Basic Field Hockey Rules 1. You may only use the flat side of your stick 2. You must be properly attired – shin guards, mouth guards, goggles and no jewelry, etc 3. 10 field players plus a goalie play at one time 4. The field hockey game lasts for two 30 minute halves (varsity), 2 – 25 min. halves JV. 5. Substitutions – the field player must exit the field at the 50 in the substitution box, only then can the new player step onto the field. 6. The ball can only go in the air if there is no player in the direct line of the ball and no one is in harm’s way or if lifted safely over. This is judged by the discretion of the ref. Balls may be lifted on goal. 7. Self –start – can be used for any free hit (side in, 16 yd, pass back, 25 yd hit) . When taking a hit, whether it is a free hit, 25 yard hit, you cannot directly hit into the circle, if within the 25 yard line. You must pass it first or carry the ball for 5 yards before hitting the ball into the circle. 8. Any time a foul occurs in either team’s circle, a penalty corner hit will be called. Fouls 1. 7. Danger – broad rule used when a player puts other player(s) in danger with high swing, high ball; if deemed intentional a penalty stroke can be awarded.

8. Penalty Stroke – when defense commits a penalty that prevents a goal or commits intentional foul in circle. The ball is placed on the 7 yard mark and free shot is taken on goal.
