3 rd Class English Learning Support 11 th - 15 th May
Hi everyone,
My maternity leave is now finished so I’m back to school but it is a strange one as now St. Colmcilles is totally online. I was looking forward to coming back and seeing all your lovely faces. For now this is our new normal. I miss you all. Baby Róisín is 8 months now and Josh tells me he is a ‘big boy’ at 2 and a half years old!! They are keeping me busy too and our house is full of fun.
Do your best with this work and the work going forward for the rest of this term. Please do not worry or stress about any of it.
The best way to keep your brain working and keep up your English skills is to simply read! You can read anything! Be it a magazine, recipe book or novel or story to your younger siblings. Reading is reading and it’s great for you! You might as well read something you are interested in or enjoy. If all you do is read a little each day, that’s fantastic! Be careful not to spend long playing computer games and try just save that for the weekend or a rainy evening.
Stay safe,
Mrs. Hurson
Comprehension / Vocabulary
Like Ms Donnelly used to do with you at school I am going to go through the tricky words in your comprehension reading that Mr Hayden has assigned for you this week. This week’s comprehension is based on William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar was a real person who was a general in Rome. In this comprehension we read that some men weren’t happy having Caesar as a ruler. An interesting true fact is that Julius was kidnapped by pirates when he was in his mid- 20s while crossing the Aegean Sea. Take your time with it and I think you will enjoy it!
Read over this vocabulary before reading the story in your book. I have explained all the words that are in red and some other words that you might not be familiar with in the story.

SNIP Programme Spelling Exercises
Continue to work away on the SNIP spelling exercises like you have been doing online with Ms.Lynch. I hope you are enjoying them. You could learn these words along with some of the class words that Mr Hayden has assigned for you this week. Why not have a Friday test on the spellings you have learned? Maybe a parent or sibling at home would make up one or two sentences for you to write that include some of your spelling words.
One of the spellings on your sheet this week is the frequently misspelt ‘because’.
Below are some video links to help you with its spelling.
https://youtu.be/_Me872Gq41o – spelling fairy giving tip on how to spell because
https://youtu.be/H6MoT9_xrdw - man singing spelling of because
The word ‘by’ is on your spelling sheet this week. ‘Bye’ and ‘buy’ sound like ‘by’ but have a different spelling and meaning. I hope this poster helps you understand the three different words.
3
The word ‘been’ can be used after have / has / had.

3 rd Class Friday Corrections 15 th May
Well done on all your efforts this week boys and girls!
You can correct your SNIP Session 5 work with the answers on the next three pages.
These words are great to know how to spell as you may use them a lot in your written work. Whatever words you misspelt in your ‘test of mastery’ / Friday Test rewrite them a few times until you feel you can confidently spell the word. It’s a good idea to keep all your spelling work together and next week to check over the words from this week and see can you spell them all.
Enjoy your weekend,
Mrs. Hurson
