Singing

Listen to “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9umlwZlPlmg

Could you learn all the words and actions? Maybe you could perform it to someone in your family?

Art

Can you make some bears using toilet roll tubes and paper?

Maybe you could make a few and have your own teddy bear’s picnic at home? You could invite some of your other toys too.

STEM Challenge

One of our favourite STEM challenges was to make a chair that was big enough to support one of our bears from the “Goldilocks” story. Maybe you could try it again at home with one of your toys?

Use some of the paper, cardboard or tubes you have around your home.

Challenge: Could you make a chair outdoors?

Here are some helpful suggestions from the ASL team to help you to encourage your child to become more independent

Some Ideas for Supporting Independence

It’s a good idea to start developing independence skills in preparation for school. It will be a busy environment and developing your child’s confidence around routines will help them to settle in. Here are some ideas to think about.

1. Encourage your child to take off and put on their shoes.

2. Encourage your child to take off and put on their coat.

3. Can they open their lunch box independently and all the items in it? Practice opening and closing food items and drinks bottles etc.

4. There will often be a few identical lunch boxes in the class. Can you add a keyring or similar so that they can recognise their own more easily? This also applies to school bags.

5. Make sure that their name is on their lunch box, water bottle, shoes, clothing and school bag. A lost jumper may cause your child to be upset. It will be found more quickly if it has a name.

6. Encourage your child to take turns during games and activities. Use clear language “my turn”, “your turn”.

7. Practice waiting whenever you can. Just for short times to begin with so they feel success. Then start to make the wait time a little longer as they get better at it. Encourage them with praise “Good waiting Anne, well done”.

8. Praise your child’s efforts and be clear about what you are praising them for e.g. “good listening”.
