Information should be reliable and the author(s) should be credible. If the source is a website, is there an author? How would you investigate

this? How can you determine if the author is knowledgeable and credible?Currency

Outdated information will hurt your research and overall project. How would you find out how recent the information is? What else could

you check for currency?Objectivity

Always consider people’s intentions when you evaluate sources? How would you determine if an author is showing bias? How would you

determine if they are trying to promote a point of view or sell you something? How would you determine if there is a conflict of interest?

Support Examine the information and documentation used to back up the research. How would you determine where the information came from? What would

you look for to determine if the information is supported elsewhere? Who, if anyone, sponsors the site?

What does the URL tell you?

Part C Learning Narrative

Read the research tips below and reflect on how you will use these tips to help you do your work in the ALP Program. Your reflection should be short (1/2 double spaced page). Make sure you write in your own words. If you do quote, paragraph or summarize a source, you must cite it.

Research tip #1 - Choose a variety of mediums for your sources; a mixture of Internet research, professional journals, books, and newspaper articles. Research tip #2 – Use primary research - that is research that is conducted by the person writing the paper. Check to see if the author is an expert in the field of study. What authority do they have to be saying what they are?

Research Tip #3 – Stay organized! Keep all your references in a logical fashion and in one organized folder. Research Tip #4 – Go to the library. The Waterfront Library staff are helpful and knowledgeable! They will be more than happy to assist you in your research. It is their area of expertise.
