Historical Periodization

The AP World History course content is structured around the investigation of course themes and key concepts in nine units that correspond to chronological historical periods. The nine units provide a sequential framework for the course.

Unit 0A: Foundations and Development of Civilizations (c. 8,000 B.C.E. – 600 B.C.E.)

Unit 0B: Rise and Spread of Classical Cultures (600B.C.E. – 600 C.E.)

Units 1 & 2: The Global Tapestry and Networks of Exchange (c. 600/1200 C.E. – 1450 C.E.)

Units 3 & 4: Land-Based Empires and Transoceanic Interconnections (1450 – 1750 C.E.)

Units 5 & 6: Revolutions and Consequences of Industrialization (1750 – 1900 C.E.)

Units 7, 8, & 9: Global Conflict, Cold War, Decolonization, and Globalization (1900 – present)

B.C.E. stands for “Before the Common Era” which historically was referred to as B.C. “Before Christ”.

C.E. stands for “Common Era” which was referred to as A.D. “anno Domini - In the year of the Lord”.

In other words, B.C. is now B.C.E., and A.D. is now C.E.; CollegeBoard uses the new abbreviations on the exams.

AP World History Pre-Course Reading Assignment

The Mental Floss History of the World: An Irreverent Romp Through Civilization’s Best Bits

by Eric Sass and Steve Wiegand

Directions:

· Read the book The Mental Floss History of the World: An Irreverent Romp Through Civilization’s Best Bits by Eric Sass and Steve Wiegand.

· Find social, political, interaction, cultural, and economic examples while reading each of the following chapters.

· Fill in the S-P-I-C-E charts, timelines, and maps electronically. Save it to a safe place for uploading it to Turnitin.com. You will receive the Turnitin class ID and password when we return to school.

· In each box, a quote with a lead-in, analysis, and parenthetical citation of the page number must be provided along with the descriptions as evidence of your comprehension of the example and the AP World History Course Themes.

· For a detailed description of the AP World History Course Themes, go to https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-world-history-modern-course-and-exam-description.pdf?course=ap-world-history-modern and review the themes on page 19.

· You will upload this assignment to www.turnitin.com in August. Turnitin.com checks for plagiarism. We know that the program will identify the descriptions of SPICE in the chart as plagiarized. We ignore this, so don’t worry about it. We simply want to be sure that you complete the charts in your own words.

Lead-ins & Documentation:

A lead-in links the quotation to what surrounds it in the context of your paper. All quotations must have a lead-in. At the end of the sentence, provide parenthetical citation with the author’s last name and the page number. Follow carefully the examples below:

· The “blended” lead-in (which cuts some of the quoted material to blend right into a sentence created by the paper writer) State universities are admitting more students through “special remedial programs” (Agee 23).

· The “sentence” lead-in (which uses a sentence directly related to the quote followed by a colon to introduce the quote) English instruction should be examined by educators: “Public school teachers, college professors, and students need to sit down together to evaluate the system” (Agee 23).

· The “somebody said” lead-in (which states the author’s name and adds a verb followed by a comma) Jane M. Agee comments, “Many students who would not have attempted college seven years ago are now coming into state universities” (23).

(Example)

Cultural

· Religion: Egyptians believed that the dead’s heart was weighed by Anubis the god of death who “determine[d] whether they had behaved justly while alive” (Sass & Wiegand, 9). This belief helped to control the behavior of the Egyptian citizens.
