A newsletter inspires and motivates students

and staff alike, for it reminds them of the zeal that they

had once to do something extraordinary. It is great to

find a considerable number of winners and participants

in co-curricular and extracurricular activities which

certainly prove that our staff and students are

adequately equipped and possess necessary quality

skill-sets to bring such laurels to the department. I

wish that this number may grow in the years to come.

I am sure that publishing a newsletter of this sort

containing the achievements will be recognition to

them. This is only a small step towards a long journey.

To achieve progress and to meet objectives we have to

cross numerous milestones. This maiden issue of

newsletter should inspire all of us for a new beginning

enlighten with hope, confidence and faith in each other

in the road ahead.... I wish them all the very best...

gathering. Ms. Renjimol, Assistant Professor introduced the Chief Guest. Dr. Sreenivasan

Ponnuraj, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Karpagam University, Coimbatore was the

Chief Guest and delivered a lecture on “Marine Bioprospecting” in which he emphasized

on conservation of marine organisms and its application in various fields. Dr. P. Senthil

Kumar, Assistant Professor rendered the vote of thanks.

The Department organized a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Meeting on 5th June

2017 (II PG and II UG), 13th July 2017 (III UG), in order to discuss the Academic performance

in University Examinations, Attendance, Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities of the

student. Mrs. G. Rajalakshmi, Head of the Department welcomed the parents. Each parent

was informed with their ward’s performance in University examinations and curricular progress.

Contact numbers of the parents were updated. Parents were encouraged to get in touch with the

class tutors for further information regarding their ward’s performance.

The Department organized a one day workshop on “Terrace Gardening”, Sponsored

June 2017. Mrs. G. Rajalakshmi, Coordinator of the Workshop and Head of the

Department welcomed the gathering. Inaugural Address was delivered by Mrs. Sarasuwathy

Khannaiyann, Managing Trustee, Hindusthan Educational & Charitable Trust; Felicitation

Address was rendered by Dr. Priya SatishPrabhu, Executive Trustee and Secretary,

Hindusthan Educational & Charitable Trust and Presidential Address was delivered by

Dr. K. M. Chinnadorai, Principal, Hindusthan College of Arts and Science. Dr. P. Senthil

Kumar, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology introduced the resource person. Mr. Rajendran,

Coordinator of Pasumaidesam and Nature Conservationist was the resource person and

delivered the techniques involved in setting up terrace garden. In his speech, he emphasized the

importance of organic farming, production of organic manure and green vegetables free from

chemical fertilizers. The prime objective of this workshop is to facilitate the students,

researchers, public, industrialist and entrepreneurs in understanding the importance of setting up

separate unit in the respective field. This program also aimed to develop projects that promote

integrated internship programme and livelihood security on the way to the achievement of

sustainable rural development through promotion of organic farming and to raise the income

level of the women and also serves as guidance to the entrepreneurs on starting up such a new

project and basic technical knowledge for setting up such a facility. As a part of the functions,

kits with grow bags, seedlings and organic manure were distributed to the participants. Vote of

thanks was rendered by Dr. R. S. Saranya, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology and

Organizing Secretary of the Workshop.

To inculcate the research thrust among students, the Department organized “Poster and

Model Presentation” for the Undergraduate and Post graduate students on 21st June 2017 for II

UG, 22nd June 2017 for III UG, 27th June 2017 for II PG, 27th October 2017 for I PG and I UG.

The exhibits represented the various advancements in Science and Technology and its value in

human welfare. Best exhibits were selected and the students were awarded

with certificate and a memento.

The Department organized a one day workshop on “Vemiculture and Vermicompost

Technology”, Sponsored and Supported by Tamilnadu State Council for Science and

Technology, Chennai and Hindusthan Educational and Charitable Trust, Coimbatore in

the college premises on 20th June 2017. Mrs. G. Rajalakshmi, Coordinator of the Workshop

and Head of the Department welcomed the gathering. Inaugural Address was delivered by

Mrs. Sarasuwathy Khannaiyann, Managing Trustee, Hindusthan Educational &

Charitable Trust; Felicitation Address was rendered by Dr. Priya Satishprabhu, Executive

the Department welcomed the gathering. Inaugural Address was delivered by Mrs.

Sarasuwathy Khannaiyann, Managing Trustee, Hindusthan Educational & Charitable

Trust; Felicitation Address was rendered by Dr. Priya Satishprabhu, Executive Trustee and

Secretary, Hindusthan Educational & Charitable Trust and Presidential Address was

delivered by Dr. K. M. Chinnadorai, Principal, Hindusthan College of Arts and Science.

