuels.
