We do get more colds during the winter, but weather is not to blame. During autumn and winter we usually spend more time indoors which helps the cold virus spread from person to person. Fresh air and sunshine are the enemies of germs and disease. Since there is no cure for colds try to prevent them by: *washing hands often * eating well * get plenty of rest and exercise to help build resistance * get out in the fresh air and sunshine as much as weather permits Avoid Getting the Flu! The flu is contagious and can be spread by someone who does not show symptoms yet. The flu virus travels through the air from person to person when someone coughs, sneezes or even talks. The other person inhales the virus and can become sick. Try to prevent the flu by: *checking with your doctor to see if you need to be vaccinated *cough or sneeze into your sleeve *wash hands often *eat well *get plenty of rest Prevention Frequent hand washing is the single most important measure students can take to prevent the spread of bacteria and illness. Washing hands correctly and consistently will reduce the risk or colds and flu as we move into winter. All individuals, including healthy students, carry common bacteria on their skin. With improved hygiene we reduce our risk of infections. While parents can model and encourage regular hand washing at home, we would like to reinforce good habits at school as well. Collectively we will remind children to wash their hands: *Before meals *After using the bathroom *After handling pets *After playing outside Resources www.cdc.gov www.itsasnap.org/snap/statistics.asp Attendance is tremendous, all day, every day! P.E.

The Physical Education classes have all been learning about some exciting games that come from around the world.

You might know about American Volleyball; but have you ever seen Sepak takraw or kick volleyball, a sport native to Southeast Asia? Sepak takraw differs from the similar sport of volleyball in its use of a rattan ball and only allowing players to use their feet, knee, chest and head to touch the ball. It is a popular sport in Southeast Asia. In Malaysia, the game is called sepak raga or takraw. In Thailand it is called takraw. In Myanmar it is known as chin lone, and is considered more of an art as there is often no opposing team, and the point is to keep the ball aloft gracefully and interestingly. In the Philippines, besides "takraw" it is also known as sipa, meaning "kick".

All through history, people have played games to learn or sharpen survival skills, to bring whole communities together, and for simple enjoyment.  Games from around the globe help to introduce children to different cultures while they emphasize coordination, problem solving, critical thinking, and cooperation.  Often these games encourage self-confidence and a sense of pride in ones' family and native culture.  Multicultural games provide an opportunity to integrate math, language arts, social studies, and geography into physical education.  These games have been popular for hundreds of years and will continue to be played around the world.
