Home Learning Grid Week beginning Monday 11th May 2020

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday FridayEnglish LI To use an

illustration to describe a character.

Have a look at the illustration below.

How many adjectives can you think of that you could use to describe Rumpelstiltskin?

Make a list of at least 10 adjectives.

Then, use your adjectives to create noun phrases. Remember that there are lots of different ways to create noun phrases and you can join together more than one using a preposition.

Here are some of mine: A tiny, mysterious man with a cruel glint in his eye.

A magical creature with a heart of stone.

A hunched, bearded man.

How many of your own similar noun phrases can you think of?

LI To create our own magical creature.

Over the next two weeks you are going to plan and write your own fairy tale in the style of Rumpelstiltskin.

First, you need to think of a character, like Rumpelstiltskin, who is going to cause trouble in your story.

What is your character going to look like?

What magical power will they have?

Rumpelstiltskin’s plan was to use his magical powers to trick the miller’s daughter into giving him her child.

What will your character’s plan be?

You may want to draw a picture of your character to help you visualise them.

Fill in the character planner below (I have done an example using Rumpelstiltskin

LI To plan characters in the style of the characters in Rumpelstiltskin.

In Rumpelstiltskin there are four characters: the miller, the king, the miller’s daughter and Rumpelstiltskin.

We have already done some work on Rumpelstiltskin and now we need to think about making up characters in the style of the other characters in the story.

First, think of at least three noun phrases to describe the three human characters in Rumpelstiltskin. Remember to use a range of types of noun phrase as we did on Monday.

You might want to do this on paper dolls. Here are instructions to make a set of 4. Write the character name (Miller, King, Miller’s Daughter) in the head and the noun phrases in the body.

LI To create a plot for our own fairy tale in the style of Rumpelstiltskin.

See below for the main events in the story of Rumpelstiltskin. They are all jumbled up! Can you put them in the right order?

Write the events out in the correct order and then use these events and the work that you have done so far this week to create equivalent events for your own story.

Once you have done this, you should have 13 main events which will make up the plot of your story.

LI To create a setting for our story.

We are told very little about the setting of Rumpelstiltskin, but you did some work on describing settings earlier this term.

Think of a setting for your story.

Will it be in a town? Or a forest? Or a palace?

Think of three or four noun phrases that you could use to describe your setting and then write one or two paragraphs describing the setting.

to give you an idea of how to do it) and then think of five noun phrases, like the ones that you wrote yesterday, to describe the magical character that you have made up.

If you don’t want to make paper dolls, you could make a spider diagram for each character.

Once you have created your noun phrases to describe each of the human characters in Rumpelstiltskin, you need to make up three of your own human characters for your story.

Think about the plan that your mischievous character is plotting.

What types of character would fit with this story?

See below for the three types of character that you need to create.

Then, turn your paper dolls over (or draw three more spider diagrams for your own characters) and create three noun phrases to describe each of your characters.

Before you start, think carefully about the types of characters that appear in fairy tales. Remember that fairy tales take place in the distant past so your character

should be someone who could have lived in those times.

Reading Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard KiplingLI To sequence events in a story.

Watch the video from 5 minutes and 8 seconds to 9 minutes and 6 seconds. Then, re-read the same passage here, from Early in the morning (p2) to he was afraid (p3).

Then, rewrite the events below in the order in which they appear in the text.

LI To draw accurate inferences about characters’ thoughts and feelings from their actions.

Read the passage again, from Early in the morning to he was afraid.

Focus on the following paragraph: He spread out his hood more than ever, and Rikki-tikki saw the spectacle-mark on the back of it that looks exactly like the eye part of a hook-and-eye fastening. He was afraid for the minute, but it is impossible for a mongoose to stay frightened for any length of time, and though Rikki-tikki had never met a live cobra before, his mother had fed him on dead ones, and he knew that all a grown mongoose's business in life was to fight and eat snakes. Nag knew that too and, at the bottom of his cold heart, he was afraid.

Copy the thoughts below.

LI To practise drawing accurate inferences about characters’ thoughts and feelings from their actions.

Focus again on this paragraph: He spread out his hood more than ever, and Rikki-tikki saw the spectacle-mark on the back of it that looks exactly like the eye part of a hook-and-eye fastening.

