Spellings – common exception words

Choose another 5 common exception words from the list provided last week and practise. If your child is still struggling with some of the spellings from last week, include these within your next 5.

Common exception words are just some of the words that children are expected to be able to read and spell by the end of each year. These words are often referred to as tricky words as they do not always follow phonetic rules and therefore can be more challenging.

You could practise by, writing these words in different colours and styles, writing these words in sentences or writing these words in different materials e.g. shaving foam, water on a wall or sand.

3. History/reading – Christopher Columbus

We will be learning the poem below little by little each week. Practise reading the yellow highlighted section with your child. Encourage them to use lots of expression to make the poem sound interesting. You could even help your child remember the poem by adding actions to correspond to the different lines. Recognising the rhyming words will also help your child to memorise the poem and create rhyme and flow when reading.

Poem:IN 1492

In fourteen hundred ninety-twoColumbus sailed the ocean blue.

He had three ships and left from Spain; He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.

He sailed by night; he sailed by day;He used the stars to find his way.

A compass also helped him knowHow to find the way to go.

Ninety sailors were on board; Some men worked while others snored.

Then the workers went to sleep; And others watched the ocean deep.

Day after day they looked for land; They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand.

4. Art – Aboriginal art

Linking to our new learning in geography about Australia, this week we would like you to learn a little about aboriginal artwork. We have attached slides below to provide you with some information and some animal templates for you to have a go at creating some of your own designs.

Use paint and follow the traditional colours and designs. To apply the paint use fingers, sticks or cotton buds.

If you don’t have paint available pencils or felt tips would also work.

Extra-curricula

We know many of you have been busy doing lots of different activities during lockdown. These are all valuable, whether learning through play, developing life skills or deepening knowledge of the world around you. We would love to see pictures or hear about any exciting activities you have been doing at home.

October 12 their dream came true,You never saw a happier crew!

"Indians! Indians!" Columbus cried; His heart was filled with joyful pride.

But "India" the land was not;It was the Bahamas, and it was hot.

The Arakawa natives were very nice; They gave the sailors food and spice.

Columbus sailed on to find some goldTo bring back home, as he'd been told.

He made the trip again and again,Trading gold to bring to Spain.

The first American? No, not quite. But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.
