How to Ride: Step-by-Step Instructions
How do I catch the bus? There are many bus stops throughout the city. Bus stop
signs have a picture of the front of a bus and blue
lettering on a white background.
When you see this sign, stand at the stop and the bus
operator will stop to pick you up. Sometimes you may
have to wait for fifteen to thirty minutes, you may have
to wait a longer. You will have to learn the exact time the
bus drives past the stop.
How do I board the bus? When the bus arrives and comes to a complete stop, the doors will open. Look at the sign
above the windshield of the bus before you get on the bus to make sure it is the correct bus.
Wait by the front doors of the bus. If there are any passengers who need to get off the bus,
always wait for them to get off the bus before you get on the bus. You should enter into the
front doors and exit from the back doors.
Board the bus by going into the front doors. If you would like a transfer, let the bus operator
know as you are boarding that you would like a transfer. As you are boarding, put your $1 into
the machine on your right. If you asked for a transfer, the bus operator will print out a transfer
ticket. You will use this ticket at the terminal to board your next bus, so do not lose this ticket.
How do I let the bus operator know that I wish to get off? Each bus has a pull cord that runs along the top of the window on each bus. Pull the cord
approximately one block before you wish to exit the bus.
How do I transfer buses? Wait until the bus you are on reaches the terminal. When you reach the terminal, exit the bus
and look for your destination on the front windshield of the buses. When the doors of your bus
opens, board your bus. Insert your transfer ticket, arrow down into the machine.
How do I access the bus if I have a disability? All Hi Tran routes are wheelchair accessible. These buses 'kneel' to lower the bus about 4
inches, making it easier to step into the bus. If you use a wheelchair, scooter or other mobility
aid, or can't step up, the driver can deploy the ramp for you. Riding the bus is easy!
Exact fare is required on all Hi Tran routes for those with disabilities and drivers cannot make
change. If you have a $5, $10, or $20 bill the fare box will issue you a change card that can then
be used for future trips on Hi Tran. If you have a Hi Tran reduced fare identification card for
elderly or disabled persons or a valid Medicare Card please have the card and your fare ready
when boarding. The card needs to be shown to the driver before depositing the fare. Also,
when paying the fare, be sure to ask for a transfer if you need to transfer to another Hi Tran
route for your trip.
How do I use the ramp?Entering the Bus
● Remain at least five feet from the front door to allow other passengers to get on or off.
● Make eye contact with the driver and indicate that you need the ramp.
● Wait for the ramp to be lowered. Move forward onto the ramp, deposit your fare, and
move into the bus. You can ask the driver to help if you use a manual wheelchair and
the ramp is too steep.
● Wait until the driver has raised the flip-up seats to create space for securement of your
wheelchair. Back into the securement area. The driver will secure the straps and the
seat belt. Make sure to lock your brakes or turn off the power on your wheelchair when
instructed to so do by the driver. The driver cannot move the bus until the securement
is completed.
● Please inform the driver of your stop to help him anticipate when you may need
assistance. Major stops and intersections are automatically announced. Other stops are
announced by request only.
Exiting the Bus
● To notify the driver that you wish to get off the bus, press the yellow pushbutton on the
underside of the flip-up seats in the securement area about a block before the stop
where you want off. The bell will ring, a verbal announcement will be made, and an
indicator will light on the dashboard to let the driver know the ramp will need to be
deployed.
● Unlock your brakes or turn the power on your wheelchair on. The driver will unfasten
the securement straps and seatbelt.
● Before moving out of the securement area make sure the aisle is clear, proceed forward,
and exit using the ramp. Be sure to move at least five feet away from the ramp.
● Your trip is complete!
● If both wheelchair spaces are occupied, or if the bus if full to capacity and cannot
accommodate another customer, you will be advised to wait for the next available bus.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the buses run on holidays?Hi Tran does not operate on six holidays of the year. They are:
● New Year's Day● Good Friday, Memorial Day● Independence Day● Labor Day● Thanksgiving Day● Christmas Day
Where can I get a bus schedule?Bus schedules are on the buses, at the terminal located at 200 West Broad Avenue, as well as at many different places throughout High Point.
I have looked at the schedule and realize that the bus I catch does not take me to my destination, but there is another bus that will. Do I have to pay a second fare?
Hi Tran realizes that some trips will require a rider to use two (2) buses. When you board the first bus, you will need to pay the fare and ask the operator for a transfer to the other route you need. Remember to ask for your transfer immediately. Transfers will not be issued at any other time during your trip.
What happens if I miss my transfer? If you miss your transfer because the bus was running late, either the driver will fix your transfer so that you can catch the next available bus, or Hi Tran will make arrangements to get you to your destination.
How do I know what route the bus is traveling? Each bus has a destination sign on the front and right side of the bus that identifies the route the bus travels.
The buses do not start earlier enough or do not end late enough for my needs. What other transportation options are there?Private providers such as Red Bird Cab Company (336) 886-5001 and First Class Cab Company (336) 885-1966 may be able to help you.
Are Hi Tran buses accessible to individuals with disabilities?Yes. All Hi Tran buses are low floor buses equipped with ramps at the front door for entry and exit and stop announcement systems. Turn to Page for more information.
I am disabled and unable to ride the bus. What other transportation options are available to me?Hi Tran offers a complementary paratransit service called Dial-A-Lift for individuals with disabilities that prevent them from riding the regular bus.
I have never ridden the bus before. Is there someone who can help me understand the schedules and the routes?Call Hi Tran at 336-889-7433. Someone will be more than happy to assist you in using the system. Hi Tran staff will even meet with individuals or groups to show you how to use the bus.
I lost an item on the bus. How can I get it back?At the end of each day, bus operators turn in all items left on the bus. You may call 336-889-7433 to see if we have the item.
How can I fill out an application to become a bus operator?Applications for bus operators are taken on the 3 rdFloor of City Hall at the Human Resources Department. Applications are kept in a "CDL Pool" so that as there are vacancies, qualified applicants are selected from this pool for interviews.