Write down 4 or 5 thoughts that you think Nag may have had as this was happening.

LI To explore a character’s thoughts and feelings across a series of events.

Read the passage from “Well,” said Rikki-tikki to the head follows his heels close.

Draw a timeline of the main events in this passage (you might want to draw your timeline in the shape of a snake) and label it with both the event and a thought that Rikki-tikki may have been having at that point in the story.

LI To write from the perspective of a character, making inferences about their thoughts and feelings.

Write a letter in role as Rikki-tikki. Imagine that you are writing to his parents about the adventures that he has had so far.

What might he tell them about what has happened to him?

How might he explain what he was thinking and feeling when these things were happening?

Page 4: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...4.docx  · Web viewAfter trying the word problems I have given you, try to write some of your own

Draw a tick next to the ones that you think Rikki-tikki might have been thinking and an cross next to the ones that you think he would not have been thinking.

Which of the thoughts below do you think Rikki-tikki might have been having while all of this was happening?

Maths Day 1 work is below.

For today try to use mental methods for calculating the subtractions. You can make notes and jottings but avoid using the full formal written method. This is to help you improve mental subtraction and how quickly you can do it.

Try these also:56 – 3348 – 24 94 – 32 What stood out about these subtractions that made it easy for you?

74 – 35 68 – 49149 – 56178 – 83189 – 95245 – 67256 – 85390 – 68

Day 2 work is below.

Today use a written method that you are comfortable with. The method we have been working on perfecting is column method, ideally you would use this method.Watch this video to help you.

After completing the work below. Try this: select two numbers at random and subtract them

645 526

1894 3672

837 4873

2432 674

2783 894

573 932

Day 3 work is below.

Think about how you find missing numbers? What knowledge do you have that can help you? are there methods that can help you?

Once you have tried the work provided at the bottom, give this a go:

245 - ?3? = 106453 - ??4 = 189?56 - ??? = 413?2? – 3?9 = 383380 - ??4 = 2??

Subtraction word problems below.

After trying the word problems I have given you, try to write some of your own and test your family.

See below for Problem solving

RE Look at the painting of the Pentecost by Titian.

How does this image show Pentecost?Who is in the painting? How does the Holy sprite visit people?

List and describe the different ways that the Holy Spirit has been portrayed in the bible and the different people that he has visited.

Visit the Wednesday word website and download this week’s WW

Read the Bible passage regarding Pentecost.

Read the passage and think about what stands out to you?

What are the most important parts?

What parts confuse you or has you asking questions?

Create your own piece of art in any form that you like: Painting, collage, drawing, sculpture (clay or recycled materials)That represents the Pentecost.

Science To be able to explain the function of the digestive system.

Time to get a creative! This week you will be making a board game. You can base it off of a game that you are familiar with or you can try to create your own original idea.

Plan the game first before you start making the final version. This way you can test it and ensure that it will work. At this stage you can add to the game and improve it.

A suggestion for how the game could work, you can have players travel around the human body and the digestive system. When players land on certain squares they have to answer a question

Some examples of questions that you can use, adapt or get inspiration from, are below.

Geography LI: To compare different Tropical climates with the climate of Great Britain.

Use Google Earth, an atlas or a map to help you identify the position of the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.Which one is in the Northern Hemisphere and which one is in the Southern Hemisphere?

Page 6: stjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.ukstjamesthegreat.southwark.sch.uk/.../2020/05/...4.docx  · Web viewAfter trying the word problems I have given you, try to write some of your own

Look along the two lines at the continents and countries that are on or around the two tropics.Identify Three countries on the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. What do you notice about the colours of some of the countries from the globe?

Research the countries that you have identified.Look at the temperatures of the countries, the average rainfall and the population of the countries.Look up the same aspects of England. What differences and similarities can you see between the countries you have researched?

PSHE This week we will consider changes!

Your task is to create a leaflet or brochure (you could write a letter if you would prefer) to a Year Three child explaining to them the difficulties and joys of changing from Year Three to Year Four.

Think about the good feelings that the child might experience and the not-so-good feelings. What will they find challengeing and what will they find exciting?

How can you reassure them or make them feel better about the change that they will be making?

Challenge: can you think of what you would say to a child in Year 6, what different challenges are they facing? What worries and fears might they have? What advice would you offer them?