Dr.Mohammed Rafiqkhan, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology introduced the resource

person. Mr. A. Manickam, Farmer, Resource Person of the Workshop emphasized the theme

of the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to explore the students, researchers, public,

industrialist and entrepreneurs with understanding the importance of setting up a cottage or pilot

scale unit of mushroom cultivation with a rough idea on financial parameters. This program also

aimed to develop projects that promote integrated internship programme and livelihood security

on the way to the achievement of sustainable rural development through promotion of organic

farming. The workshop imparts technical and entrepreneurial skills and raises the income level

The Department inaugurated “Biowarriors- Association” on 24th July 2017.

Mrs. G. Rajalakshmi, Head of the Department welcomed the gathering. Presidential Address

was delivered by Dr. K. M. Chinnadorai, Principal, Hindusthan College of Arts and

Science. Mrs. V. Manon Mani, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology stated about the

Biowarriors Association for past years and its success. Dr. P. Senthilkumar, Assistant

Professor of Biotechnology introduced the resource person. Dr. Srinivasan Durairaj,

Associate Professor of Biology, One College Park, Richland Community College, Decatur,

Illinois, USA was the resource person and delivered a special lecture on “Techniques involved in

Stem Cells and its production, applications in medicinal fields”. As a part of the Association

inaugural, departmental Magazine for the year 2016-2017 was released by the chief guest Dr.

Srinivasan Durairaj. The office bearers of the Biowarriors Association were introduced for the

academic year 2017- 2018. The Head of the Association as Mrs. G. Rajalakshmi, Faculty

Incharge of the association as Mrs. V. Manon Mani, Student Chairman as Ms. J. Purnima

Jayshree (II M.Sc.,); Secretary as Mr. K. Magesh Kumar (III B.Sc.,); Joint Secretary as

J. Mohammed Nasrudheen (II B.Sc.,). Vote of thanks was rendered by Ms. S. Komathi,

Assistant Professor of Biotechnology.

The Department of Biotechnology organized the two days Science Academies’ Lecture

Workshop sponsored and supported by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru; Indian

National Science Academy, New Delhi and the National Science Academy, Allahabad in the

college premises on 25th and 26th July 2017. Mrs. G. Rajalakshmi, Coordinator of the

Workshop and Head of the Department delivered the welcome address. Inaugural Address

was delivered by Mrs. Sarasuwathy Khannaiyann, Managing Trustee, Hindusthan

Educational & Charitable Trust; Felicitation Address was rendered by Dr. Priya

Satishprabhu, Executive Trustee and Secretary, Hindusthan Educational & Charitable

Trust and Presidential Address was delivered by Dr. K. M. Chinnadorai, Principal,

Hindusthan College of Arts and Science. Dr. D. J. Bagyaraj, Convener of the Workshop

and INSA Honorary Scientist and Chairman, Centre for Natural Biological Resources and

Community Development emphasized the theme of the workshop. The first day of the

workshop had 4 lectures; Lecture I on “Microbial inoculants for Sustainable Agriculture”

was given by Dr. D. J. Bagyaraj, Convener of the Workshop and INSA Honorary Scientist

and Chairman, Centre for Natural Biological Resources and Community Development,

where he described the importance of various microorganisms and its application over

agriculture. Lecture II on “Floristic diversity in India” was chaired by Dr. R. R. Rao, INSA

Honorary Scientist, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, he explained the

various conservation techniques involved in bioprospection of floristic diversity. Lecture III on

“Conservation of Plant Diversity” was chaired by Prof. K. R. Shivanna, INSA Honorary

Scientist and Honorary Senior Fellow, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and

Environment (ATREE), he described the drawbacks faced by India over Conservation of Plant

Diversity. Lecture IV on “Role of Stem cells in Regenerative Medicine” was delivered by Dr.

P. Ekambaram, Associate Professor, Molecular Toxicology Laboratory, Department of

Biotechnology, Bharathiar University, in which he emphasized the importance of stem cells

and its application in medicine. Ms. S. Komathi, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology rendered

the Vote of Thanks. Dr. P. Senthil Kumar, Dr. Mohammed RafiqKhan, Dr. R.S. Saranya, Mrs.

V. Manonmani, Ms. Renjimol, Ms. Sruthi Radhakrishnan and Mrs. Arthi Kiruba, Assistant

Professors of Biotechnology made the arrangements for the two days workshop.

Coimbatore delivered a lecture on “Plant

Transgenic Technologies”. Dr. A.

Christian College, Chennai delivered a

lecture on “Applications of animal cell

culture in virology”. Dr. R. Sivasamy,

Assistant Professor, Department of

delivered a lecture on “Cell line and

The Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology jointly organized a National

Conference on “Novel Dimensions in Bioscience (NCNTB 2018)” on 3rd February 2018. The

Conference covered key issues and topics related to Medical, Agricultural, Industrial, Marine,

Microbial and Animal Biology; Bioinformatics, Energy and Environment. The Conference was

inaugurated by Mrs. Sarasuwathi Khannaiyann, Managing Trustee, Hindusthan

Educational and Charitable Trust, Felicitated by Dr. Priya Satishprabhu, Executive Trustee

and Secretary, Hindusthan Educational and Charitable Trust and Presided by Dr. K.M.

