Rule: The prefix in– can mean ‘not’ and ‘in’ or ’into’. Before a root word starting with l, in– becomes il– (e.g. legal -> illegal).Before a root word starting with m or p, in– becomes im– (e.g. perfect -> imperfect).Before a root word starting with r, in– becomes ir– (e.g. rational -> irrational).
