Foundation Stage Learning Activities Week beginning 1 st June 2020 Daily – as previous weeks 1. 30 mins physical activity such as PE sessions with Joe Wicks (9am) or alternative exercise such as Cosmic Kids yoga, walk, scoot, cycle ride, trampoline? 2. 5-10 minutes per day handwriting practice either letter formation books provided, or practicing writing green or red words; ensure correct pencil grip – writing pencil not pens please. 3. 20 minutes reading (either books or access online such as Reading Eggs or Oxford Owls) Reading Reading Eggs: once your child has done the Placement Test work will be set to their appropriate level when they log in and access the site. (If you need further support with this please contact me directly and I will do my best to help you.) Reading Eggspress: to access the library you need to log in to the Reading Eggspress area of Reading Eggs, your login details are the same. Once logged in click on the library tab then Find a Book (on the front of the ‘librarian’s desk’). Once in you can set the sliding scale to the correct age range, either 5-6 or 5-5 for less confident readers. Books are then displayed on the shelves for you to select, or you can select a genre then choose a book. To encourage your child to practice their developing reading skills and promote independence switch off the ‘Read to me’ function. Oxford Owls: Please see previously posted Recommended Oxford Owls list. They have many books based on the Read Write inc scheme, lots of which show on the front cover the target sounds they are practicing, plus some books from the Songbirds scheme, both of which we use in school. You do need to register to access this but it is FREE to use. Red word check : Please continue working your way through the red words as previously, either reading or spelling if your child is now confident recognising all of the words on the grid by sight. Use the same progression checking process, working along the rows selecting the next five words for this week. Strategies to support reading : Passwords on doors around the house Make a matching pairs memory game Make a game of snap Use your words to make silly sentences Make a bingo matching game Strategies to support spelling : Use magnetic letters to spell out the words

Use the same progression checking process, working along the rows selecting the next five words for this week. Strategies to support reading:

Passwords on doors around the house Make a matching pairs memory game Make a game of snap Use your words to make silly sentences Make a bingo matching game

Strategies to support spelling: Use magnetic letters to spell out the words Write your words in on a blackboard if you have one or chalk outside Practise writing the words as part of daily handwriting Look, cover, write, check Use each word in a sentence (can you draw a picture to go with your sentence?)

See previous (week 5) post for spelling relay document if you wish to use this.

In school we will be assessing where children are with their red words, both in reading and spelling. If you are continuing with Home Learning please use the Red Word Grids (attached, A1) to assess how your child is progressing with the red words they have learned to date, as done previously for the phonics assessments, then photograph and send to me via email. Phonics: Home Learners: if you completed the assessment of sounds taught to date as appropriate for your child this will have given you an idea of those your child is less secure with. Please use this week to go over the sounds they would benefit from revising and consolidating. If you did not complete the assessments at home all instructions and resources were given in the Home Learning documents for wb: 11.05.20, please complete for your child as directed in the email then send me their information, either as a list or photograph completed work and email. This will inform next steps. In school we will be checking over the sounds children may need to revisit and ensuring all assessment data is up to date. Literacy Activities Home Learners may choose to complete a diary entry as previous weeks: in their blue exercise book write about something they have enjoyed doing this weekend or during the week.

You may wish to provide a sentence starter: At the weekend/ On Sunday etc

As previously please encourage children to use A capital letter at the start of each new sentence Finger spaces between words Use their sounds to spell words using their phonic knowledge Full stops at the end of each sentence (just a little dot.) Can they read it back? Does it make sense?

More confident children should be encouraged to write two or three sentences describing their activities. They could use connectives to help sequence their writing (first, next, then, later, in the end) and conjunctions to link clauses (as before). For children who are less confident in their letter formation display the alphabet sheet (in your pack) so they can see it. The red word grid may also be referred to for spelling tricky words. Alphabet check: do children know the upper/ lower case correspondences?

Match upper/ lower case letter cards Complete upper/ lower case matching puzzles Sing the alphabet song Say the capital letters (uppercase) – ask children to write the correct capital

letter Reading: in school we shall be listening to every child read to monitor progress and ensure they are on the correct book band to enable us to plan for next steps.

Maths Activities (20-30 mins daily)Focus: Number: This week we will be consolidating numbers to 20 and reviewing one more and one less than a given number. We will also be making estimates before counting objects. Estimates how many objects they can see and checks by counting them.

ELG: Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one or more or one less than a given number.

Target vocabulary: more/ less, greater than/ smaller than, estimate/ guess Check your child can accurately touch count up to 20 objects (counting cubes, lego

bricks, smarties), present in a pile, if they need support encourage them to line up and touch count, saying one number name for each object.

Take a small handful of objects (counting cubes would be ideal); show briefly by opening your hand (but don’t allow to count), can children estimate how many there might be? Once they have estimated, can they count to check? You could record by making a chart like this:

Estimate Count

Use the estimation powerpoint (A2) to quickly show collections of objects then ask your child to guess how many there were before revealing and counting.

Using number cards: can children place the numbers in correct order? Can children say the number that is one more/ less than a given number (using

number line if support needed) Play a game by rolling a dice or picking a number card then asking your child to tell

you the number that is one more or one less than the given number. Login to Math Seeds – there are three assignments set for children

o Lesson 22: More, less and the sameo Lesson 28: Number lineso Lesson 50: Revision 0-20 (a few children have already completed this but it

will be good to revise) Most children should be able to access these activities independently. Each lesson should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Login to My Maths –There is one new assignment set on Counting. Most children will need an adult to read them the questions. Some children still have previous assignments they may access and complete. Each assignment should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete

Continue to use maths books from packs or those recommended you may have purchased to practice addition and subtraction. The deadline set for all online assignments is Monday 8th June.

Science/ PSHE Activities In school we will be ensuring everyone understands the importance of personal hygiene and social distancing with regards to Covid-19. We will also be giving children the opportunity to discuss any worries they may have. You could share this animation ‘The Stay Home Superheroes’:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNH6ZkpZVb4 If your child is returning to school, we will be following this with the Back to School Superheroes story (A3)Everybody Worries is a picture book available on Oxford Owls.Or you could share the ebook (A4) Coronavirus a book for children.

‘Kill it, catch it, bin it’ (see poster A5) is what we should do it we have a sneeze or cough, discuss this and reinforce that we must wash our hands every time we use a tissue. Share this video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoxdS4eXy18

How do we know our hands are clean after we wash them? Remind children how they need to wash their hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water for20 seconds, this is singing happy birthday to yourself twice. Watch this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ24EfM7sEw Share the poster (A6)

Support children to make a poster of their own to help others remember how to stop germs spreading and wash their hands.

As always, use your home learning pack and the class webpages for other activity ideas. Keep sending me photographs that I can share on the class webpage so your friends can see what you are doing.

Have a good week.Mrs Winter
