Nick Mattera Named #1 in State Stock Market Game!

With the Ukraine crisis, China’s low manufacturing numbers, weather affecting spring sales and the stock market decline in the week prior to the closing of the game, Moneyworks students, led by instructor Jodene Bromley, had to make tough choices on their strategies to finish out the stock market experience. On April 18, 2014, the Stock Market game finished. Our students competed against individuals and schools from all over Connecticut for the title of Financial Wizard. Our own Griswold High School’s Nick Mattera is the #1 winner in the SIFMA Foundation Stock Market experience. He will be giving a speech in Hartford at the Hartford Courant ceremony on May 22, 2014. This is quite an honor since over 1500 students took part in this authentic experience. The SIFMA foundation created this experience along with teacher’s curriculum and student guidelines. By creating a strategy and researching stocks, mutual funds, futures, and bonds, Nick navigated his way to the top spot in the state. Keep your eyes open -- someday you may see Nick on Wall Street as a stockbroker!

Mrs. Maynard’s classes have been very busy this spring! The fashion and costume class had a successful costume season this year. The 11 girls worked very hard to complete all the costumes for Tarzan. They made 56 ape costumes and 3 loin cloths, and they altered and redesigned the other character costumes. Mrs. Maynard’s freshman WEB also helped by running elastic into the casings of the ape costumes. The bakeshop class is busy preparing treats for teacher appreciation week, during which they will treat the teachers to coffee and a variety of baked goods. The culinary class is planning a menu for the Veterans’ Day brunch on May 30 in collaboration with the history department.

It’s time again for the annual Poetry Slam! The poetry slam celebrates poetry and our language in a creative, challenging and fun atmosphere. Teachers will be judging students on their ability to create and perform original poetry. This year’s slammers are Peyton Cooke, Alex Peterson, Andrew Laro, Billy Mossberg, Dakota Light, Elijah Perry, Erin Hoey, Josh Urban, Katie Hoey, Phil Michel, Ryan Miller and Tiara Lussier. Students look forward to cheering on their favorite spoken word artists!

Boston Field TripOn May 1, ninth- and tenth-grade Honors students in English, History, and Math spent the day touring the great city of Boston. While rain earlier in the week caused the

cancellation of the planned tour of Fenway Park, the remainder of the trip went smoothly as the threatened precipitation held off for the majority of the day. Educational highlights included a climb to the top of the Bunker Hill monument, a tour of the U.S.S. Constitution, and a walk through the New England Holocaust Memorial. Students capped the day off with a stop at Mike’s Pastry for their world-famous cannoli.

Are there any stray library books hanging around your house? Students should be checking their account before the end of the school year to see what books are checked out to them. Books that are not returned by the end of the school year will generate a lost fee that will stay on the students account until paid. Seniors will not be allowed to participate in senior activities until all their fees are paid or books returned.
