The meaning of diakonia is best modeled by the humble actions ofJesus himself in the washing of the disciples’ feet. (John 13)

The words of Jesus also illuminate for us that while we have been called to service, our call is rooted deeply in the One who also called Jesus to serve us,

“Non est servus maior domino suo.”“The servant is not greater than his master.” (John 13: 16)

This reminds us of the need to give humbly of ourselves no matterwhere or what we are called to do, and to find strength in knowing

that the same Spirit present in Jesus’ ministry guides us in ours.

Liturgy of the WordFirst Reading Jeremiah 1: 4-9

The word of the Lord came to me: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. "Ah, Lord GOD!” I said, “I do not know how to speak. I am too young!" But the LORD answered me, do not say, “I am too young.” To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you- oracle of the LORD. Then the LORD extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying to me, “See, I place my words in your mouth!”

Lector: The Word of the Lord.Response: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 117: 1, 2

Praise the LORD, all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples! R. Go out to all the world and tell the Good News. For steadfast is his kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the LORD endures forever. R. Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.

Second Reading II Corinthians 4: 1-2, 5-7Therefore, since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged. Rather, we have denounced shameful, hidden things; not acting deceitfully or falsifying the word of God, but by the open declaration of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselvesas your slaves for the sake of Jesus. For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shown in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of Jesus Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us.

Lector: The word of the Lord.

Holy Gospel Matthew 20: 25b-28Priest: The Lord be with you.Response: And with your spirit.Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.Response: Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus summoned his disciples and said to them: “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Liturgy of the EucharistOffertory

Offertorium: “Sicut in holocausto” … Graduale RomanumSicut in holocausto arietum et taurorum, et sicut in millibus agnorum pinguinum: sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placet tibi: quia non est confusio confi- dentibus in te, Domine.

As a holocaust of rams and bullocks, and of thousands of fatted lambs, so let our sacrifice be in your sight on this day, that it may be pleasing to you. For there is no confusion for those who place their trust in you, O Lord.

(Daniel 3: 40)

Motet: “Panis angelicus” … G. P. da Palestrina (c. 1525-1594) Panis angelicus fit panis hominum, dat panis coelicus figuris terminum: O res mirabilis, manducat Dominum pauper servus et humilis.

The bread of the angels becomes the bread of mortals; the bread of heaven puts an end to prefigurations. O wondrous thing! the poor, the slave and the humble feed on their Lord.

For those unable to receive the Blessed Sacrament at Holy Mass, the ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Sacrament allows you to share in the graces of Christ’s sacrifice.

An Act of Spiritual CommunionO, my Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.Since I cannot receive You sacramentally at this moment,

come at least spiritually into my heart.I embrace You as if You were already there; and I unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from you.Amen.

(St. Alphonus Liguori)