Chinnadorai, Principal, Hindusthan College of Arts and Science. Dr. Lali Growther, Head

of Microbiology delivered the welcome address and Mrs. G. Rajalakshmi, Head of

Biotechnology delivered the Overview of the conference. Dr. N. Mathivanan, Director and

Head, Centre of Advanced Studies in Botany, Madras University, Chennai rendered the

Inaugural address and delivered a lecture on “Bioprospecting Marine Microbial Biodiversity

of Bay of Bengal”, where he explained the importance of microbes and its importance in

conservation of Marine Ecosystem. Dr. K. S. Subramanian, NABARD Chair Professor,

Department of Nano Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,

Coimbatore delivered lecture on “Nanotechnology for Evergreen Revolution” where he

explained the importance of nanotechnology in crop improvement and in agriculture.

Dr. V. Mahalakshmi, Head of Microbiology, Madras Christian College, Chennai delivered

lecture on “Immunodiagnosis” in which she emphasized the diagnosis techniques involved in

Infectious diseases. Dr. P. Lakshmnaperumalasamy, Former Emeritus Professor,

Department of Environmental Sciences, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore rendered the

valediction address. This Conference aimed to provide a challenging forum and vibrant

opportunity for researchers and industry practitioners to share their original research, practical

development on specific new challenges and emerging issues. The Conference also displayed the

recent breakthroughs and important developments under one umbrella through the unique

scientific discussion from the experts all around the country. Nearly 580 Students, Research

Scholars, Academicians, and Industrialist participated and presented their research findings in

the conference. Vote of thanks was rendered by Dr. N. Hemashenpagam, Assistant Professor

of Microbiology.

to enhance the employability of the students.

CULTURAL CLUB

With view in imparting rich culture

and heritage among interstate, the

Department organized “Onam

Celebration” on 1st September 2017.

Students presented a gracious traditional

dance “Thiruvathara kali”. A “Pookalam”

competition among Undergraduate and

Postgraduate students was a part of the

celebration. At the end of the function,

students were offered with Sadhya- Onam

Feast.

ECOCLUB

The Department inaugurated its Club in the College premises on 20 th September 2017.

The Inaugural address was delivered by Mrs. Sarasuwathy Khannaiyann, Managing Trustee,

Hindusthan Educational and Charitable Trust. Dr. Priya Sathishprabu, Executive Trustee

and Secretary, Hindusthan Educational and Charitable Trust felicitated the programme.

Presidential Address was delivered by Dr. K. M. Chinnadorai, Principal of the college. Ms. S.

Komathi, Assistant Professor and Head Incharge welcomed the gathering. Mr. S. Rajendar,

Head of Pasumai Desam Trust, Coimbatore delivered a talk on “Biodiversity Conservation”.

With view of imparting sustainable development, the ECOCLUB signed a Memorandum of

Understanding with Pasumai Desam Trust for the initiation of Green Coimbatore. The

prime objective of the MOU is to encourage and motivate the students, researchers, public,

industrialist and entrepreneurs in understanding the importance of sustainable development and

green environment. Dr. P. Senthil Kumar, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology rendered the

vote of thanks. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Mohammed RafiqKhan, Assistant

Professor of Biotechnology.

The Department organized a “Research Institute Visit” on 10th August 2017 to

Southern Regional Research Centre, Mannavanur, Kodaikanal, for students of III UG, Dr.

Mohammed RafiqKhan and Ms. Sruthi RadhaKrishnan, Assistant Professors of the

Department accompanied the students. The students were trained with the following aspects,

To undertake basic and applied research on all aspects of sheep and rabbit production.

To develop, update and standardize meat, fibre and pelt technologies.

To transfer improved technologies to farmers, rural artisans and development workers.

To provide referral and consultation services.

The Department organized a one day “Research Institute Visit” for the Postgraduates

and Research Scholars on 6th October 2017 to UPASI-Tea Research Factory, Nirar Dam,

Valparai. The students were taught and trained with various aspects involved in Plant

Propagation and Breeding Methods, Germplasm Conservation, Plant Physiology and Plant

Pathology, Plant Tissue Culture techniques, Biochemical Methods used for Evaluation of Tea

Leaves etc., Eminent Scientist from various departments delivered guest lecture on their

specializations and applications of research field. Students were accompanied with Dr. S.

Komathi and Ms. Sruthi Radhakrishnan, Assistant Professors of Biotechnology.
