For example ITV's show “Love and Marriage” has been defined as a hybrid drama because it is part documentary, part family drama and part sitcom. (http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2013/jun/04/americans-love-marriage-hybrid-genres)

Narrative. The narrative of the document or a drama means the central story that has been told. For example the TV series “Star Trek" is a series about the crew of the starship enterprise. Each week there are different challenges that the crew of the enterprise must overcome. But the central narrative or story of Star Trek is about what can be achieved by human beings when they worked together.

What is linear? Linear stories or programs follow a path from beginning, to middle and then to the end or resolution. They follow a chronological order.

At the Start

This is when a TV show will start at the opening credits. In a TV programme called House MD they would have shows title on screen. They would also use cutaways and show the viewer who’s in it.

In the middle

Sometimes the viewer might not understand the ad.

Closed ending

Media producers will often end their TV programme or film. They explain everything to the viewer about their story. An example would be Lord of the Rings as Frodo had set out a journal (The fellowship of the ring) to destroy the one ring. The movies explain to the viewer everything such as the characters, war, Dark Lord etc. In the Return of the King Frodo had destroyed the ring and the Dark Lord was destroyed.

A consumer programme is where a company will give their product to a TV show. The TV show will have a host to talk about their product on screen and tell the viewer what the product does. As the viewer is watching it they may decide to phone in and buy their product. It’s also a great way to market their product.

Analytical Approaches.

There are many different approaches being taken to analyse the relationship between TV programme and the audience that watches it. Years ago the main method was to use Nielsen ratings. These ratings relied on relatively small numbers of people volunteering to record their viewing habits and this information was then gathered and put into reports that identified the most popular programmes on TV. Because of the presence of the Internet many programs are now viewed online as well as on TV. People frequently discuss programs online on Facebook or other social media and this allows media companies to analyse their audiences by seeing what people are talking about online. For example Bluefin Labs analyses thousands of hours of TV programming by researching millions of comments and discussions in online forums and on social media. This gives programme makers and much deeper understanding or analysis of the audience that is watching a program. (http://www.twcresearchprogram.com/pdf/TWC_Napoli.pdf)

What is Audience Profiling?

Before a media company brings out their product into the market they must do audience profiling first. The organisation must look at their target audience such as their age, gender, race, income and disposable income. They must also look what media interests they have and their buying habits. The media organisation will use a term called “demographics” This means it will look at the adult population and which employment they are in. They will also break the population into 6 groups. Media producers could use qualitative research this means that they will bring in their target audience (focus groups) and they ask them questions upfront about their TV programme. This is a great way for TV producers to find out what their target audience wants from them.

I have done by research on this website below.

What are Codes and Conventions?

Whenever documentary producers are making a TV show about animals hunting there pray. They would often use footage and a voiceover of them telling the viewer what is happing on the screen. Sometimes they would put images on screen and text as well. They would often put music in the background so that the viewer can listen to. An example of a Documentary producer is David Attenborough.

What is Multi-Strand?

In a movie called Star Wars Empire Strikes Back there is a multi strand plot story. There were two main stories in the movie as a character called Luke was training. The second story is where the movie will go on to other characters and tell their side of the story. These two stories, to keep the audience more interested in the movie.

What is oppositional mean?

This is when two film companies such as Sony and Walt Disney. They would compete against each other and try to get more people to buy their movies. Disney would pick a release date for their movie Star Wars so that so that they can get more money at the box office. This is due because if they had picked a released date that Capitan America Civil War was in cinema, Disney could lose out in profit.

Types of readings

This is when a character is expelling to the viewer about and an event is going to happen and the viewer will agree with them. In a movie called Tommrowland a character was explaining to the viewer what is going to happen in the future of our world such as World War 3, floods, doomsday etc. He also talked about the problem with Governments and the problem with people and how they will deal with it. This speech will get viewers to think and sometimes viewers will disagree with characters.
