PE: Northcote ‘Sports Month’ Fitness Challenge

During this time of the year, we should have been competing in our ‘Sports Day’. Rather than cancelling, we have decided to change our plans this year. Instead of a ‘Sports Day’ we are organising a ‘Sports Month’.

For the next 4 weeks, we will be setting daily fitness challenges for you and your family to complete –  this will help us achieve the recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day!

Each day you need to check the school’s Twitter account to see what the daily fitness challenge is.

https://twitter.com/northcotesch?lang=en

We want to see as many photos of you and your family completing all the fitness challenges as well as images of fitness record cards. (Remember when posting a photo on Twitter do not include your name). If you are able to complete all of the week’s challenges, you will receive a certificate. To be able to receive the certificate, you need to email an image of the fitness record card completed weekly to your class teacher. Good luck and let’s get fit!

Task 2: Reading (P4C focus)

Reading is a great way to help us explore our feelings and the bigger picture. This week, our focus is worry.

Watch/ listen to the story of Silly Billy By Anthony Browne with someone at home using the link below:

Page 3: northcoteschool.com · Web viewA statue is an object made from a hard material, usually stone or metal. They are often of people or animals and are life-size or larger. Following

Now discuss the following questions with somebody at home linked to the main theme in the book:

What did Silly Billy worry about? How does he make himself feel better? What kind of things do you worry about? How does it make you feel? How can you make yourself feel better when you are worrying?

Activity: Make your own worry doll/monster

In the story, Billy's grandma gives him a worry doll to help him release his worries. Now it's your turn to make your own worry doll/monster using the instructions below!

You will need:

a recycled container with a lid one A4 sheet of paper  coloured sticky dots, 2 small circles of white card, googly eyes Pens/coloured pencils

Step 1: Take a small container with a whole in the top ( e.g. a small box, a Pringles tube, etc)

Step 2:Cut a length of paper to cover the sides of the container, making sure you add a 5cm boarder to the top so that you can cut a zig-zag pattern into it to give your monster some spiky hair.

Page 4: northcoteschool.com · Web viewA statue is an object made from a hard material, usually stone or metal. They are often of people or animals and are life-size or larger. Following

Step 3: With the remaining paper, cut out some monster arms and attach to the container using  sellotape or glue.

Step 4: Create your monster using the circles of white card, googly eyes and felt tips/coloured pencils.

Step 5: When you feel worried, write your worry down on a slip of paper and then feed your worry to your monster by posting it through the slot in the container. Watching your worry disappear should help you to feel a bit better! Don't forget to share your worries with a trusted adult too!

Story: Many statues around the world have been questioned for their purpose and value in recent weeks.

Question: Why do we have statues?

A statue is an object made from  a hard material, usually stone or metal.  They are often of people or animals and are life-size or larger. Following protests campaigning for Black Lives Matter, demonstrators in Bristol pulled down a statue of former slave trader, Edward Colson and threw it into the harbour.  It is likely that the statue will now be placed in a museum.  Many other statues have been in question in other parts of the UK with issues regarding what they represent and if they should be given such as prominent position in towns and cities.

Task 1: Read the Picture News article below and then complete the question sheet to share your thoughts.

Picture News at Home - 29th June

Picture News Prompt 2

Task 2: There are lots of statues in Liverpool. Research these on the internet and find out the following:

Who are they? When were they born? Why do they have a statue? Where in Liverpool is the statue located?

Task 3 –   Research a living person that you think deserves a statue.  Use the planning sheet to help you.
