2. Topic: Subtraction

Well done on jumping back on your number line yesterday. What happens to a number when you jump back on a number line? Yes, it gets smaller doesn’t it?

Today’s let’s try our crossing- out method in the following subtraction stories.

Task 1:

1. There were 10 cows in a shed. 5 cows went into the field. How many cows were left in the shed?

Step 1: Draw 10 cows Step 2: Cross out 5.Step 3: Count how many cows are left. What happened to the number of cows when we crossed some out?

2. There were 14 birds on a wire. 6 birds flew away. How many birds are left?

Do the 3 steps from above for this story.

Task 2: We can also do subtraction using our tens and units.

This helps a lot for bigger numbers. 17

Page 18:   · Web view2020. 5. 28. · A Word From Teacher. Good morning everyone, ... Thank you so much to the O’Donnell Family for their clever poem for ‘We are Writers’ ... Ireland’s

and 1 bead in the units.

How many beads are left in the tens’ side?

How many units are left?

What number are we left with?

2. Topic: Subtraction

Yesterday we looked at how we can subtract bigger numbers where it would take too long to draw pictures or a number line big enough. We will practise more of these today. Use yesterday’s examples if you get stuck.

Task 1: Cross out the correct amount of beads to find the answers.

Task 2: Now you can draw the beads yourself and then cross out what you need.

I have given some teacher tips to get you started.

Thursday June 4th English

23

45 – 21

We need to draw the beads for 45

So that’s 4 sets of ten and 5 units

Now we need to take away 21.

So cross out two sets of ten on the tens’ side and 1 unit on the unit side.

Topic: Camping

Yesterday you read a little piece about camping. There was a lot of mistakes in the piece wasn’t there?!

Summer is a time when people love to go camping. I love to camp and always have great fun when I go camping. Have you ever gone camping? Did you ever go camping in your own garden? What do you need to bring on a camping trip?

Today we are going to make a really fun craft. I want you to create a camping scene in your garden or the woods. Think of your class story ‘A Forest Adventure’. What kinds of things did the children see in the woods?

Here are some ideas for you. Use your imaginations and GO WILD!!!!!

Find some more ideas on the following page…..

29

I love this idea.

All you need is paper, colours and your glue stick.

Find your tent template on the school website in Ms. Keegan’s tab. I have also included some clipart for you, but you could definitely draw your own.
